I have been accepted to nearby UNECOM, one of my top choices. I still plan to visit KCOM and CCOM for interviews because I feel that I could get such a good education that it would be worth the trip. I am on the fence about WVSOM. Any thoughts? Any out-of-staters one over by their amazing visit to WVSOM?

Thanks!

Unsui,

congrats on UNE they will be my first choice in a year or two when I'm ready to apply. Do you mind telling me your stats and your impression of the campus, the interview, and the program.

Are you a New Englander?

PM if you like.

Thanks,

Ock

Hey Unsui,
I'm currently at UNE and it was my top choice... my first interview was actually at WVSOM. It was all right, but I'd say unless you're really drawn to the PBL, you're really drawn by the geographical location (if UNE is a really far distance from your home, when compared to WVSOM), or you really like being 45 minutes away from EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING (except the regional wal-mart which is like 5 minutes from campus), I'd just stick with UNECOM. If you have the money and time, by all means go, but if things are tight, and you already like UNE, I'd say stick with us... (then again I'm a little biased, congrates on your acceptance btw)... good luck.

Jon

I agree.. UNECOM is great... and I should not say this.. cause you know how many admissions people are lurking on this site.... but it is also in my top 3.

The crappyyy thing is that I have to wait till next weeks to find out the result of my interview. ;(

Oh well I will distract myself with work.

Lewisburg isn't much but I love it here so far 😉 I believe the campus is worth a visit! Call Angie in admissions and setup a visit.

Thanks for the responses! 🙂

Just to clarify: I have an interview scheduled already, but am considering cancelling it. I am most interested in hearing if there are people who were accepted at a much closer, somewhat less expensive school, and still went with WVSOM (or at least were tempted). Richie, which osteopathic schools did you choose WVSOM over?

Thanks!

Oh, and good luck Bill!

Well I ended up choosing WVSOM over VCOM, PCOM, and ECU (an in-state North Carolina M.D. school). Considering ECU is only 3k a year, it was a big jump for me but the issue came down to the philosophies behind each program. The staff at WVSOM are down to earth, the environment is non-competitive and the PBL program flat out owns. I was worried about my decision at first but now I am extremely happy that I chose both Osteopathy and WVSOM in my pursuit of a medical career!

If you are accepted at a school you like, I doubt WV will "wow" you. It's very expensive for out of staters, and I flat out disliked the school. But then again, look at my location and you'll understand what kind of climate I prefer.

That said, everyone is different, and if you have the money to travel there it may be worth it. However, YOU WILL SPEND A LOT OF MONEY BEFORE YOU GET FIN AID AND YOU REALLY DONT HAVE AS MUCH $ AS YOU THINK YOU DO.

Good luck

I love my interiview at WVSOM. I was so pleased with the experience I will be matriculating there next year. If big city life isnt for you, give WVSOM a look.

Greenbrier County, WV has the famed Greenbrier Resort, at which George W. Bush resided on more than one occasion. Regardless of what you think of him - hey, he's the President, so that says something for the locality.

And now, the federal prison in Alderson, also in Greenbrier County, will be home to Martha Stewart, by her own choice.

If Greenbrier County is good enough for the President and Martha Stewart, it's got to be good enough for you!

federal prison in Alderson, also in Greenbrier County

Yipes! I didn't know this hehe 😉

PBL is "problem Based Learning" which is basically student directed group learning based around patient cases.

See you next year BooneDoc 😉

BooneDoc,
Did you see other schools in rural settings? Which ones? Was geographic location a factor for you?

Geographic was somewhat a factor. I live between WVSOM and VCOM, and not too far from PCSOM. I wanted to attend a school in Appalachia with a focus on rural medicine. WVSOM was my first choice because it is established. Not to put down the the other two schools, but I did not want to go to a school that is less than a decade old. I'm sure they will be great over time. WVSOM is ranked 8th in the nation in rural medicine per US News and Report. Ultimately, decide what you want out of a school and find which ones are the best match for you.

Hey, I'm a first-year out-of-state student here at WVSOM. I just wanted to throw out there the fact that I love it here. To understand why you really need to interview. I was determined not to go here...wanted to go out west, too expensive, too small, too rural...but after my interview I had fallen in love with the school. The PBL program was a huge draw, but I would have come here even if I had not been accepted into PBL. Everyone here is uber-helpful. Just wait until your interview, I guarantee that at least one total stranger will wish you luck and stop to answer your questions, no matter how goofy they might sound ;-) I have had professors stop by during weekend study sessions to see if I needed any help...and they came bearing cookies no less! At any rate, the school is fantastic, the area is gorgeous, the people are friendly, and the culture shock goes away eventually...as I type this I am looking out my window at the cows in my neighbors yard...Good luck with your interviews!

hey, im an out of state MS1 that is very, very from the city. the fact of the matter is that there isn't exactly that much free time, and when there is, i've found myself pretty content. of course there are issues that come up at any med school- dealing with a small group of people for extended amounts of time usually leads to a little bit of friction- but as for the school, i really enjoy it. its tougher financially, and in the end it matters very little where you go to school. what's important is where you train, and making sure you do well enough in school to get the residency you want, no matter what school you attend. my 2 cents... pm if questions
