Yale re rejection. Programs really need to keep track of their rejections. Still no IV. Geisinger did not get back to me after the inquiry email. Did anyone hear back from GEisinger?

Yeah, same second rej from Yale and no news from Geisinger.

Not yet... its been only 2 days since I submitted it, so I doubt we'll hear back at least until the end of the week...

Just a heads up to register for the NRMP. It is separate from MyERAS and opened on July 30th. I didn't think it was a big deal, but one of the programs that offered me an interview sent me an email asking why I hadn't registered yet (or at least put my NRMP number on my MyERAS profile). It seems that they are checking so you should go ahead and register if you haven't already.

Thanks slothrop77. I figured i'll register after i get an IV

Yup, geisinger questionnaire done but no replies yet. Has anyone on the forum noted that many of the programs that have sent out interview calls to the lucky ones here haven't sent you anything yet? No IV calls or rejections. I wonder what that means. Maybe they have you on a backup list or maybe its going to be a mass rejection later on?

Btw, Is there any historical "number needed to match"? I mean would it be overkill to go to say 10 interviews if you're lucky enough to get that many invites?

wondering the same...

I seeem to remember from last year or the year before's thread, someone said 8. Then someone said most match at their top 3.

How they got to these numbers? Beyond me...

Congrats Snakebite.
Most IMGs I've talked to interviewed at 5 to 8 places and matched... Didn't seem right to ask them how high they had ranked the program that they matched at! I assume for an AMG the number would be less than for an IMG.

yup, and nephro/endo want to snag/pre-match people as soon as they can. I know, and yet can't help the craziness. It's a relatively quiet friday night moonlighting spot feeding the anxiety, can't say am not enjoying it a little bit too. 2 admissions since 4.30 pm - ridiculous!

Is there such a thing as prematch for fellowships?

Is there such a thing as prematch for fellowships?
Yes. Programs only have to have 75% of their spots (over a certain period of time like 3 or 5 years) go in the Match. How common they are is something I don't think anyone is going to be able to tell you.

I got e-mail from them. But they said if you have j1- visa we will give you interview. My visa is h1b. I am ok with changing but they want it now.

That sucks. I am even surprised that you are willing to change to J1. I am sure you will get others.

Looking for advice. Would people please rank the following programs in desirability?

MUSC
UVa
Cincinnati
Kentucky

Hmm...
MUSC - ?clinically+++, lots of IP, decent research/masters if you want it
UVa - clinically solid, ?kinda in the middle of nowhere
Cincinnati - great ILD, ++ city
Kentucky - heard good things about both the program and Lexington, but the above programs probably give it a run for its money either way

Disclaimer: Most of this is perception/hearsay; only ever been in Cincy. Still, location-wise, Cincy>>Charleston >>UVa/KY
BTW DBiii, all I heard from Kentucky was - Save us a date, the invite/dates are on their way, and then nothing after that. Did you hear back from them?

I have not heard anything further from Kentucky.

You said "MUSC - ?clinically +++" does that mean you've heard they are strong clinically but you don't know for sure, or that you highly question their strength as a clinical program.

? was an error; I have heard/know they are clinically solid - very hands-on.

From previous application year threads, it sounds like Alabama sends out invites via snail mail... can anyone confirm this?

Brown 8/15

What do people know about brown other than what's on the website? Give me the gossip and the hearsay. :)

Ok guys, I got a situation. I'm waiting for Program X to confirm my interview date (they asked me to rank four different dates) and while I'm waiting for their reply I keep getting other interviews so all of a sudden there is only one possible date left out of the four to go to Program X (luckily this was my #1 date).

Should I:
1) Send a polite email and ask them when I can expect a confirmation of the actual interview date?
2) Tell them that dates are drying up, a long-term patient is having a wedding on three of the dates so there is only one date left that I can come?

Please advise.

I think doing #1 is very reasonable, especially if you've been waiting awhile for confirmation of your interview dates.

I've been calling every program to set an appointment date rather than send an email... including the programs that had asked me to send my top 4 preferences, and they have all seemed very polite and courteous on the phone... I dont know if thats a big no no, however, based on my experience, I think it should be okay for you to call or at least send a polite email... IMHO

I called to set up my interview date too. The coordinator seemed to prefer it and thanked me for calling.

Just made NRMP richer by 65 box. Now waiting for interview calls to rank lol

None are particular standout over any of the others. Rank based on CAREER GOALS. Where fo they have the path, people, and/or procedures you want most.

This is how you all should be thinking about this.

Supposed to be solid. Nothing stand out on a national academic scale just a good group doing good things. Supposed to be one of their better divisions. But I did not apply or interview there.

Thanks for the feedback.

VCU 8/15

Where does CCU fall among some of these other programs I'm considering:
UVA, BU, MUSC, Brown

Should I scratch my Georgetown interview to go to VCU?

Do you mean CCF? (Cleveland Clinic?)

I trained under someone in residency who trained pulmonary/crit at VCU. And I was always impressed by her. I don't know as much about Georgetown, which is supposed to be a good group by reputation.

I think I'd try and see both if you can. But if it's one over the other . . . Then I'm not sure again how to advise outside of where are they seeing the stuff you want, doing the stuff you want, or have the people you want to work with? Based on location alone I think VCU, the mountains, and college town win out for me but if you're more of an urban creature then Georgetown. DC is supposed to be a very cool town (but expensive!)

@jdh71 , any feedback on 2nd wave interview calls? I have calls from a couple of very decent places, got one from UCLA yesterday but I know from our list on the forum that I wasn't in the first wave of interview calls. Does this affect your chances of matching into one of these places?

I don't think it cuts into your chances. Not really. From my sense looming into the process at the academic level I think a lot of times the first wave is the "agenda wave" - these are the particular folks that the division chief wants for their own reasons, often political, often related to hoping to snag someone who they think will be a superstar researcher. But in any given cycle this probably represents about 50 of the applicants and they all kind of fight over this cream group and then the next wave is the "realistic wave" the folks that the PDs and assistant PDs have gone through the apps and invited.

There is a chance in most divisions that the chief will be hand picking the top of the rank list for their own reasons but those people can only go to one place and on match day once that settles out the rest of you get matched up.

Does that make sense? Basically it doesn't hurt your chances outside of only the tip top spots where it will be a knife fight.
