We should have a bike race whenever we meet up.
By any chance is this where you are at right now?Went yesterday to my mom's. She and my stepdad have spent the past 2/3 months in some state of being sick/laid up, like a pair of binary starts, so nothing has been done in their yard and this month looks like more of the same - surgeries ahoy! Took my eldest with me and she and stepdad helped out as possible but literally spent the entire afternoon picking up sticks, branches, and "limbs" bigger around than my waist that had fallen off as both normal consequence of 100-year-old maples and from the ice storms this winter featured. I did get some great true morels that pop up in their yard as a tip, though, so tonight is morel and asparagus risotto!
My lower back is really muttering at me like the little old dude from UP, and I've still got to mow our yard today with a push mower and it's the first mow of the season and overdue! Hubby would do it but is building this new flock's chicken tractor. Mannnn.... Somedays I'm just in it for the acetaminophen.
By any chance is this where you are at right now?
My forearm hurts so much from climbing. I thought it was from not having used the muscles before but im pretty sure it's because I'm getting stretch marks from the muscle growing too fast!
That's not the only option, though...I've definitely been on outdoor toprope trips, it's just harder to find a good spot for it!
I've always liked climbing stuff, and never done it in a 'safe', indoors place before, so that helps a bit, but I still found that I had to climb to the top and just jump off the highest point multiple times before I relaxed on the trickier bouldering routes. Well, tricky for me, I'm stuck around V3 (tho I took several weeks off, now I'm probably a V0 again, lol).Haha I got my first 5.8+ yesterday on my third time climbing ever.
Hoping to be able to do a couple of 9s soon. Grip strength will definitely be an issue and so will the fact that the rental shoes absolutely blow for the harder stuff...
Congrats to your wife and to you for exercising reasonable caution.
If I was going to be here longer I'd definitely get in on the lead action as soon as possible. I think this gym requires being able to do 5.10 at the minimum before starting that. The class is like 200 though. Oy.
I'm really hoping that there's a good climbing gym near where I go to school. It's a great way to get a workout post back surgery!
Bouldering is fun too, but falling sketches me out a bit.
I can see that. I've always climbed random trees and whatnot, ever since I was tiny, even had a few bad falls (one which ended on the roof of a 2.5 story house, lol)...and it never slowed me down before. When I started bouldering, though, I still worried about the top of the wall. So the first few times I went, I spent some time at the beginning just climbing to the top and making myself jump off until I got comfortable with it. It helped a lot - not nervous = not deathgripping the wall unnecessarily = forearms less tired!Haha I got my first 5.8+ yesterday on my third time climbing ever.

I'm the guilty party - not sure *how* I did it (was trying to merge 2 "what to wear" threads). I'm trying to fix it...carry on.
Should have merged those threads with the Interview Outfit threads
I was going to object to the killer label until I went back and reread my avvie. Then I was justFor some reason, your username and avatar combo made me think you're an android of some sort. Or a killer cyborg (as opposed to the friendly cyborg of @Cyberdyne 101 )
Should have merged those threads with the Interview Outfit threads
Well, that will give a solid boost to the "Worst Interview Mistakes" thread, which will help overall ratingsYEAH....that's all we need: hapless pre-meds showing up for interview wearing scrubs or a collared shirt and jeans (as is the advice in the "What to Wear" thread).
Ok I've done about all I can.
I've done a search in this thread for "shadowing", "what to wear", etc and moved the results to a new destination thread.
However, in 105 pages I'm sure I've missed some. If you come across one which is misplaced, please use the Report function and I/we can move it into the correct thread. I'm sorry about the confusion.

Well, I for one am glad about the little thread combo snafu. For some strange reason, I didn't realize this thread existed and that I could be social. Now I know. Thank you @Winged Scapula

I completely stopped bouldering. I've had enough ankle injuries, it just isn't worth it. Also, I don't particularly enjoy working ridiculously hard moves. If there was a 10,000 foot 5.10, it would be my favorite route. Half of me pushing to climb harder stuff is so that I can climb the easier stuff more easily and get less tired.
Lead classes are silly. Gotta find someone to walk you through the basics and then just practice on top rope until things are second nature. Might be different where you are, but I have always had misgivings about a single class being what you need to learn how to lead.
Ah. I like the thinking aspect. I do wall occasionally to build up some stamina, but for me the tricky bits are kind of the point! I don't even like endurance in normal exercise, so I don't go looking for it in climbing, tbh. Also, I usually go to the gym alone, so that makes it harder to plan for anything involving belay.I completely stopped bouldering. I've had enough ankle injuries, it just isn't worth it. I've got no reach and no arm strength of any variety (forearm or no)...honestly, there are some routes which require strength, but the good ones are all about balance and strategy! I know plenty of people in your weight range (tho not muscle range) who don't seem overly hampered by that aspect. It just takes several sessions before your arms figure out what's up.I can do the V0 and some V1 stuff. I don't have the forearm strength for it and honestly I'd have to cut weight if I wanted to do it. I weigh like 180 and I plan to keep lifting to maintain. Climbing is just more forgiving.
I like bouldering because it can teach good technique and how to move more cautiously. I'll probably keep at it a little bit, but end up climbing down the wall instead of jumping off.

Not trying to push you into bouldering - the whole point is to do what you enjoy - I just think you'd do better than you seem to expect!
I was in Atlanta for a 3 day Aikido seminar. If anyone is ever around Emory, they should stop by the Slice & Pint. It's on the roundabout just outside the main entrance, and it's pretty great. They brew a bunch of beer on location and even make their own mozzarella.

Bouldering? is that like Denvering or Colorado Springsing??
Yes! Might not sound so cool for you, though.Anyone have a go-to meal or snack that can be thrown together with minimal effort and time when one is starving, tired and lazy?
Weird suggestions welcome.
I honestly just cut chunks of cheese off the block and eat 'em. Balance it with a bunch of fruit. If I'm reallllly hungry and tired and lazy, I get a can of tuna and eat that, the chunk of cheese, and some sort of raw veggie or something in a rotation. It's almost like having a tuna melt, except it's cold and not assembled. I usually feel full after, though.Anyone have a go-to meal or snack that can be thrown together with minimal effort and time when one is starving, tired and lazy?

Moar minimal plzYes! Might not sound so cool for you, though.
If I'm late in the morning I heat up some oatmeal, add more water, then pour like a 1 scoop and half of whey protein. Mix that muggg and I have my protein and clean carbs to start my day. If I'm super duper late I make a protein shake and pour in a cup of oats and drink and chew that thang.
Cereal bars and a water bottle.I honestly just cut chunks of cheese off the block and eat 'em. Balance it with a bunch of fruit. If I'm reallllly hungry and tired and lazy, I get a can of tuna and eat that, the chunk of cheese, and some sort of raw veggie or something in a rotation. It's almost like having a tuna melt, except it's cold and not assembled. I usually feel full after, though.

Well in that case, my roommates and I in college used to bake a weekly cake, no joke. Talk about quick and dirty snacking! There was never a moment when we didn't have cake!Heh, though I do not mind keeping my carbs dirty (see my username) I actually love this. I work at a health food store and receive more protein samples than a non-lifting lass knows what to do with (other than just drink it, which does nothing for me). I'm taking this under serious advisement.
Cheeeeeeeeese. I would have killed for a hunk of gouda last night. Or some apples and brie..........
Only suggestion I have for you is to serve the following to me and @mehc012 and everyone here this delicious and yummy treat.
Some of that herbed cheese spread for frosting?Would I ever! But that is NOT a low maintenance endeavor (I imagine, because I surely didn't make it myself).
I'm still in a cheese state of mind, though. I think I would like a tiered cake made of cheese. Like a wheel of parm, a wheel of gouda, then a wheel of brie, decorated with olives, gherkins, cured meats and whatever.
