Yea or Nay - Post-Interview Thank You Email

Hey all, I recently interviewed with a school and was wondering if it was recommended or frowned upon to send a thank you email to the faculty members that interviewed me.

Email I was thinking about is short and sweet and goes something along the lines of:

"I want to thank you once again for taking the time to meet with me and discuss the DDS/DMD program. I was extremely impressed with the program and I am looking forward to hearing back from the college."

Please let me know if this would be a good thing to send, or if it would hurt my candidacy.

To me it seems like a very transparent attempt at flattery, but I don't think it makes a difference one way or another.

It won't change anything about their decision, so really you could spend those five minutes it would have taken elsewhere. Like commenting on an SDN thread.

haha, I was thinking about this after my interviews. THEY MATTER 0% at respectable schools...
But, if you want to do it, do it in a nice and respectable way and not in a way of trying to sway their decision.
Seriously, LECOM makes you do it and it's so stupid. It carries no weight except at a school like LECOM -.-

One school gave me a list of my interviewers with their emails, so I plan on sending one to them. Otherwise I do not think I'll be sending any.

Just take the 10 minutes to write it. No applicant actually knows the true effect it has, you never know what will happen.

0 benfits or not. This school took the time to interview you where other schools didn't even bother to send you anything!

You also paid them for the privilege, and they're hoping you will be paying them substantially more to attend, they're not exactly doing it as a favor.

This is it. It's called doing business-they want you and your money as much you want them. You don't owe them any more gratitude than you owe the CEO of Walmart. That being said, being nice isn't a bad thing.

So far I have and I probably will continue to. I got the impression that it wouldn't matter at all, but the school I interviewed at provided the interviewers emails if we wanted them, so it seemed like they knew a lot of us would email. It doesn't feel like empty flattery at all, but also my mom would kill me if I didn't send a thank you note to someone and mother knows best ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I would do it. Even if it doesn't affect the outcome of their decision at all, it definitely won't hurt. It will show the people who interviewed you that you are respectful and appreciative for the opportunity.

I receive thank you's after interviews for my program. ( I am a post grad PD). I generally throw them away without reading them. My mind was made up at the interview. A note will not change it. Email or handwritten did not make a difference.

How many dentists are you interviewing for your program? Seems kinda harsh to throw em away without a glance.

Some doctors would reply and say they appreciated the thank you note. Others don't care or wouldn't reply. Generally it is a polite and courteous thing to do so I'd recommend writing one.

After one of my interviews this week, my interviewer wrote down her email for me and asked me to “please reach out with any questions.” I was thinking that since she gave me her email the courteous thing to do was to send a quick thank you email, but now I don’t know...Any thoughts on this?

I would do it. You have nothing to lose, everything to gain. Even if it doesn't help you, it's just a courteous move to make 🙂
