Ok guys...please keep this thread on topic

What's your opinion of hats like the one pictured below? Will I get some fashion cool points on residency interview day?

 so lesson learned is to take any comments on your appearance with a grain of salt I guess...
Definitely. I had this horribly awkward moment with my SO's mom. I walk in and she's wearing a pink sweatsuit, and all I can think is "Oh my god, that is the tackiest thing I've ever seen," and I'm still thinking it when I go to say hello. I'm thinking so much about the horrible outfit that I let slip out "I love the pink!!" Of course I got an all-pink outfit from her the next Christmas. :bang:

The goal of the interview suit is to leave the impression of a well groomed gentleman. None of the details should prompt remarks.

When a comment leaks out, it's often a twist on the sentiment you experienced!

:lame: Choose your words wisely when giving "compliments" lol

Man y'all are a bunch of stiffs, wore that pink/lavender shirt and tie to both my interviews and got multiple compliments for it, although I guess it helps to be really, really ridiculously good looking

Sorry dude, you looked ridiculous and you should perhaps try learning to dress like a grown up. Tacky attention getting outfits aren't really the best choice.

Good luck all the same.

Incorrect.

Come to think of it, I haven't dressed up that much for work lately. I wore this the other day and one of the surgeons called me ron burgundy lol.

Uhhh....

Context, bro. That's what I wore to work on a day when I saw a couple of patients but was going out with coworkers right after work for a department event.

This is what I wore for a talk. I wear similar stuff for interviews minus the pocket square, though I kinda want to wear one, but don't for the exact reasons I criticized the other poster. It's not tacky like that tie and shirt, but it's attention getting and I don't want to be known as pocket square guy for an interview.

You dress for the occasion. When I'm at work and I dress well, it gets patients attention and gets them talking. I've had people comment on funky socks, shoes, squares, whatever. It inspires confidence and makes me a bit more approachable.

When I'm at an interview, I'd rather have people comment 'good answer' than 'nice tie'. I prefer to talk for myself and not let my clothes talk for me in that context.

Incorrect.

First, recognize a comment hidden in sarcasm/a movie quote when you see one.
Second, everyone here is taking themselves way too seriously. They're acting like wearing a striped tie with more than one color is as unprofessional as showing up with purple hair and gage (sp?) earrings.
Third, I wasn't trying to show off or get attention, it was a shirt and tie combo given to me as a gift which I thought would go great with my grey suit. What was so attention grabbing about it?

The fact that it was a glossy pink tie...? Your outfit screams 'YAY FASHUNZZZZZ'. Proper interview attire is more muted. That's what this thread is for.

And yeah... I got the zoolander reference. I'm not an idiot. That still doesn't change what I think though even if you send a few orange mocha frappachino's my way.

No one is saying that what you wore was more than two standard deviations from the norm, or that you won't get in because of your choices. Rather, because this is a thread dedicated to best practices, even moderate deviations can be discussed.

That's reasonable, I did appreciate the advice even if I didn't use it completely for interviews.

I think you should just wear a fez.

This should go well with one of my suit combinations. Blackish suit with a red power tie and a red fez.

I will also be using a sun hat for interviews on a very bright day. Need to decrease the risk of cutaneous melanoma.

I have an interview coming up and my favorite color combination I want to wear happens to be the schools colors. Wear it or don't wear it?

It looks like pandering. Unless the colors are navy (or charcoal) and white...
Colors appropriate for a football field are rarely associated with refinement or good taste.

This week's winner for worst interview attire (male category) goes to the young man in a saturated olive, high luster Thom Brownesque ensemble, tailored skin tight in both jacket and trousers. The effect produced by the foreshortened leg and wild socks was a real eyeful, making the pencil thin tie the most restrained aspect of the outfit.

I wish there were a way to give anonymous feedback to the applicants, but posting here will have to serve.

Which combination looks best with white shirt? I personally think the navy blue tie is best (my favourite tie) but I don't think it goes well with my suit, which is somewhat unclear in the pic but is sort of a hybrid between navy and black. I think the light blue would probably go best. Thoughts? If none of these work, I might just get this one: http://www.thetiebar.com/product/35155

Hey all,

Could one of you give this a quick thumbs up or down? I'm thinking of this tie, a white shirt, and charcoal suit. Too boring?
I'm currently fighting for a pair of black Park Avenues on eBay.

Thanks in advance!

Bleh -- black and white polka dots with white shirt and grey suit? Not enough contrast IMHO.

I'd go for a navy or green tie with white pindots. It'll look great with the charcoal suit.

The navy tie is the best of the ones you posted. Tie bar one is okay as well, but none of them are my preference as I like different neats. They're fine though.

Just got invited to a wedding this June... I know this thread is for interviews, but whatever.

I'm planning on getting a grey suit (99% sure of this. but I've been flirting with the idea of navy). I'd like to wear a pink shirt but not sure what color tie? I'm thinking that the black and white polka dot one posted earlier might be nice! thoughts?

I think a nice navy would work better.

Edit: Eh, now that I think about it, I'm not a huge fan of the first one. I think it works, but i'm just not a big fan. I think you get the idea though.

I think you'd look pretty dope with the grey suit and that tie.

I'll have to go look for some brighter colored ties to match my suit. I'll still probably end up getting that pin-dot one because i like it haha.

Anyone doing pocket squares? Is something like this okay?

What about tie bars/clips?

Thanks again!

Edit: How about these with the charcoal suit/white shirt?

Do it! I like it!

Regarding pocket squares, I don't think i've seen anyone with one at any of my interviews. But I know @Winged Scapula loves em!

Thinking of getting a gray suit for my next interview.

Would a blue shirt and alternating blue stripe/gray stripe tie work well with that?

Weddings are awesome because you can be a bit more creative with what you wear. my favorites this year have been my navy suit (really a touch lighter than navy) with burgundy pin dot tie, and my grey suit with a colored shirt of your choice and a grey knit tie... and never forget the coordinating pocket square for these events!

Which one did you like, Mrs. Ludgate?

Sorry didn't notice the edit. I like all of them! But for an interview (ie. more conservative event), I'd go with the last one. However, I think skinny ties give a more "we're going downtown" feel than a "hire/accept me" feel. But i do think the color/pattern is fine.

Edit: Also, I think it's technically Mrs. Dwyer!

Edit2: Actually! I just looked it up... It's TECHNICALLY Mrs. Ludgate-Dwyer.

Love that show so much. Thanks for the feedback!

Okay I have two more questions for you experts out there.

First off, I'm looking to spend around $500 on the suit/tailoring if possible. I already have shoes/shirt. Would you recommend a place like Norstrom Rack?

Second question. I usually wear my hair with very short sides, with sideburns that come to a point. The top is longer and i spike it. Is this conservative enough?

Thanks!

I like Suitsupply with alterations for the $500 mark. The tailoring is off-the-rack but the best quality Italian wool you can get for $500-600, imho. It's also canvassed.

Is wool the preferred material?
Also, is two buttons the way to go?
Thanks, I'm a newbie at this stuff.

This sounds way too edgy for a medical school interview.

I was very pleasantly surprised with my suit supply suit for the price. To the extent that I keep almost buying more of them despite having no real need for them.

I did buy their higher end one though...would be interested to compare the cheaper option.
Agreed.

Not male, but we have a Suit Supply near my house and I am often found admiring the suits in the window and nudging the person next to me to go in.

I was in new york recently and totally coincidentally walked by the suit supply store. I did a full on looney-tunes head take and had to be dragged down the street as we were running late already.

Next time you're in the city, check out charles tyrwhitt suits as well. They also have some good stuff in the 350-500 range.

Honestly, I'm more a fan of classic proportions. I don't care much for the name on the suit. These two brands are great. I like J Crew's stuff too, but the lapels are too slim and trendy for my liking.

I'm a big fan of Suitsupply, too. Great for the price.

Issues with suitsupply is that they don't do separates and their drop sizes are pretty limited. I'm like a 10-12 drop depending on how things go and I don't have much choice for stuff from them since you can only alter waist so much. Other than that, they're pretty great no matter the price. Their 'la spalla' style (waterfall) shoulders look pretty awful sometimes though.
