Scenario:

Someone puts in like 15 hours a week for an entire summer making a webseries and vlogging. They get thousands of views and have several thousand subscribers.

So I guess my question is....is maintaining a youtube channel considered a unique EC or would adcoms just laugh at u???

If such person wanted to invest more time into the channel this summer at the expense of being involved in a research lab doing bench work would u guys support that decision or maybe tell them they should focus on more "serious" ec's

It depends on how you package it and what subjects you touch on in your vlogs.

Giving your opinions on Lady Gaga´s outfits probably won´t impress them. On the other hand, using new media to participate in the public political discourse, raise awareness of important issues, help charity or promote science just might work.

So if you do a vlog version of ScienceDaily, go for it. If you´re aiming to become the new Perez Hilton, stop it right now - not just for the adcoms, but also for the sake of western civilization.

lol, and I would include it as long as your content isn't offensive, controversial, etc..

hahaha

what about making comedy sketches with a team of actors??? I mean I get a lot of msg's and comments about how the video made someones day bla bla bla. Too me its really significant, its very enjoyable, social, requires lots of work and makes people smile.

I just want to see what everyone else thinks.

post the link and we can decide

That's definitely something to include, although it might not be as good as research.

With a good story it could definitely work. It shows you're a team player, that you have broad interests, that you take initiative - all good things.

Sometimes we touch on stereotypes and things like that, but its always clear we are joking around. It's good to have a sense of humour isnt it! adcoms are human too! arent they....

pls dont tell me you are AMIR!!!!

Post link please. i do lots of things for leasure--spending time with my girlfriend, for example. but i think it would be silly if i counted all the hours i spend with her and listed it on my AMCAS.

Playing cello is a legitimate EC. Of course it is also pleasure. Listening to music is not legit. I have no idea what principle underlies this distinction, but I think most people would agree.

This is actually the first time I've heard this term. I'm not surprised it's an accepted word now.

i'd rather not post a link of my group here but our content is sort of similar to this....

Hmmm... Maybe you can expand your activities and list "Comedy Group Founder." Just go to a few improv nights at your schools or something. You can also list the online activities.

If you spin it well enough, it could make you seem like an interesting candidate. If not, it will just seem silly. I think it's a little risky.

aww, i think you should totally include this! it's unique and it's a significant hobby of yours. obviously, only include it if you still have room in your "15 most significant extra-curriculars" section of your AMCAS app--after you've included all med-school-relevant activities. but having a personality is important; sick human beings that are looking for comfort are going to look to you someday. it's a lot better to have a warm, friendly doctor who knows how to make people smile than a cold machine with no personality. plus, this will make you stand out in a sea of all-too-similar med school applicants. go for it👍

PS, I have a youtube channel too but it's kinda dumb I guess; I review cosmetics and talk about various chemical ingredients on the market, how they can harm you and why. I have a few hundred subscribers and I did, for a second, consider putting it on my application, but had too many other things to list so I didn't put it down. Yours, however, is worth mentioning🙂 good luck!

Thanks! that makes me feel a lot better lol I'm pretty sure I can put a positive spin on it and maybe I can show them a video that will make em laugh lol. Man so long as your putting yourself out there talking about what your passionate about your good in my books, whether that be comedy or cosmetics.

probably not a big difference maker, but more of a curiosity question: are you a Youtube partner?

If you're this girl, yes:

(AKA, the girl singing with Ariana Grande below)

OTOH...if you're this guy....

haha i understand your concern

Definitely if you're on nigahiga's team!

But then you would have said hundreds of millions of views and millions of subscribers...

i think bannie is trying to tell us he loves chris 😛

I wonder if Fred could use the fact that he has over a million plus subscribers in an application if he wanted to apply. xD

To me, people who "v-log," seem a bit insular and self-absorbed. I don't think it's a very good EC.

I dont think thats a fair statement, but ur entitled to your opinion.
It's just another way to communicate and connect with people.

I don't think it would be taken seriously, since internet is still not considered "formal" today in many ways.

do u think i should just talk about it at an interview?

sup man. do it!!!! also, post the link. what do the people who spend too much time online say? "this thread is useless w/o pics" so yeah...post it and we'll decide

lol kirbz ur back huh, I actually dont feel comfortable posting a link here. but check out the group reckless tortuga on youtube. were pretty similar to them.

okaly dokaly neighborino.

ps mcat was ridonkulous.

probably will take it again in march, we'll see.

anyways you should put it down as an EC, esp if you can condense your ECs to 14 and have that last space for it. it's cool.

Yea I'm for sure leaning towards adding it,

and about your mcat, just FORGET about it right now. Chances are if you thought it was difficult, so did everyone else. And the MCAT is scored relativly as u know. I remember thinking holy **** im gonna get like 5 in verbal and then i ended up with a 10 so best thing to do is enjoy your MCAT FREE LIFE!

and thx for the advice... good to have you back (I e-missed u?)
