So we can talk about all things MCAT 2015.
Just registered too!
Just registered too!
Who is good at CARS here?!
Do you read the questions first, the passage first, what is your method!? Did you get better by practicing tons of passages, or were you always decent at verbal? Help meeeee
I read the passage, very carefully and make sure not to rush. I focus on the tone, recurring themes, and strong words of each paragraph (all in an attempt to catch the 'main idea'), highlighting words I believe are strong, or the sentence after words such as "but, however, although"... etc. I also highlight names of people referenced with quotes as usually there is a question about them and what they said and I don't want to waste time trying to find them.
Had work for like 4 straight days after my EK 2.
EK 2 score: 508
I don't remember the breakdown and I don't wanna log in while my work computer but I haven't even been able to review my exam yet.
freakin' 12 hour scribe shifts 🙁
Hey guys.... what are you guys using for practice material? I'm using TPR for all my content review but I have no idea what to practice with since AAMC only released one practice exam. I heard TPR was not at all reflective of the actual MCAT and is way harder than the MCAT. Open to any suggestions.
Just took aamc official practice test.
Phys/Chem 73%
Bio/BC 80%
Cars 66%
Psy/soc 71%
Disappointed in verbal score. Thought the questions weren't that hard maybe that's what made my score suffer. I finished with 10minutes remaining and didn't bother to go back and review. I have done hundreds of passages. On Ek I get mostly 8s and some 9s never double digits. For the 4 tpr hyper learning exams I got 11,10,7,9 also have taken past exams usually get around a 9. I'm an ESL student ugh.
That's a great overall score!!! What did you use to study? If you used Kaplan, did you find the review material useful?Checking in!
Took the test in April, scored in the 80's overall but my CARS section was crap, so I'm retaking June 20th to improve that section.

give myself 8 minutes. only cause the tpr and ek seem to be shorter. Can I ask how much time you're giving yourself per passage? For me, my practice scores shot up when I slowed waaaaaay down b/c I was reading it too fast. I gave myself 8-10 minutes instead of 6-8 minutes.
Second EK test taken. Plan on taking the 3rd next week sometime to hopefully improve more. CARS is just kicking my ass, and I thought this time around I did MUCH better. Anyone care to weigh in? Hope everyone is having a good week!

I scored a 77% on the AAMC FL weeks before I scored in the low 70's on EK FLs 1 and 2. And my average EK CARS score was ~75%, whereas on AAMC material both new and old I was consistently scoring 85%+. So, moral of the story: EK's exams are definitely hard.
Did you take the official guide questions? If you did how did they compare to the practice exam?Just took aamc official practice test.

For physics, honestly I only memorized the big equations therefore on the circuit stuff I was thrown a curve ball. I mean I'm familiar with most of not all the equations. That's easily corrected tho.
Psychology was a pain in the ass causes some of the terms I have never seen (studied from Kaplan) just ridiculous. Finished with like 20 minutes of time remaining.
Bio was cake, but I need to memorize specifics.
Ugh.

How light are we anticipating the physics to be?
http://nextsteptestprep.com/2014/08/21/what-you-actually-need-to-study-for-the-new-mcat/How light are we anticipating the physics to be?
Who who.. Who Who.. I really wanna know..I definitely need to do more passages and learn how to read those graphs :/
Thank you!
Yes, I found their books to be useful! I used their books to review every subject and I thought they were all great, save one. The psych/soc book did not cover all the content in the AAMC guide, so there were a few concepts that I had to research on my own (not a big deal). For the most part, I thought they were great. Also worth noting: I used the Kaplan books from like 2010 to review physics, chem, bio and o-chem. Nothing has changed, so buy the older/used books to save some money.
Thanks for the response!! Yea, I really like their books as well. Did you use their new biochem book as well? If so, do you think if I memorize the heck out of that book, will I be ok for the MCAT or would your recommend taking an actuual biochem course? Also, what were your thoughts on their practice test? I am not doing too great on them (have taken 2 so far)? Thanks again 🙂Thank you!

Yea, I agree about your advise on not memorizing. I guess what I should have asked was do you think it is absolutely imperative to take a biochem class or would thoroughly reviewing the Kaplan biochem book suffice for the MCAT?@loloschicken I did use their biochem book but I thought it went a bit too in depth, to be honest. I spent too much time memorizing details that are beyond the scope of the MCAT. In my opinion, it's much more important to understand general relationships in biochemistry than it is to know minute details. Of course you should know the major players of everything, but anything beyond that I think is wasted time.
Along with that, I would not advise memorizing the heck out of anything because the new MCAT will largely test you on your application of information, not the rote memorization of it.
I have studied exclusively using the EK books which don't have a specific biochem book and I generally do well on the questions tagged "biochem" in practice exams. There are a few things that EK doesn't cover, but it honestly does a great job of the conceptual thought you need to approach problems.
I just did the Biology ones yesterday...not good!!!The official guide questions have me scared 🙁
I have the kaplan book from a friend but haven't looked at it yet. Also have been looking at the khan stuff. Thanks for the tip!You should supplement. May test-taker here, read the EK books front to back ~3 times. Would've been a goner without my biochemistry class slides.
How have you guys and gals been finding your practice full length scores to be? Mine are all over the place, and I am having trouble identifying trends in my mistakes.
Thank you so much for all your advice! One last question. What did you think of the Kaplan practice tests?Kaplan should be sufficient! I took biochem like 4 years ago and honestly repressed most of that semester. Most of MCAT biochem seems to be general biology + exercise physiology, anyway.
Type Date Total Physics Chemistry PC% CARS CARS % Biology B % Psychology P %How have you guys and gals been finding your practice full length scores to be? Mine are all over the place, and I am having trouble identifying trends in my mistakes.
I'll chime in here with my stats thus far. As background, I just completed a rigorous SMP medical curriculum - pretty much the 1st year of med school and covers anything relevant to bio/biochem/chem/physiology on the MCAT. Completed content review and have been doing MCAT passages for about 10 hours a day for the last 2 weeks. June 19th MCAT. Got a 13 in Bio on an mcat 3 years ago but BOMBED verbal. Honestly didn't prepare as well nor have the critical thinking and maturity I have now though so I feel better.
TPR FL 1:
Chem/Physical: 127 - 79.66%
CARS: 126 - 71.7%
BIO: 129 - 84.75%
Psych: 127 - 74.5%
Total: 509
TPR FL 2:
Chem/Physical: 127 - 79.6%
CARS: 124 - 60.38%
BIO: 129 - 88%
Psych: 127 - 72.8%
Total: 507
AAMC Official Guide:
Bio: 76%
Chem/Physical: 80%
Psych: 66.6%
CARS: 86.6%
AAMC Bio Pack 1:
86.6%
AAMC CARS Pack 1:
88.39%
AAMC Chem Pack:
84.17%
And for a fun number, total passage problems done since 5/17 = 1127
Anyway I'm a little weary of CARS. TPR seems much harder to me, and I've struggled with some of their passages. I took the TPR FL 2 today and I thought I did fine then got the 60%. I've recently found a great technique in grammar and rhetoric analysis that has lead me to start really understanding CARS. AAMC CARS seems much easier to me than TPR, and I've been performing much better in the AAMC CARS Pack 2 (not completed). I really hope that these are reflective of the actually MCAT.
Going to take TPR 3 on Tuesday, then finished some hardcore notecards and take the AAMC FL in a week.
Would you mind sharing what is helping you improve your cars score?
How did you do on the aamc official guide and aamc practice test? Also pitching in here, I'll put everything in chronological order. Test date is June 20 Started my prep in the beginning of Feb. using "TPR complete MCAT2015" one big book for content along with taking a full course load with Physics II and Biochem as relevant classes.
First thing I did was an old practice test (AAMC 11) back in January:
PS-9
VR-7
BS-10
26
I could have done much better on PS if I had any Physics II knowledge whatsoever. The VR scared me of course and has been my nemesis ever since.
TPR complete #1 (mid-Feb; a few weeks into content review and my semester):
Phys/chem/BC- 125
CARS-124
Bio/BC-126
Psyc/Soc-125
500
AAMC question packs, all were taken a couple of weeks ago as somewhat of a diagnostic:
Bio volume I: 86% (78sec/question)
Bio volume II: 91% (73 sec/question)
Chemistry: 89% (70 sec/question)
Physics: 82% (85 sec/ question)
Saving the CARS packs for next week after I finish TPRH verbal workbook which I started off averaging ~60% now I'm averaging 70-75% so I'm hoping that means something. I also started off with 7's in EK 101 now I'm getting 8/9's
TPR complete #2 (last week; after completion of content review and semester):
Phys/chem/BC-127
CARS-124 (ughh..)
Bio/BC-128
Psyc/Soc- 126 (needing to touch up on this)
505
I started TPR # 3 a few days ago but it was an awful day after a late night out and I didn't even finish. Anyways I got a 126 on Phys/chem and 123 on CARS.
My friend gave me TBR materials a couple of weeks ago which I just used for passages. Great practice but Idk what to think about how I'm doing. Ive done sections 6-8 of biology (the biochem stuff) and I'm averaging 80% on the dot but I'm taking about a minute and a half per question on average. The funny thing is that while I'm doing them, I feel like I'm failing miserably and expecting a score <70% lol. I'm doing sections 9 & 10 this weekend
I plan on taking one, maybe two EK FL before test day and of course the AAMC FL.
Haven't done the AAMC practice test but I was ~60% on the official guide questions. I didn't include them here because I unwisely took them more as a means to see the new questions than to gauge my knowledge/practice and I was pretty unprepared. I could have certainly done better and don't feel it's indicative of how I'll score on the test as much as everything else so I'm not worried about them. How did you do on the aamc official guide and aamc practice test?
