Yeah, you pretty much did. That is the straightforward interpretation of your post, particularly in the context you were responding in. To throw any other meaning in there requires some mental calisthenics. You may move forward to a different point from here on out, and hey, maybe the distraction will work and maybe you'll even win this internet argument, but at the end of the day, you still made an unnecessary joke that rubbed some people wrong because it did imply a certain association with that culture.
Plus, you're still making tactless jokes, like your subtext there. I'm not saying that we should all be PC all the time, but when you've clearly already angered someone and raised their hackles over cultural sensitivity, maybe that's the time to holster it, no?
Of course, you're right.

I'm honestly surprised I'm having such a hard time coming up with contributions to this thread. Maybe nearly everyone at my school is just decently informed?

I guess I do have kind of a cute but uninformed boyfriend story. I got a promotional mailing from Rochester after I applied there. He asked why they were sending me something in the mail, and after opening it I said "it looks like my application was so impressive that they've decided to go ahead and accept me pre-interview."
...he didn't recognize immediately that I was joking and that that legitimately can't happen. :smack: Guess I can't ever complain that he doesn't believe in my ability to get into med school!

What is the point of that last map? My statement that the majority of countries with muslim governments aren't part of the FGM map is still true. Also really calling you disgusting for being a bigot is a violation of terms but you insulting the entire muslim population somehow isn't? Nice.

Edit: Apparently you've removed the map you posted of the muslim population of the world; watch out, you don't want to back peddle too fast or you may hurt yourself.
I removed the map because it didn't adequately defend my point.

I'm sorry if I offended you, but I'd like to make it clear that I harbor no love or tolerance for any culture, religion, dogma or personal conviction which infringes upon the natural rights of any being.

And I'm trying to make the point, mostly for the benefit of others who may be reading this and know very little about the culture and would immediately believe you, that Islam doesn't condone this and it's been declared to be against the religion. Religion is a choice, if someone chooses to be muslim and abstain from drinking, pre-marital sex, and bacon then that's not infringing on their rights.

Oh wait, I thought of one more for tonight. Sitting in what I believe was Developmental Psychology. Not sure if it was a pre-med student or not.

Prof.: "Yes, so 13.5 out of 100 people (fill in whatever is described by that statistic... I forget).
Student: "Wait, I don't get it. How could you have, like, half a person?"

I didn't even think before impulsively saying (a bit too haughtily) "it's an AVERAGE..." I immediately regretted my rude tone, but I was a math major and I was absolutely stunned.

Very glad my mailing address isn't at my parents any more, that Rochester packet would have gotten my mother all excited.

I knew someone who cracked open an MCAT book for the first time ~3 weeks before the test, but said it was okay because they were reading through it at a pretty good pace

Another person I knew said they were going to get their CNA to show clinical experience, but never actually planned on working as a nurse aid

In the interest of full disclosure, I am the screener. I don't send those on to my dear committee (or I'd be referred to the appropriate medical service!).

So you're saying that you have the ability to massively troll people? What keeps you from going mad with all that power? Your will is far stronger than mine!

I'm embarrassed to admit that I actually did the same thing for my MCAT

They probably cut her's off when she was a little girl. :wtf:

That was so incredibly rude and ignorant. I agree with looncat - you implied it was in Muslim countries then went on to give a graph "courtesy of Unicef."

I have lived in these Muslim countries you mention including Egypt, and I have NEVER seen or heard of female genital mutilation occurring in these countries, not even 1 out of the thousands of cases my friends, colleagues and I were exposed to. I went to a medical school in the Middle East even though I was born and raised in the US, and I am shocked you can think it's okay for you to say such things with such a nonchalant attitude, especially since you somehow linked female genital mutilation, which isn't even something to joke about, to the original statement, which had to do with a hijabi resident not knowing where the clitoris is.

Sat next to a guy on a plane who claimed to have been accepted to Yale med school. Said he got "1 point away from perfect on the math section of the GRE"

I congratulated him and changed the subject.

No, you didn't explicitly say it was a muslim thing, you only offensively assumed that she's been mutilated because she wears a hijab. I'm well aware of the problem in these countries, which by the way are also plagued with war and famine that their government also ignores. And this map only proves my point as the large majority of muslim countries aren't even on there.

Also your ending quote, whether it was a joke or not, reveals your bigotry and ignorance, you contribute to cultural insensitivity and are disgusting.

I agree with you that J senpai could have worded his statements better and the ending quote was uncalled for. However the elephant in the room is why is FGM so predominant in Islamic communities? Surely you can't deny that? IMO, I think it has to do with Islam's view that men are superior than women and women should not stray sexually from men and therefore let's remove the clitoris so that the woman will not stray from the man for sexual pleasure.

Furthermore you talk about cultural insensitivity and I feel that such insensitivity largely stems from cultural ignorance. So maybe if I ask some questions now about Islam, you can clear the air and in the process foster stronger relations between Muslims and Non-Muslims?

First, if you read the Surahs in the Quran, you will note that it states in several places that "kuffars" who are non-believers like myself and most others in this thread, will burn in the hellfire after death. Furthermore the Surahs also state that the duty of a Muslim is to convert a kuffar and if the kuffar refuses to be converted, then kill the kuffar. The only exception is for Christian and Jews who are allowed to practice their religions as long as they pay a heavy "jizya" tax to muslims. Note that as a Sri Lankan origin Buddhist I don't have the option of paying jizya tax, either I convert to Islam or I have my head chopped off. Why does Islam have such militant hatred against other religions? Why can't it let other people do what they want to do?

Furthermore if you read the Hadith, specifically the Hadith Al-Bukhari, it clearly states that the Propher Muhammad married Aisha when she was 6 and consummated the marriage (had sex with her) when she was 9. Most Islamic scholars agree with the Hadith Al-Bukhari. Why do Muslims hold such deep respect to a man who is a child molester and a pedophile?

Apart from all this, the gender inequality in Islam is disturbing to say the least. Women don't have the same rights when it comes to property ownership and divorce proceedings. Women are forced to wear a hijab and abaya while Men don't have to wear anything. Men can have 4 wives but women can only have 1 husband.

The scariest part though is the violent militant nature of Islam. Muslims are taught that they need to conquer and dominate all other religions, it's in the Quran. Also, what do you have to say about taquiyya? Taquiyya (also in the Quran) basically allows Muslims to lie to Non-Muslims with no punishment from God as long as the lies are for the benefit of Islam.

Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now. I will end by saying this. Why do you think gyngyn, a legendary leader of sdn, liked J senpai's post in which he posted the UNICEF map and stated that "muslims are known for blowing up malls"? Why did gyngyn like that? I may be the person voicing these concerns but a lot of us here and elsewhere in the Western world share these same concerns.

As someone said this is not a place for religious debate, but may I just say that you are severely misinformed to the point where it is sad really. Islam doesn't condone killing of any kind and it is explicitly stated in the Quran that killing in a non-defensive way will get you sent to hell--you clearly have quotes out of context that you've likely read on some biased website. I could take quotes out of context from any religious text and make them sound horrible.
Also, women do have the same rights in Islam, they don't have to wear a hijab (that's noted in the Quran as a choice) and an abaya (maybe you mean burqa) is actually not even allowed in mecca and never mentioned in the Quran, they have every right to divorce for whatever reason; the property rights are different, but they are this way in many religions and it's something that modern muslims don't practice (notice I say modern). You are confusing the culture in some middle eastern countries with the religion. Some middle eastern countries treat women extremely poorly (Saudi Arabia) and this is not a reflection on the religion. In fact, Tunisia, a muslim nation, gave women their rights before the US even did.
Islam is not a violent religion, there are violent people who claim to be a part of the religion--every religion has these people. It's said in parts of the Quran that "you have your religion and I have mine", yet people like you enjoy leaving out these parts. The middle east is an unstable region and groups are often using religion as a means of controlling a population.

I will never change your mind, but all I ask is that you be respectful and not have an immediate hatred or fear of about 1.6 billion people in the world, the overwhelming majority of whom are minding their own lives.

Edit: Also maybe read more about the prophet before you ask why muslims respect him, and know that this was a time of political marriages where such things where not uncommon. Modern muslims don't do things like this. And in regards to the having 4 wives thing, only about 5% of the muslim population still do this, and in fact in the Quran it states that (and I am paraphrasing this quote) "absolutely everything must be equal between the wives, including love, and since it's very unlikely that many men can do this--most of you should have only one wife". I just wish people would be informed about everything before making blanket statements about a group of people.

Edit again: I don't really care what gyngyn does and does not like, though he/she has a lot of great things to say on this site, but gyngyn also liked my posts so your ending point is a little ridiculous. I'd wager the post was liked because it had a reliable source on it not because of a tasteless ending joke.
People like you and Jsenpai need to understand the impact you have on others, you may think making ignorant statements and attacking a group of people is part of a debate but what you don't know is that it makes a lot of people sad. It makes me so sad to think that if you ever found out someone was muslim, you'd automatically assume they'd want to kill you or that they're a terrible person. Please be respectful to others if what they believe in doesn't harm you.

Sorry for the long post.

I am not a religious scholar, but Suwar 8 and 9 seem pretty straightforward to me?

009.001
SHAKIR: (This is a declaration of) immunity by Allah and His Messenger towards those of the idolaters with whom you made an agreement.
009.002
SHAKIR: So go about in the land for four months and know that you cannot weaken Allah and that Allah will bring disgrace to the unbelievers.
009.003
SHAKIR: And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah and His Messenger are free from liability to the idolaters; therefore if you repent, it will be better for you, and if you turn back, then know that you will not weaken Allah; and announce painful punishment to those who disbelieve.
009.004
SHAKIR: Except those of the idolaters with whom you made an agreement, then they have not failed you in anything and have not backed up any one against you, so fulfill their agreement to the end of their term; surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty).
009.005
SHAKIR: So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

YUSUFALI: Remember ye implored the assistance of your Lord, and He answered you: "I will assist you with a thousand of the angels, ranks on ranks."
PICKTHAL: When ye sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): I will help you with a thousand of the angels, rank on rank.
SHAKIR: When you sought aid from your Lord, so He answered you: I will assist you with a thousand of the angels following one another.

008.010
YUSUFALI: Allah made it but a message of hope, and an assurance to your hearts: (in any case) there is no help except from Allah: and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.
PICKTHAL: Allah appointed it only as good tidings, and that your hearts thereby might be at rest. Victory cometh only by the help of Allah. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise.
SHAKIR: And Allah only gave it as a good news and that your hearts might be at ease thereby; and victory is only from Allah; surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.

008.012
YUSUFALI: Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): "I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instil terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers: smite ye above their necks and smite all their finger-tips off them."
PICKTHAL: When thy Lord inspired the angels, (saying): I am with you. So make those who believe stand firm. I will throw fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Then smite the necks and smite of them each finger.
SHAKIR: When your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.

008.013
YUSUFALI: This because they contended against Allah and His Messenger: If any contend against Allah and His Messenger, Allah is strict in punishment.
PICKTHAL: That is because they opposed Allah and His messenger. Whoso opposeth Allah and His messenger, (for him) lo! Allah is severe in punishment.
SHAKIR: This is because they acted adversely to Allah and His Messenger; and whoever acts adversely to Allah and His Messenger-- then surely Allah is severe in requiting (evil).

008.014
YUSUFALI: Thus (will it be said): "Taste ye then of the (punishment): for those who resist Allah, is the penalty of the Fire."
PICKTHAL: That (is the award), so taste it, and (know) that for disbelievers is the torment of the Fire.
SHAKIR: This-- taste it, and (know) that for the unbelievers is the chastisement of fire.

008.015
YUSUFALI: O ye who believe! when ye meet the Unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them.
PICKTHAL: O ye who believe! When ye meet those who disbelieve in battle, turn not your backs to them.
SHAKIR: O you who believe! when you meet those who disbelieve marching for war, then turn not your backs to them.

008.016
YUSUFALI: If any do turn his back to them on such a day - unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own)- he draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and his abode is Hell,- an evil refuge (indeed)!
PICKTHAL: Whoso on that day turneth his back to them, unless manoeuvring for battle or intent to join a company, he truly hath incurred wrath from Allah, and his habitation will be hell, a hapless journey's end.
SHAKIR: And whoever shall turn his back to them on that day-- unless he turn aside for the sake of fighting or withdraws to a company-- then he, indeed, becomes deserving of Allah's wrath, and his abode is hell; and an evil destination shall it be.

008.017
YUSUFALI: It is not ye who slew them; it was Allah: when thou threwest (a handful of dust), it was not thy act, but Allah's: in order that He might test the Believers by a gracious trial from Himself: for Allah is He Who heareth and knoweth (all things).
PICKTHAL: Ye (Muslims) slew them not, but Allah slew them. And thou (Muhammad) threwest not when thou didst throw, but Allah threw, that He might test the believers by a fair test from Him. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower.
SHAKIR: So you did not slay them, but it was Allah Who slew them, and you did not smite when you smote (the enemy), but it was Allah Who smote, and that He might confer upon the believers a good gift from Himself; surely Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

Sthaaaaap. Go argue religion somewhere else, and look up all the Biblical pro-genocide crap while you're at it.

So the other day I'm talking to a kid who's planning on applying next year.
Him: Yeah, so I think I'll just take the MCAT in the spring and then I'll have time to retake it if I need to.
Me: Well, you really should prepare better and only take it once. If you want to do practice runs, use the AAMC practice tests.
Him: Oh there are practice tests?
Me::rolleyes:, yeah there are. And you should never take the real thing for practice. A bad score never goes away.
Him: What do you mean? Don't they replace your score when you retake, like the SAT?
Me: :eyebrow: No. It's not like the SAT.

Take your bickering over religion to the lounge.

You're right, I'm sorry, it's just hard for me to ignore these things but I'm done now.

Hah! Thanks for the memory. You reminded me of this chick who flunked out of our nursing school second term, when clinicals started, because she didn't enjoy actually, you know, caring for patients. She had planned on being the kind of nurse that didn't do any patient care. (I'm still not sure what gig she thought it was she was getting into!)

Anyhow, she would always tell us all how she was so much smarter than us, that she had trained as a physicist, a nuclear physicist. Turns out she meant that she had an Associates and was a radiology tech.

The nursing school that I attended is very proud of its high NCLEX pass rate, which it achieves through brutal attrition. More than 50% of the people I started with were weeded out by the end of the second year. But there were a few folks, like the nuclear physicist and the sausage thief, that I was pleased to see go.

The sausage thief???????

Yeah, I did leave that bait dangling there, didn't I?

There was a guy at my nursing school... very unethical in many ways. Bit of a sociopath really, as he was able to be very superficially charming, even while engaging in the most heinous activities. He even managed to get elected to student government our first term, because he campaigned for it really hard and everyone else was so busy studying that we figured, sure, if he wants the extra responsibilities, let him have them.

He did not turn out to be a very good representative for our class. We turned him in for cheating, bullying other students, and lying on his documentation, but no one could prove anything, and he lawyered up and said he was being harassed by other students who had it in for him. So, the thing that got him kicked out of nursing school, the thing they could actually prove that he did, was that he made a habit of stealing food from the cafeteria. He would open up his grab-and-go breakfast sandwich and put three or four extra slices of sausage on it before wrapping it back up. He would then pay the $2 for the sandwich, without mentioning that he had added another $4 of spicy fried pork product to it.

They got it on video, and he was outta there, to the great rejoicing of students and staff alike.

Sounds like Ross University School of Nursing.

Medical school is very different than nursing school. Nursing school is MUCH easier to get into, so the attrition is much higher. They weed people out during the program. Even people who really studied very diligently and were good people would be weeded out because they weren't cut out for it. In medical school, the selection process is brutal, but once you are in, the fact that you were were considered worthy of the seat suggests that you are likely to succeed if you put in the effort.

The terrible attrition rates of the offshore schools just remind me of what most nursing programs are like.

That's why something like 25% of the prison population is psychopathic. That's just where a lot of them end up.

That's solely what I was referring to. Ross is very well known to essentially force students out of their school.

Senior year, I met a junior who was planning to take the MCAT that summer, giving herself a month or two to study. She asked if we could keep in touch so she could ask me for advice about studying/time management/etc.

I told her to ask away but I never heard from her until two days before her testing date, when she messaged me to ask about what she should memorize and about "the format of the test." She did not know that the MCAT is taken on a computer, not on paper.

That makes me angry. Your school should know that Carib medical schools are money hungry predators who prey on optimistic naive pre-meds. I'm sure the Carib adcoms will say stuff like this to fool the pre-meds into joining:

"It's very simple. Spend two years in the island taking classes, then do 2 years of clinical rotations in the US, take the USMLE exams in between and you will become a doctor, no problem."

"90% of our graduates match into a US residency and most of the remaining 10% match the following year"

"Imagine studying for medicine in a relaxing tropical environment. You will have the opportunity to visit the beach, snorkel, surf, and enjoy many other vacation activities while you study in the islands"

"You don't have to worry about the quality of our medical education. We are WHO certified, we are in the IMED directory for FAIMER. We are Avicenna certified. We have an official government charter from (Grenada, St. Kitts, St, Vincent, St. Maarten etc.) island. Our graduates are eligible for ECFMG certification and can participate in the NRMP. No worries"

"Why wait 2-3 years to join medical school when you can pursue your dreams and start in 1 month! We have three enrollment periods, in January, May, and September of every year."

"yes your stats are low (to the applicant with a 2.7 gpa and 18 mcat) but we can make an exception for you and let you come. Why don't you take the medical foundations/mph program first (with the accompanying $50,000 tuition) and then you can automatically start the MD program. No problem."

These schools are very sly. They will do anything and everything to take your money.

I went to an orientation week bbq for the general campus and it was quickly discovered that I was a medical student. Soon, I was swarmed by premeds asking me questions. Some of them were:

"I heard the MCAT costs $900, how much did you pay when you took it?... Well, it costs $900 now."

"I am signing up to be an emergency responder for the Red Cross because it will look good on my app with the word emergency responder. What do you think?"

"Do you ever sleep?... But don't you want to be a good physician? You should study more"

"Is it easier to pick up chicks as a medical student?"

And there I was, just trying to eat a hotdog and drink one of the free beers.

The local "pre-med fraternity" seems to be very excited about their med school vacations...:smack: I more or less audited one of their meetings about 2 years ago and a guy from AUC was there and he used language nearly identical to that used in your post.

Ugh. I apologize on the behalf of this group. We are largely comprised of ignoramuses who think we're hot **** just because we want to be doctors.

"I heard the MCAT costs $900, how much did you when you took it?...

Were these UW premeds?

Ugh. I apologize on the behalf of this group. We are largely comprised of ignoramuses who think we're hot **** just because we want to be doctors.
It wasn't so bad. But I was more just frustrated that they were stopping me from being able to eat. It was definitely enough to keep me still bothered a few weeks after the fact.

Yeah. I don't normally travel to other schools to partake in their orientation week bbqs.

Uhm... why not? Does the free beer and hotdog not agree with you if it is sponsored by a rival school? =) At least you are no sausage thief.

One of many reasons to not divulge that you're a doctor/med student outside of the hospital. I'm actually fine with premed questions - we were all there at one point. The worst is when you get cornered by someone with a medical issue and they think you're their personal physician for the event. I used to be in a sports league where someone would bring a list of questions every week to ask me.

I finally have one ^.^

Yesterday a fellow student and I are talking about the relative increase in difficulty of the new MCAT and how much more test stamina we will need with the additional hours.

Me: yeah by the 5th hour I'll probably just be putting random responses

Student 1: yeah I know, it's going to be crazy

Another student hears us talking and interrupts.

Student 2: what?! The new MCAT won't be harder! It's going to be so much easier now that it will be on the computer!

Me: -_-...

She goes for a bonus

Student 2: PLUS... We will get instant scores!
