2021-2022 Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Trying to occupy myself with work too! Otherwise, I'm also trying to focus on learning how to not worry (too much at least) while waiting :') It's a process though.

Did you get the management email?
Yeah, I know what you mean! I didn't get the email, but my AD was later than you all.

Congrats you guys!

For those who were accepted earlier, can you share roughly how many seats have been filled?

For those who have received offers earlier on, is there a chat group on whatsapp/telegram for this year's incoming class?

hi, guys, i was reading up on this forum and some people mentioned a 'management email' ? Is that an indication of a semi successful application cycle ? Cheers

Yea same question here! Even though not all offer holders mostly from early rounds might have joined the group, the number shall still help estimate our odds and see if some of us may go to apply other overseas school...
Hi, may I know how many people are in the group already? Thanks!

From past threads, I don't find if there is a difference between those who received one and those who didn't. I think only the admission team would know how it plays out.

By the way, did you send an inquiry to the admission team before receiving a management email?

I received the management email and just received my offer a few days ago. For international students from the US, does anyone know our chances of eventually returning back to the US for fellowship or working as a physician?

Hi does anyone know if duke accepts MCAT score of 505 🙃🥲
In theory, unless they have explicitly adopted an MCAT cutoff, it’s possible that they do accept applicants with that score but it would depend on the overall application. It’s worth realising that just because someone with x score gets in, doesn’t mean everyone with at least that score will. So I guess your question is really, will the 505 just close the door right away? We can’t really answer that, and even if someone knows someone who just got in with the same score, it might not apply to you either, since you are also your own individual :) I think you’re trying also to see if it’s possible for you to get in with this score, so you don’t have to retake. That’s fine, but the answer really hinges on how admissions assesses your application. I wonder, if you have had the chance to retake, the question of why you didn’t might present itself?

Some questions worth considering, imo, are whether you think you can/could have done better, and how you can improve on the next attempt? In the end if you want to know the more direct way is just to apply and see how it goes, rather than dragging this out by trying to answer the question other ways. Plus, realise that the score will eventually expire! So you might find you need to retake anyway.

Even if we could say there’s a 30% chance or whatever, you are either 100% or 0% one of the three accepted ones out of every 10. Abuse of statistics, perhaps, but what I mean is, you’re not going to get much info just asking if people with x score ever get in. All the best!

Does anyone know when they allow admitted students to start applying for the md-phd program? Also curious about whether you need to find a professor to be your supervisor before applying...

Probably best to ask the school directly?
Same just received it too
Sorry to hear that, guys. Hopefully you all get off the wait list!

Does anyone know what the general match rate statistics are for Duke-NUS, in particular for internal medicine or pediatrics?

Hello, congrats on the offer.

Just providing my two cents. I think it would be very rare for international US students to return to US for fellowship after spending a minimum of ten years (study + serving service obligation) in Singapore:
1. Portfolio built in Singapore. Not sure if the portfolio requirements are the same in Singapore and in US?
2. Networking built in Singapore. The profs, consultants and bosses you know are all likely in Singapore and they will be giving you recommendations.
3. Maybe married and settled down in Singapore during those ten years
4. Not accustomised to US scene after being in Singapore for so long and treating conditions that Asian tend to have either because of environmental or biological factors

Regarding match rates of duke-nus students, hmm i don’t think this information is published publicly. Residency is generally very competitive in Singapore given the limited number of spots and few hospitals, and there are students studying locally + students graduating overseas vying for those spots.

Pediatrics would likely be super competitive as only one hospital in Singapore specialises in that. Surgery is also very competitive. Some people apply for a few years and don’t get it. Not sure about internal medicine but you get the overall idea of the competitiveness.

Quoting a post from another user in an older thread 2019-2020 Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Application:

2) Bottlenecks at every career point. I have spoken to multiple MO who have been competing into limited training spots for years. I was even told that some who got into residency quit halfway because they realise there are no guaranteed consultant jobs. All these is after the straight out of med school residency application system is abolished. Post grad board exams have low passing rates that are set arbitrarily. Therefore, for someone to progress in the medical career, it takes a much longer and harder toll now. All these are legit considerations for guys
to consider. In the open house they show you that u can do your training after graduation, but reality can different.

Again, just my two cents. Have a good think about it especially if you hold other offers and all the best.

Thank you for your advice! I was curious about the general residency match rates in Singapore as I heard it was competitive.

Hello everyone! Anyone on waiting list got an update yet? Or has anyone tried to contact Duke-NUS further to get an update? :)

Btw first day of school is 18 July so I believe the school has more or less confirmed the incoming class
