Another outstanding program on the rise.

The new chairman has gotten an enormous financial commitment from the University. He is very well known and certainly cares a LOT about making Yale as good as the namesake. Also one of the most approachable chairs in the country. Will sit down with residents/med students to have lunch.

Very non-malignant program. While the surgical numbers are "average" according to the program on interview day, the experience seems to be above average to very good. I think this program will continue to get better every year...with a lot of that due to the new chairman. He has already made MANY new hires and the new eye building looks to be quite impressive.

I was wondering if anyone who is either currently a resident at Yale or who has recently interviewed can provide some additional information on the program. (autonomy, call schedule, atmosphere, quality of training, facilities, pros & cons, etc).

Thanks.

it's because he came from Doheny 😉

I interviewed at Yale in 2006.

Pros: Great faculty who really seemed to value education. Large VA with lots of experience. Residents seemed extremely happy. Get to go to carribean I think to do pad the surgical stats and relax. Top notch research.

Cons: I remember them being kind of weak on the retina side. Not sure if things have changed. New Haven isn't the greatest place.

I would rate this program a 6/10

Does anyone remember the surgical numbers at Yale ie. primary phaco's? I vaguely remember it being around 150... is this correct? Thanks.

Very impressed with this program. Dr. Tsai is very impressive and ambitious. This program is already great with all the recent changes, and I think the ophtho world will recognize this soon and Yale will be considered a true top program. Anyways, good clinical volume, good subspecialty exposure, nice facilities, decently happy residents, great fellowships. New Haven isn't great but it's not terrible, and NYC/Boston aren't too far. There are a lot of young and energetic faculty.
