Welcome, all January 25, 2008, MCATers!!!!

This is your official place to stress, vent, hang out, party, cry, yell, or whatever else you need to do in the week before and just after your MCAT.

As a reminder, when your test is done, you are welcome to come here and discuss your experience with it. Discussing general passage topics is OK- ie, "I had PS passages on circuits, thermodynamics, and optics." However, you are NOT allowed post specific questions or answer choices from your test. Any posts which contain specific information will be deleted, and a 2-week post hold will be placed on your account. Look here for more information on this.

:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck: to each and every one of you!!!!!!!

Why would you re-take if you scored a 34? To med schools that just looks obnoxious, bordering on obsessive-compulsive / perfectionist...you could've spent the time doing more work involving people and being a human...

I re-took it because my old score was too old for some schools. If you knew me, you'd know that I'm actually the antithesis of obsessive-compulsive/perfectionist; I spent a grand total of 15-20 hours studying for this test (and maybe 70-80 hours studying for the first MCAT that I took).
Also, I thought it couldn't hurt to take the test again because I thought I could score higher. I graduated with a 2.88 GPA (further testament to my non-obsessive/perfectionist nature), so I need anything I can get to make my application better.

Usually, it's helpful to avoid making assumptions before you know all of the information.

January 2008 10 12 Q 12 34Q
Despite my conclusion that I would score around a 30P, I actually ended up nailing my average score on all of the practice tests (my highest was a 36, my lowest was a 32 and then about 5 34s). Very happy with this score considering I never scored above an 11 in PS on the practice tests. Not unhappy, but a bit surprised with my VR score because I was usually around an 11. Just goes to show how accurate the practice exams are at prediction.

Still unemployed though and struggling to find a good job in this godforsaken career market. Any ideas guys??? For now I'll sit down with The Stand and stop to think about my score every other page.

WE'RE GOING TO BE DOCTORS PEOPLE!!!!!

Congratulations to all the other great scores that have been posted (or not posted). Very impressive.

Yeah, my VR score (same as yours) was unusually low too. I was getting 12-13 on all the practice tests and I wasn't really even taking them seriously... I guess that's what happens when you try too hard sometimes (especially on VR).

Job market sucks. I got lucky and found a good research job a couple of years ago (which I still have), but I don't really like it much and I've been applying to other places to no avail. Even with my experience here, I can't even find a job with a lower salary and a lower-grade job title. I'm currently a Research Specialist (at my university, that's one promotion above "Senior Research/Lab Tech", which is the title that I started with 2 years ago), but I can't even manage to get an interview for a Senior Lab Tech job.

Yao Ming out for season? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I knew yesterday was too good to be true! For every few good things that happen (31 MCAT, Rockets 12 game winstreak), there's always one bad thing!

Same here. 34M for the 1/26/08 exam

9VR
12PS
13BS

Are you a non-native English speaker like me? Maybe my spelling was horrible.

Hey Tyronetic, exact same score breakdown as me, except writing. Good job! I'm pretty happy with the score and I hope you are too. What do you think about the 9 in vr though?

Wow, my first post!
I got a 29M. VR-9 BS-10 PS-10.
I'm so excited! Thats not as high as some of you have scored, but I'm extremely happy with that! Congrats everyone!

I hit a 34O 12/12/10

Happy about the verbal score, obviously- that seems to be the hardest to do well on.

WTF 10 IN BIO OMFG- I realized after the test I misread a very very easy discrete- probably cost me a point- I don't think it's worth retaking though

Hopefully I'll be somewhat competitive.

Generally, I believe a total score of 30 with no score lower than an 8 is a strong MCAT score. The average accepted student at a US MD program is 30P. Its really not worth repeating the exam unless you did horribly in one section.

I'm not surprised. I couldn't stablize my VR scores on my practice tests. It went everywhere from a 7 to a 13! I'm happy with it not being a 7. For a combined score of 34, a 9 on VR can still get you into a top school if your other creditials are in good shape

holy ****ing **** i got my score !!!!
35P (10V, 11PS, 14BS)

thank you jesus lord and savior!!!

OMG i have the same score, minus the writing, but i could care less about writing right about now. a:luck::hardy::love::laugh::hardy:

Yea, that's reassuring. I think it's good enough to be competitive at most schools. I know schools like 10 and above, but our other section scores are pretty good.

And seriously, on my last 8 or so practice tests, I never scored below a 10 and probably had an 11 average. Oh well!

Good job Guitarn! You should post in the 30+ thread so you can offer advice to those struggling to break 30.

Yeah, **** the writing. I'm just so psyched that I don't have to take this stupid test ever again. CAN'T WAIT FOR THE BOARDS!

Is it worth retaking the MCAT if you get a low writing score? I got a 30+ score, but an M in writing :-/.

I thought my writing score would be higher but I don't think it counts for much. Just waiting to fill out that AMCAS in June. It's over at last and done for me. Now for the applying stuff. (11V/13PS/13BS Q)

That's a really substantial, rounded improvement. I'm sure med schools are going to be very impressed!

1st time: 25O
2nd time: 22Q (yikes!)
3rd time: 30Q

Hurray! I might actually have a shot after all!

My score for 1/25/08 exam (first and LAST MCAT I'm gonna take):

12PS / 11VR / 14BS for a 37R

Started with a 27 Kaplan practice, but scored 38 and 41 on my last two AAMC practice exams. So I'm not thrilled, but I'm relieved I won't ever need to see this exam again.

Kaplan, btw, didn't really help. I'm thankful for their copious practice material but I saw my biggest gains when I stopped using their test-taking strategies and just focused on nailing the content through Examkracker's books, which are so much easier to read. The main thing is to find out what works for YOU by yourself because someone else's strategies may not work for you, just like clothes that look good on someone won't look good on everyone.

Grumpydoc, could you please post in 30+ thread here? Thanks.
