With the plethora of these silly threads popping up, here is a generalized chance thread that tells you your chances of landing an interview. We have no idea how you interview: if you're overbearing, socially awkward, etc. Numbers only tell you your chances of getting an interview, assuming everything else is fine. So, unless you're showing us your entire application, no one can play Admissions Committee...your thread is essentially useless. We have no idea what they're looking for in a candidate outside of numbers. We've seen SDN's absolute worst get in, we've seen SDN's best get rejected, so these "chance me threads" are no more than a waste of everyone's time.

If you're just going to post generalized numbers then here's a GREAT generalized guide to your chances. With that said, here you go. Now stop posting these things in the main forum, please.

GPA
1) 3.5-4.0: Good chances. Congratulations, you don't have to take post-bacc classes.
2) 3.2-3.4: Medium chances. You're average.
3) 3.0-3.19: Iffy chances solely based on GPA. Start aiming for minimum 20s across the board on your DAT
4) >2.99: Consider a master's or a post-bacc program.

DAT

1) Minimum 20s across the board + scores above 22: Great chances, and you're annoying everyone.
2) Minimum 20s + one score 17-19: You're fine.
3) Minimum 20s + one score 16 or below (in a section other than QR): Re-take it.
4) 19s across the board: Chances are fine.
5) Mixes of 18s and 19s: Eh, you could do better.

LORs
1) "I wrote my own LORs and my professor signed off on it" - great chances, and you win the unethical award of the year
2) "Great LORs" - don't bank on it. You didn't read it.

Extra Curriculars:
1) Did you build an orphanage in Africa? Might be able to compensate for a sub 3.0.
2) Do you have your own charity, NGO, or NPO? Might make up for a 17 PAT
3) 1500hrs of community service: great, apply to ASDOH.

TA DA! There you go.

I have a 5.6 GPA, 37 DAT on all the sections, and am the president of the world...should I be scared??? 🙁

In all honesty, I've also contemplated on asking this many times but I know the responses don't mean anything since no one here is on the admissions committee. People just post it to feel better. Lurking around SDN might actually be worse for some applicants.

Pretty useless post

But you people keep answering the "chance me threads.." You have the choice to boycott and ignore them.. it's called a search function. use it!

not really going to stop people from posting these. You don't want to read them, don't click on the thread.

Meh, they're free to make the threads and folks are free to hate on them as well I suppose. Not sure why it's so annoying. It's application season and thousands of folks are just looking for guidance or comfort from people sharing their experience.

It's sort of...a basic human emotion.

Are you the owner of SDN? Prob not, so simply ignore these threats if they annoy you so much. People post here to try to get some advice and peace of mind. Of course, there are always trolls but what can you do about it.

AGREED.
To the OP: I think we are not completely unable to help. People that have got into dental school usually frequent these forums. If someone that got in had similar stats to a person posting about their chances, IMO it'd be super helpful for the worried applicant to see what this person did to get in. Sure, we are not the admissions committee, but we can at least point them in the right direction. I know for me, having someone directly tell me what I needed to do or what I needed to improve on helped me immensely.

Let's be patient and helpful, ya?

Pretty useless post

I find it quite a good starting point to be honest. Far from useless

Personally, I think all the "chance me" threads detract from the forum... Some are good, but there are too many IMO. People come here looking for information but when the forums are washed with chance me threads with the same info in each, there is massive redundancy here. Honestly, If we could refine the threads a little bit, it would make the forums more valuable as a resource for those looking for good information. Just my opinion though 🙂

I agree that these forums are overcrowded with chance me threads. New applicants should be required to read this post. :sendoff:

As some others have already stated, these guidelines are actually pretty accurate.

not really going to stop people from posting these. You don't want to read them, don't click on the thread.

The point of this post is to imply that people shouldn't be posting "chance me" threads. Everyone that writes a post like that (deep down) knows what is going to be said about it.

*You're right, I shouldn't point people out*

They allllllllllll know their chances. So, there is no point in asking.

I hope you realize that I was asking for help with my SCHOOL LIST. Not my chances of getting into X, Y, Z. I was looking for comments like aznboi89x's that points out Colorado's WICHE status or UConn's seat numbers that I obviously overlooked. And in case you're going to say something about me posting my stats, honestly, who do you think would reply my thread without asking me what my stats are. Sorry if I wasted precious space on SDN.

I would not worry about your thread - its not the run of the mill "what are my chances?" thread. Its a legit thread 🙂

Amen.

Hope people's lack of compassion comes through in interviews before they are given the job of essentially being a compassionate understanding care giver.

I think what is being said and what is being heard are different things here. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking for advice, should you not be able to find it. There is absolutely nothing wrong asking a unique question, or even trying to help people out. There are many on these forums who spend an awful lot of time trying to help out!

The problem arises when the same posts pop up again and again, or when those with obviously solid stats keep asking if they are good enough to get in. This floods out the posts who have legitimate questions, or makes those looking to help out not want to wade through the mess. This also makes it even more difficult for those trying to answer their own questions by using the search feature! These forums are a great tool, but those who post the types of chance me threads I noted earlier, are detracting from the threads that are more valuable to those incoming predents. Last note: Chance me threads are not inherently bad - they are only bad when they have obvious answers lol.

This clear things up? 🙂

Yeah this is unnecessary to point specific people out. 👎

Aside from that comment, I think people are taking this thread too seriously-- I just thought it served as some comical relief throughout some of the chaos that comes with a new cycle opening. I didn't think this would actually deter people from still posting chance me threads because who cares if someone thinks you're being annoying? Everyone's allowed to post... if it bothers you so much than just don't open and read it. 👍

Mods, would you be willing to create a subsection for 'What Are My Chances?' as there is in the pre-medical forum? It's tiring to sift through these redundant threads when looking for other posts with actual, general content.

This is a good idea - I would support it 👍

Yes it is! And its at the top of the forum, but that has not diminished the number of chances threads

People on this forum are also more likely to respond to chances threads than that sticky. The last post in that thread is from Feb 2013 asking about chances and no one responded to it.

That sticky thread is dated and far too long. I'm suggesting a sub-forum, similar to 'School Specific Discussions'. It appears beneath 'Pre-Dental Forums' and would be similar to the Pre-Medical Forum layout. I'm not sure who to contact, but for those of you who know the right person, feel free to pass the suggestion on!
