Has anyone recieved an email about some sort of AAMC background check? It's asking for my SSN and a bunch of other information so I wanted to make sure everyone else got one before I put it all in online!

I got one too.

Me too.

Me too, it's harmless.

Quick question about OKC though.....
SO I'm not from Oklahoma, but OU is very high on my list and I was wondering what people think about the city. Also I'm going to look at places at The Brickyard after the second look and suggestions there and what is the Brickyard like?

Thanks!

I'm debating on whether or not to take human anatomy at OU. I have heard that it's not that similar in med school, but I would imagine that it would help in some way to prepare for it. Just not sure if it'd help enough to put myself through it. Does anyone have any perspective on this? Thanks

I didn't take anatomy before med school, and I did fine.

I'm from OK but I'm not sure what the Brickyard is. Do you mean Bricktown? The apartments there are brand new and really expensive. The campus is located in a rough part of town so you will definitely want to look in the suburbs.

If you want to get an apartment, most med students live at the Lincoln, which is a few miles away. Other places like Deep Deuce are in Bricktown and close to the nightlife, but pretty expensive and not worth it, IMO. If you really want to go to Bricktown, parking's relatively easy to find, even if it ends up costing a little extra.

Hey guys, yes by Brickyard, I meant Bricktown(Brickyard is a where I'm from)!

Ok so Lincoln is where most med student apartments are. Do most live in apartments or houses? Like I said I dont know much about OKC so I want to be slightly informed when I come to look for housing.

Everyone I know lives off campus except for one or two. The apts on campus don't hold a lot of students. I live in Edmond (12 minute drive), friend lives in Yukon, another in west okc by Putnam city north, another Nw okc. I don't talk to a huge number of people but I'm pretty sure most people commute.

I live in Midwest City, and it isn't a bad commute at all. There is a really nice looking apartment complex around N.E. 10th and Air Depot, which is only about a 10 minute drive from campus. I don't know much about it beyond that, though, except that it's called Legacy Corner. I live in an older neighborhood near there, and I like the area well enough.

Hey guys, I'm an MS1 at OU. If you got the request for an AAMC Background Check, you were accepted. At least this was 100% true last year.

Also, as far as where to live - the definite consensus among med students is that the Lincoln is the best in terms of location, safety, and quality. The prices are a bit high but not astronomical. You will definitely feel safe and comfortable there, though.

I can vouch for the Legacy Corner apartments (currently an MS1).

Does anyone know based on last year or from having heard either at interview day or from an admissions representative when we should expect to receive letters after the January 29th meeting? Is it a pretty quick turn around?

I know that I for one am already getting anxious waiting to stock the mailman! :xf:

I'm feeling the exact same way!

I looked at last years thread and it was 10 days after the final board meeting that people received the coveted BRE. So I've got Feb. 8th marked on my calendar as the day we should receive something from them!

Good luck to everyone and hopefully the next 13 days goes by quick!

I just looked through last year's thread myself and found the same thing. It looks like the final committee meeting last year was on 02/27 and letters started arriving 03/10. Some accepted students started getting their background check emails the day before on 03/09.

They didn't mention anything at my interview day as to how long it would take to get the letters out this year, so I can only assume it would be a similar timeframe. Maybe we'll get lucky and it will be quicker! ;)

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting!

Is there a reason some people are getting asked for background check info and others are not? I'm starting to bum myself out b/c I didn't get asked for any info :( . Good luck to everyone though!

You mean people are getting the background check emails today? Thats pretty quick considering the admissions committee just met yesterday

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure the people posting about background checks had already been accepted. I am assuming this because they posted this before the board had even met. The board just met yesterday.

^ yes

Hey guys, good luck! In my experience last year, the background check came the same day I got my BRE. But since I'm an Oklahoma resident, that may have been a factor.

I called OU today and they said they are mailing out the acceptances on Feb. 10th (not this friday...but the next). I'm guessing we will find out the results via the mail sometime around the 14th-15th. That big red envelope...it'd pass as a valentine in my opinion

Aww I was hoping it would be before the 9th because I'll be on vacation for the weekend... guess it'll make or break it. Good luck to everyone!

Does anyone know that rejection letters will be given out that day too? Or do they come out earlier? One of my friends was deferred but then got rejected last month before the committee meeting on the 29th. I thought all final decisions will be made after the meeting took place? Can someone clarify this for me? Thank you so much

Dotty told me it would be 7 to 10 days after the meeting!

Sooo.... which is it? Finding out the ~8th or ~15th? If they have already had the final meeting I don't see why they would need an additional week to get the letters out but I suppose you never know...

I haven't spoken with anyone directly but I've been assuming that all letters will be sent out after this meeting; Acceptance, wait-listed, and rejection notices will all be sent out together and received about the same day (depending on your proximity to OKC).

With regards to your friend, I think he/she got rejected prior to the final board meeting because in the deferred letter it states that the application is active and given every consideration during subsequent reviews and so I guess while reviewing the applications after an interview they reviewed all the deferred applications and decided they would reject your friend at that point instead of waiting until the final board meeting.

At this point I'm ready for all of this guessing and assuming I've been doing this entire application cycle to end!!! I wish the best to all of you and hopefully we will be classmates this fall! :)

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education approved a budget request Thursday that will give $500,000 to increase the number of students admitted to the OU College of Medicine, pending approval by the legislature.

Oklahoma ranked as 44th in the U.S. in number of physicians per 100,000 residents in 2010, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. To address this fact, both the OU College of Medicine and OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine increased medical class sizes in 2009.

The OU class size will increase from 165 to 200, and OSU from 88 to 115, pending extra funding, according to the Regents’ agenda.

In the request, called the Oklahoma Healthcare Physician Shortage Initiative, both schools asked for $500,000, as well as a $1 million allotment for two-year health-care programs around the state.

The extra funding should increase the number of students in Oklahoma medical schools and, ideally, those who stay to do residency programs in the state, OU President David Boren said in an email. Almost 80 percent of Oklahoma medical students stay in state to practice as physicians, Boren said.

The Association of American Medical Colleges predicts that the number of students entering medical practice will need to increase by 30 percent to cope with physician shortages and the strain of increased patients with insurance.

The physician shortage problem is only expected to increase in Oklahoma, OU-Tulsa President Dr. Gerry Clancy said. The Patient Protection Act, which will require everyone to purchase health insurance by 2014, is expected to increase the number of insured Oklahomans by 400,000.

“Oklahoma is in the bottom 10 states in virtually every category as far as physicians apply, including doctors per capita, specialists per capita and age of physicians,” Clancy said. “Oklahoma is the most challenged state in meeting the health needs of citizens in the next 10 years.”

OU medical students have the opportunity to study all four years in Oklahoma City or split their time between OKC and Tulsa. The OU Tulsa School of Community Medicine specializes in training physicians for under-served urban and rural areas in the state, Clancy said.

The requested funding will be allocated for building up the Tulsa school and its community outreach programs, according to the agenda.

In the past 25 years, the life expectancy of Tulsa-area residents has increased less than any other Oklahoma region, including a 14-year difference between north and south Tulsa, Clancy said.

The increase of students, as well as a program with the Kaiser Family Foundation that pays students to work in these areas, should increase the number of physicians available throughout the state, especially in underserved areas, Clancy said.

The budget request will now be presented to legislature, which opens Monday.

I wonder if this will affect c/o 2016--or if it'll go into effect for 2017 instead. Something to consider, IMO.

^ I know that OSU is expanding their class this year but they are already increasing the size of all the facilities and plan on being complete before the fall semester starts to accommodate the larger incoming class of 2016.

I'm not sure this will affect the c/o 2016 at OU because I don't think OU's facilities in OKC are large enough to accommodate an additional 35 students... unless they are planning on doing some REALLY fast construction (doubtful). I guess they could use the facilities in Tulsa and have the Community track students do all 4 years there. I have no idea I'm just speculating.

Technically the Tulsa track is merging with the University of Tulsa in 2014 to make their own School of Community Medicine in 2014, completely separate from OUCOM. At least, that was the plan a year or so ago; I'm not sure if things are on schedule or not.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

This is very interesting. I wonder if this would be something Dotty would be willing to answer in an email?

Has anybody heard what the chances of acceptance are for the deferred applicants?? They've sent out some rejections and since I haven't gotten a rejection letter yet I take that as a good thing?? Obviously, there's still the possibility of a rejection letter, but I was just curious as to how many kids are still left in the deferred pool, and of those, how many will get accepted?? I know this is kind of unanswerable since nobody knows for certain...but I am just getting anxious! Any news would help!!:xf:

Wait, someone already got rejected from the deferred list? When did they get the mail?

Yeah.. they got rejected like beginning of January. That's why I'm somewhat confident, due to the fact that they've been rejecting people and I haven't been rejected yet haha

From the OU College of Admissions Facebook page just a few minutes ago:

"Letters from the final Admissions Board meeting, which was held January 29th, will be mailed Friday, February 10th."

Good luck to everyone.

Sooo if you live in the OKC area you could possibly get the letter Saturday but more likely on Monday??

I would think that there is a good chance that they will arrive on Saturday if you live in the OKC area. I guess only time will tell, though.

Good luck to everyone!! The waiting is almost over!:):xf:

I am so ready for this to be over with....it is definitely possible for it to arrive Saturday, but I am putting it in my mind for an arrival on Monday. This has definitely been one long process. If I don't get accepted this year I will have learned a lesson. APPLY EARLY!!!!:D

I think there is a good chance we might get it tomorrow. I remember I got the deferred the letter on the day it was mailed.

Theres a very slim chance of that happening for me. My mail usually comes in the morning. Oh well, I've waited this long already, guess I'll just have to wait one more day...

Good luck to everyone, hopefully it will be a good weekend for all of us!!

Has anyone gotten a background check email today? They usually send one to the accepted people the day before the letters arrive

Same here. I'm guessing that if people were getting them this forum would be flooded with responses. Hopefully tomorrow is the big day.

Got a big envelope in the mail today from OKC... Not a BRE or even anything from OU though haha got me all excited for nothing.

I got excited when i saw the letters BRE in your comment.

Last year I got a rejection letter two days before others started receiving BREs. So hopefully no news is good news. Good luck, everyone :)
