My daughter is a freshman neuroscience major at UCLA, hoping to go to medical school. She has a 3.6 for the first two quarters but finds the school too big and impersonal. She took the last quarter off and has been applying to smaller transfer schools that give merit aid to transfers and have good med school admissions. She got a nice offer from Goucher. I am confused on the difference between going to med school right from college vs the post-bac program that seems to have good admission rates. Is taking all the courseword as an undergrad the same thing as doing the post-doc, and are med school admission rates the same? It's such a different environment, we hate to see her give up UCLA but also don't want her to be miserable for 3 years. Insights on Goucher? We really don't understand how all this works.

The proportion of undergraduates applying to medical school from a given university who are successful in garnering admission to medical school is not always the same as the proportion of post-baccs from the same univeristy who are successful in garnering admission to medical school. In the case of post-baccs, the admissions process is different, the advising/counseling may be different and the students' maturity and motivation may be different. Don't assume the success rate of one based on the success of the other.

Goucher does have a fine post-bacc program. I do not know anything about the quality or the "success" of its undergrad pre-med advising.

taking the coursework as an undergraduate is the same as taking it in a post bacc. Depending on the program, post baccs are designed to allow students who may not have originally been premed or people changing careers to get the required course prerequistes. They also can be for those who have to repair a bad academic record. Your daughter is a regular undergrad and the post bacc program is not for her

If your daughtet is not happy at UCLA, she needs to transfer. There is no reason for her to suffer under the guise that it is somehow a “better” premed school. If she moves to an environment where she can thrive and be a top student, she will be a strong mefical school candidate
Thank you! She definitely feels it's too big for her

Thanks so much, we will dig deeper to find out more.
