What's that April 15th thing mentioned above?

If you used VMCAS, none of the schools can pressure you to make a decision before April 15th. So I think that after April 15th, decisions will start to be made quickly...I think...

It's the deadline accepted students need to send in their deposit by in order to guarantee them a seat next year

I'm looking at the academic calendar online and am a little confused. Is it like the typical school where you go from mid-August to mid-December, winter break, mid-January to mid-May, and summer for 2/3 months (this is what I'm interpreting from the calendar)? Or is it like Ross, where it's school even in the summer?

its like a traditional school year:
1st year two 120 day semesters fall and spring, 1 month winter break and 3 months summer break
2nd year two 120 day semesters fall and spring, 1 month winter break and 3 months summer break
3rd year two 120 day semesters fall and spring, 1 month winter break and straight into the clinical year end of May/beginning of June

Soo if we aren't accepted by the 15th then is there still hope?

my understanding of SGU admissions is that its a rolling admissions process and that applications for an august cycle are due the june before and for january, the november before.

Thanks for that info! The next thing I am confused about: for those that enter their first year in January, when do they graduate? Because aren't they starting their fourth clinical year in the middle of the year (January) and at a US school? Does this thus mean that their fourth year actually ends in the next January, and they graduate in January (but the ceremony is in May)?

it means you get 3 summers instead of 2 :) yes - you start clinics in Jan. (so you even get a small winter break too) and finish in a year. graduate in Jan with ceremony in May (i do wonder if at some point that will change with accepting 100+ students per term instead of the smaller numbers previously)

Okay great! I was starting to get nervous! It's almost been a month since my interview.

Did any of you apply for January 2014? I had my interview in October and still have not heard back! I got an email saying I should hear this week and never did :/

That is so frustrating bc that is such a long time to wait! Wow! I thought waiting since Jan was bad, but that gives me a new perspective!

I was accepted today :) I'm very honored and so happy! I know people patiently waiting so I will fill you in: I interviewed in January, I found out today through email and in the email they said that they had a great increase in applicants this year (I'm assuming due to AVMA accreditation) so I was wait-listed for fall 2013 and accepted into Jan 2014. Looking forward to all the positive changes coming my way :)

Hope this helps people get an idea of how long things took, and good luck to everyone waiting to hear!

That's awesome that since you were wait listed they accepted you to January term!! Does anyone know if they do this often? I was planning on reapplying for january if I didn't get fall.

i believe that if you apply for a term that is "full" and they would otherwise accept you, they will roll your application forward into the next class. same for ross

Thanks! I actually see as kind of a gift, i wasn't planning on having extra time so now I feel like I can really make extra money and prepare!

Any experience with or knowledge of the Academic Enhancement Program? I have been enrolled in it and it seems like a positive asset, but I have never heard of it before. Thanks!:)

yay for extra money! you'll want that for the beer-that's-cheaper-than-water ;)

my experience with AEP is this: you must attend a small group review session once a week as well as an open review group once a week during term 1. after that? no follow through, despite what the program claims. we used to tease that the only people they wanted to succeed were the AEP students and the rest they were just collecting the money from ;)

This makes me even more excited about HOPEFULLY getting to go to school here!! Still waiting to hear back after my interview.... I checked out your blog, very cool! The pictures are beautiful! How hard is it transporting your dog back and forth with you from the states when you come home?? I have two dogs, one of which I would like to bring with me eventually but I have heard mixed things about how difficult/easy it is getting them in and out of the country! haha

Guys Guys!

I found out today that I was accepted into January 2014!! (I'm waitlisted for August, but TOTALLY okay with it... at this point in time its actually my preference).

I'm still in complete shock. My dreams literally just came true.

Congratulations to those who were accepted! I'll be turning down my acceptance so hopefully someone else can receive good news.

Where are the typical affiliated schools SGU 4th years attend? I know which vet schools are affiliated, but I know that Ross also has the same affiliated schools; so, do some of the affiliate schools tend to take Ross students over SGU and/or vice versa? I ask because I know of a vet who went to Ross and then UPenn, but I don't personally know any SGU grads, so I'm unsure as to where they usually go? Has anyone ever heard of SGU 4th years spending clinical rotations at UPenn/Cornell/Tufts/Michigan?

where students go varies by year and where they want to go. we don't have an affiliation with Tufts currently so thats out of the question, but we have affiliations with the other 3 you listed (Michigan is brand new)

affiliate schools have a contract with SGU so they take up to the number of students they've contracted for.

Got an interciew for April 24th! :D So excited to learn more about SGU!

Thanks for that info!
The main reason I asked: my vet (who went to Ross) showed me an article on VIN about Ross 4th years' potential future: Buffalo may open a veterinary school in addition to the definite teaching hospital. Ross is in talks (if Buffalo does build a vet school) of sending all of its 4th years there, instead of the numerous affiliates it (and SGU) has. I was wondering if SGU was considering doing this as well, although SGU wasn't mentioned anywhere in that article.

to my knowledge, SGU does not have any plans for something like that. we have 30 clinical year affiliates (several outside of the US). i hope they dont open a teaching hospital stateside, i think one of the big appeals to SGU is your chance to attend any of the affiliates for a year.

This is common knowledge but because I live in Buffalo I thought I would chime in. We have a HUGE amount of opposition to any type of vet school opening in Buffalo, so much so that I would be surprised if the proposals go through. If anything, it would take a loooong time, and hopefully you will already be in practice by then! We have a high concentration of specialists in this area, and there is concern that a.) The teaching hospital would take a large proportion of cases that would normally be referred to our specialists, and b.) There would not be a large enough caseload at the school because of the specialists (not as big of a concern). Also, I believe the school would be affiliated (however loosely) with Banfield, and without getting into the nitty gritty of corporate vet med I will just say that many here do not look upon that kindly. It might be possible that many Caribbean students could end up at that hypothetical school however, because with plenty of US schools increasing their class sizes, they simply do not have room for Caribbean students in their clinical years.

Just my 2 cents :)

I also got in for January 2014/waitlisted for August! Does anyone know when the deposit deadline is? Is it still April 15 for the January term?

congrats!!!!!!!

turtle research

and best of all - A DVM DEGREE :)

Hi jmo, could you expand on this a little for me? I've done research on tortoise behavior and I would be interested in participating in more turtle/tortoise research. I would even participate before the semester begins, if possible. Who do I contact, etc?

Thanks!:woot:

http://www.oceanspirits.org/ thats the organization website, but they have a partnership with our Exotics and Wildlife Club. Every weekend starting mid march, EWS arranges for groups of 4 students for both nights through the end of the term. Selection is done via lottery system. :)

Thanks!! I would love do to that at some point!!
