SDNers,

I need your expertise and opinion. As with many of these other threads, I need your help! I'm getting desperate. I've been accepted to both, but I'm now unsure about which to go to. I'm leaning towards MUCOM because of the curriculum (I saw that VCOM has quite a bit of SDL in physiology), but what do you guys think?

Tuition is pretty comparable and the COA isn't too different from each other. If you had to choose, which would you pick and why?

I was accepted to both MUCOM and VCOM-CC this year as well and I am choosing VCOM over MUCOM, I actually chose other schools over MUCOM as well with VCOM-CC as my number one choice. I have some friends that go to MUCOM and they seem to really like it but since it's a brand new school they are going through some growing pains as do all new medical schools. Everything about MUCOM I though was great but I'd rather go to a more established school that's already gone through the growing pains, plus I've lived in Indiana for 20+ years and ready to get out because the weather sucks compared to South Carolina. MUCOM is in the crappy part of Indy, so you wouldn't want to live very close to the school. They're curriculums are very similar but to me what made me turn down MUCOM for VCOM was location, VCOM is more established (although MUCOM does have some pretty solid rotation sites across the state), and opportunities to do more unique things. You can't make a bad decision here so I'd say pick the school that you feel suits you the best which is why I turned down MUCOM for VCOM-CC. A huge factor for me in choosing medical schools is location, location, location, but that's just me because I'm sick of the cold and want the warm weather.

Which one were you happiest at?
Do you like cold or mild climate?
Primary care focus?
Research desire?

Family better off where?

MUCOM is a nice school but I think VCOM cc is older and mission based.

Why do you guys keep saying vcom-cc is more established? Vcom-cc is still new and they haven't graduated a class. Vcom-va and vcom-cc are not the same school. Just like pcom-pa and pcom-ga are not the same at all.

It's a little bit older I think.

In the very end, it was the 'gut' feeling that (mostly) decided the school for me.

I feel like Marian has more going for it right now. Tons of excitement surrounding it, strong support from the state of Indiana and a huge thumb-up from Goro, to boot.

VCOM is expanding into 3 campuses, apparently, with the third 160+ student campus opening next fall. They're turning into a LECOM/Touro. I don't know if I would want my degree from there if I had another choice.

LECOM at least has an enormous OPTI and its schools aren't in commercial districts.

yup, MUCOM does have a lot going for it, been there, seen it, and was even accepted there, but lets face the fact that MUCOM doesn't offer anything "extra" than VCOM-CC. actually, i'd go on to say that VCOM-CC offers its students a ton of opportunities to do unique things such as international medical mission work whereas MUCOM doesn't have anything like that comparable to VCOM (probably will in the future though). and to say that you wouldn't want a degree from VCOM because it is going to expand to a third campus is like saying you don't want a degree from Indiana University School of Medicine because they actually have 8 to 9 different campuses and each one fairly different from one another, but i've never seen anyone hate on IU because they have 8-9 campuses or question their legitimacy.

my vote still goes for VCOM-CC but again there is no right or wrong choice, it's a gut decision more than anything

I've met the people starting MUCOM and they know what they're doing. Good ties to the local community, with IU and with the state's Catholic Hospital system. The brand new combined med school/nursing school building looks super sharp. They'll be concentrating on getting the school running at first, so research will have a back seat. But you can always waltz over to IUSM and find something to do. Maybe even something at IUPUI-Indy, Roche or Eli Lilly.

Just to let you know you can do medical missions at any school and you can literally go anywhere in world for your electives at most schools.

just going to bring this thread back for a bit... but does anyone have any opinions on MUCOM vs VCOM-VC?
Love both schools after interviewing, but I am torn between the pros/cons of each. If anyone has their own perspective on either or both schools - it would be great to hear some new perspectives 🙂

The IU argument doesn't really apply in the same way as it does with the VCOMs.. All the campuses are in the same state and the students have the option to come back to Indianapolis for their 3rd and 4th year. Certain campuses (Bloomington, and maybe Fort Wayne?) have the option to stay there for 3rd and 4th year but for the most part students are just sent to satellite campuses for basic sciences.

I'm probably biased, but if I were making this decision I would likely choose MUCOM because of the huge amount of support the school gets from the state and the physicians in the area. St. Vincent, St Francis and Community Health Network are all incredible systems with a huge array of pathology. I'm not very familiar with the VCOM-CC rotation situation.

Agreed. The comparison of IU's satellite campuses (of which I'm sure are very well supported) to VCOM's huge class size, borderline money-printing branch campuses is laughable.
