Hi Guys,
I was just wondering what kind of jobs you had for your year(s) off if you decided to take them? I just graduated and am retaking the DAT and am wondering whether or not it is vital the job be dental related. I have lots of shadowing experience (1.5 years). Thanks!

If you want to make your first two years of dental school easier, go work for a lab.

I always wanted to be one of those guys at the spring break destinations who rented out the jet skis, floatable things, gave parasailing rides......that sort of thing.

That or a cowboy. Tough choice.

I would definately go south and have some fun.

amen! working at a dental lab even for 6 months will give you so much knowledge about restorative dentistry and will give you tremendous confidence in pre-clinicals and clinicals..i wish I could have done it!

My preprofessional advisor who is almost genius gave me very sound advice. She said to do something meaningful that would look good for at least 6 months (until interviews are over) then if you want to backpack through Europe or do nothing somewhere that's fine, but you can't lie in your interview and saying you aren't doing anything won't look too great. I am taking a year off and working in a lab--not glamourous work, but more research experience cannot hurt.

Next year I'll be in the same situation as the original poster once I finish my pre-reqs and would like to have a plan lined up for how to best spend my lag year.

Excuse my complete ignorance on this "lab" idea, but what kind of lab are you referring to exactly? And how can I go about finding one?

It's sounds like a great way to gain experience. What kind of position would I qualify for as a pre-dental student?

Thanks! 😉
