Dream Jobs!

Where I'm from, we are all taught that if an owner comes into the hospital without their dog and tells you that their dog is itchy and they are itchy too, and asks could they have gotten something from the dog and if so what can you give the dog for it.....it's meth.

Not exactly related, but I think my favorite (really) conversations with clients are the dogs that are CLEARLY marijuana dogs, and the owner is there with teenage kids, and I get to ask if there's any chance the dog got into pot. I take a little bit of evil delight in watching the teenagers squirm in those cases.

I told you that story didnt I? We had 3 (pretty clearly stoned) teens that came in with a small breed dog (a pug) and exhibiting all the signs of marijuana toxicity. So we do blood work with their approval, but of course nothing shows up. So we go back in to the room and ask if he could have gotten into anything like pot? They all say no. We ask again and tell them we don't want to get them in trouble, we just want to treat appropirately...well, yes, their uncle has it for medical reasons.

We bring the dog to the back for fluid therapy and such and they start singing in the exam room - they changed the words to Because I Got High for the dog.

They always vehemently deny it until I go, "okay well that's a shame. I was really hoping it was pot tox because I can easily treat that and your dog would have an excellent prognosis. Since it's clearly not the case, there isn't too much I can do. I'm going to put together some transfer paperwork so that we can send your dog over to a neurologist for an MRI which is going to cost a few thousand dollars and it might be a brain tumor and your dog might be dying" and then magically some pot appears in the household in the recent past.

Hahahahahahahahahaha. I'm laughing, because I've pulled more or less the exact same thing. I usually sigh and say "Huh. Well. In that case, I'm going to need to do more diagnostics. And the prognosis was good for marijuana, but not so great for some of the other possibilities." And yup - suddenly somebody cops to maybe possibly kinda sorta having had some pot in the household that they forgot about that the dog maybe kinda sorta possibly could have gotten into.

I make sure to look super disappointed and sad and frantic and distraught when they deny it. Works almost every time. Except for this one RN client who was like, "I just knew if anyone he would be the one to have something catastrophic like that! I just know it. It must be a brain tumoooorrrrrrr, mwahhhhhhhhh." I convinced her to just let us do bloodworm and treat for possible toxicity since she wasn't going to go to referral... As I was putting together the estimate for his hysteric lady my tech tells me she needs to talk to me again. I was like, oh hell no I don't want to talk to this crazy lady again... But then she busted out the exam room and gave me a huge hug and was like, my daughter just called and said her friends came over last night with pot brownies, I'm going to kill her, I love you!

Reading this discussion was hilarious, but back on topic, my unrealistic dream job would be to both be a boarded surgeon, and open my own SA practice. And magically have the ability to take plenty of vacations/days off, and do volunteer/relief work at shelters or zoos without getting burnt out. I'll settle for just opening my own practice, though, and eventually having awesome associate vets so I can take a decent amount of time off. I'm still undecided as to whether I'll actually do an internship/residency.

Managing partner and reproductive specialist at an equine referral practice. That is my dream. :)

However, I sometimes wonder if I have it all wrong and I would be just as happy with a nice job in an office downtown with a good salary allowing me to do whatever I wanted. Own horses, go on vacations, etc. I've been thinking about that a lot lately.
I've been thinking of going back to my paralegal job that was in a cushy office with vacation days, paid holidays, sick time, no poop to clean up and enough money to pay for all my dogs and my horse. The thought of going 300K+ in debt to go to vet school is really stressing me out.

1. Use my genetics and ecology degrees to bring back the dinosaurs, open Jurassic Park, and then be the chief veterinarian for Jurassic Park.
OR
2. Travel the world and save endangered species along the way.

I'm late to party but let's be best friends.
