Yale Waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't have any more news but i just couldn't stand seeing this on page four.
Brock, I'm pulling for you! Hopefully one of your awesome waitlists will turn into an acceptance. What is it that they all say, all it takes is one, right? A more appropriate smiley for your situation, for right now. But you wait till late August when we're both at Yale, then

what happened to this email we're supposed to get... last year it was sent may 20th, a sunday...

what's the deal yale??? grrr. 👎

I'm almost hesitant to report back because very little of what I've been told has actually been correct... but... supposedly the email, with what tier we're in, is coming today. This is what Veronica told me earlier this week, and she seems genuine and reliable. (Sorry, I know none of us needs even more incentive to check email... I hope this is right!)

well i was just told that they are currently in a meeting... and are backlogged due to commencement, which is monday so we may not hear back until tuesday or wednesday. that's my update

WHAT. ooph, okay. at least we know not have rigid expectations of them now. they seem to know about as much about this process as we do!

I called yesterday in case there was new news, but Veronica told me the same thing - that we should be getting an email at the end of this week (aka today). She then went on a tangent to say that the end of the week is technically Saturday, since a new week begins on Sunday... so maybe we will be getting a weekend email?? Who knows. In the meantime, I think the best thing to do is meditate and try not to let all the anxiety/uncertainty get to you!

Just checking in...did anyone get an email this weekend?

Nope, this is getting quite depressing. 🙁

while vacationing this weekend i kept dreaming that i was the next person to get off the waitlist only to discover they weren't accepting any more people. lol once i finally got home to my internet connection, the status quo reminded me of that feeling in my dream. thought i'd share/vent...

everyone else, good weekends i hope?

According to MDapps a couple more people were let in off the waitlist. The rough averages of the people let in thus far are 39S on the MCAT and a 3.8 GPA. More people are being taken off the waitlist and the waitlist email has yet to be sent. 🙁

🙁

My impression is that MCATs and GPAs matter much less now. We could have easily been rejected -- most people were -- so the fact that we're still in this suggests to me that they're okay with our stats. Of course, if people holding acceptances have lower numbers, then they'll be trying to compensate with the wait list folks with higher MCATs and GPAs, but it's just impossible to know that. I think it's more about matching qualifications at this point. I know of someone who got in yesterday, so the list is still moving. Maybe we'll even get that mythical waitlist tier email today.

depressing... i'm trying to stay optimistic, but really, i'm losing hope here...

Latest news: we should get an email "within the next several days." Bah. They've been saying that for weeks now!

yesterday i got "in the next several days" as well. i need to stop calling every day, they might start recognizing my voice lol

Sigh, yet another two people let in off the waitlist according to MDapps and still no waitlist email from Yale. That makes six people on MDapps alone plus another 3 or so that I've heard of for roughly 9 people on SDN/MDapps. Most of them are going to Yale. 🙁

Is there an easy way to search MDapps for people who got off the WL?

I don't believe so. I hate to admit this but the reason I know how many have been taken off the waitlist is because I've been following it so closely. The best way to check is just to click on every app and see which have been accepted off the waitlist as opposed to having been accepted outright.

Haha, it's ok, I stalked all the Penn accepted mdapps after getting WL, apparently just because I wanted to torture myself and feel inferior, lol, it worked out for the best though, and I hope it works out for you too 🙂

well for what its worth, i was told yest that the class is not necessarily full and people keep going in and out, so it's too early to lose hope. but again, this did not come from the director or the dean's mouth directly so take it with a grain of salt

got off the yale waitlist recently but am not going - hope that helps cause there should still be movement

Hey all, long time lurker first time poster (i post on CC under the same name, so if this seems sketchy you can check that out). I got in off the waitlist the other day and know another person who got in last week, so the list is at least moving. A good friend of mine who got in on the regular date was recently offered a full ride to another school and is planning on taking it, so another spot should be opening up in the next day or so.

congrats! and thanks for the update! i hope this bodes well for the rest of us

I got off the waitlist today so it's still moving! I'm taking a few days to decide because I was very set on another school but there's a good chance I will not be accepting my spot. If I don't, hope it goes to one of you!

to all of you getting in, did u get a phone call or a letter in the mail?

I had just received the ranking email. Waitlistees are ranked in groups 1-3, with these descriptions:

Group 1 is (roughly) the top third of the waiting list. There is no guarantee, but based on outcomes in recent years, there is a reasonably good probability of acceptance for applicants in this group.

Group 2 is slightly larger than Group 1. In an "average" year (statistically average), Group 2 applicants have a realistic possibility of acceptance. Again, acceptance is not guaranteed, but applicants in this group should expect to know more about their status by the second week of June.

Group 3 is the least predictable group. About half of the time we reach Group 3, and about half of the time we don't, and in some years we actually progress nicely into the group. In short, Group 3 outcomes vary considerably from year to year, but the situation is not completely unrealistic for applicants in this group, and whatever happens, we should know where we stand by the third week of June.

I'm in group 1, so I'm keeping my hopes up!

Okay, so just got the tier email from Yale. Says I'm in group 1, and then says separate emails have been sent to each group. Then I noticed they forgot to hide the emails of the others they copied the email to. Then I counted the number of emails - 67! Unless there is a smart email trick I don't know about where you can send out a bulk mailing with differing content within the group, it looks like the top third of the waitlist is 67 people - ha...

Heh, I guess realistically we can expect at most around 30-35 to come off the group 1 wait list. So around a 50% or lower chance?

I guess not too bad.

Sneaky admissions office...

67 people in group 1! That's 2/3 the size of the entire class. I'm in group 2, so despite the "realistic possibility" during an average year, it's sounds like it's actually extremely, extremely unlikely. Bummer.

Good luck to you Group 1 folks.

So what were peoples impressions after speaking with Mr. Silverman today. I thought the phone call was pretty useful, he said it looks like this year is falling into the description of a typical year, and that the Grouping process is fluid and changing all the time. Finally, he said a good number of students dropped their WL after receiving the email, even students that were placed in Group 1.

What do the rest of you think?

I know I'm not the only one who called. Any other input? :luck:

Thanks for that, NuRhoPsi! When I called on Wednesday, he told me that it was still too early to tell whether or not it would be a typical year, and that he would have a clearer idea in about 10 days. He said that when they go to the wait list, they try to find a student who will best contribute to the makeup of the class--so, the groups are meaningful, but they may not be followed exactly (i.e. someone from group 2 could get an offer before someone in group 1.)

This is more informative than what Mr. Silverman told me when I called on Wednesday. Hopefully we will have a better idea of how the list is moving by the end of this week...

i got informative news from mr. silverman today: the waitlist likely won't move again until close to the end of the month. they're not done, but waiting to see who will defer. he knows of a number of people who will definitely be deferring, which is good news, and he implied that the class isn't yet full without even considering deferrals. he expects the class to be pretty much set by july 4.

this is good news, i think! fingers crossed...... :luck:

Thanks for the update!

I called and spoke with Mr. Silverman today just to see if anything had changed since last week when Indigo called. He said that the students planning to defer or contemplating deferring are waiting longer than expected, and the deadline is June 30th. That being said he still believes it will be an average year in terms of the spots that are made available by the deferrals. However I do not know how many students defer in an average year, but I hope its enough for a few of us. :luck: Overall if we are fortunate enough to hear anything it is unlikely that it will occur before very late June or early July.

From what you're saying, Nu, it sounds like most of the remaining (few) potential spots would come from deferrals from students. If that's the case, it seems like the chance of getting in at this point is very low regardless of Group position.

It think that this late in the game, any movement that happens at any school is only going to effect a small number of applicants. Its over a month past the May 15th deadline, so its evident that the majority of schools are already full and the only spots that will open will come from a handful of students that are either fortunate enough to trade up and give us a spot (unlikely at Yale since it is such a great place) or students deferring.
