The Official June 2015 MCAT Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok, so here is what I thought...

P/C: I was dreading this section but it turned out to not be so bad. A bit more physics than I would have thought but nothing crazy.
CARS: As expected, some super boring passages. Plus my tummy was starting to growl a bit at this point, so hard to stay focused.
B/B: Harder than I expected, a few super specific questions on minute details of Biochem.
P/S: This one blew me out of the water! I think I may have done fine on it, but had to guess on way more than I would have liked. Also, for some perspective, I am at the last few hours of my Masters program for a M.S. in Neurobiology & Behavior, so I was hoping this section would be my jam! Used Kaplan, all of the Khan videos, read through TPR's glossary of terms a few times and still saw tons of stuff I was not exposed to.

So happy it is over and done with and I can now go enjoy my summer! I totally feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders after having to worry about studying for it ALL THE TIME. I finally get my life back. Going for a nap then out to dinner some place nice to celebrate! Congrats to those who took it this weekend! Now go relax!

Done.

C/p - I thought it was easier than the practice fl. A lot of easy Chem and physics. I couldn't believe it. I started playing with myself half way thro the section that's how comfortable I was. Jk.

Cars- thought it was harder than aamc, I finished on time but this is my weakest section. I have a feeling I went to fast. A lot of questions had 2 good answers I thought.

Bio- the passages were hard to analyze found myself rereading it multiple times. However the questions were fairly easy. There were several specific questions that I had to guess on. Biochemical and bio are the same thing to me so I can't tell you how the section was divided. Very little organs.

Psychology- was looking for a gun at this point cause I wanted to shoot up the screen. I was expecting an onslaught of terminology like the practice, but there was a lot of expermint based questions. I thought this section was subjective and plain stupid. If I don't get a good score cause the section I'm jumping off a bridge.

p/c- okay.. overall, good.

cars- eh. could have gone both ways. Verbal is a pretty bad section for me anyways so I can't say anything here.

bio- great! not too bad. Hope I did well!

psych- just this... +pissed+impossible. Reading & memorizing a psych/ socio text book couldn't even help you on this version of the exam.

**may the curve be ever in our favor :horns:

How's everyone feeling? For some reason I feel a lot more confident about my score today. Maybe it's the sleep lol

Edit: honestly thinking back I feel like the majority of the cp and bb discrete Qs in particular were really easy.. Like weirdly easy. I'm interested to see what today's people think.

I was kinda freaking out and triple checking a lot of things cause they seemed wayyyy too easy. Psych/Soc was the hardest for me. Probably partly due to being tired, but I swear I have never heard of some of the crap in that section.

Ok for me in terms of difficulty
CARS>Psy>P/C>Bio

I though the verbal were very long and very abstract. Def moree difficult than the pract exam and most of the passages in the CARS packets......🙁( and Psy omg a combination of experimental with verbal 🙁 and P/S mostly chem and like 2-3 physics passages....
Overall I wanted to void but at this point I dont know if Ill ever be fully prepare for this exam...,

Welp. I feel like every section is a big

P/C = As others have said, it was decent but not like a stroll in the park
Cars = Felt like I was flying through it and still almost didn't have enough time. Questions weren't overly in depth, but good gosh the passages were long
Bio = Like chem, was decent. Probably a little better.
Psych = Definitely the easiest one for me, but still had a few questions about random details from theories, people, etc.

Yeah psych definitely intimidated me at first, but I felt pretty confident about my answers by the end after a very long painful process of elimination sweep. I randomly realized earlier that I forgot a negative sign on one problem in c/p :boom:

Yeah I love how on the other sections they emphasize basic concepts and then on psyc they are just like "lets pick a bunch of terms these people have never studied"

NO VASELINE ladies and gentlemen.
P/S: Physics, orgo, biochem, chem, the usual you know. Pretty fair section with some good questions, a few wicked questions not too bad i guess.
Verbal: Definitely longer and harder than what the sh**ty practice test was like. My recommendation, start reading longer passages people.
Bio/Biochem: Another decent section with bio and biochem, the usual, BUT some passages were very detail specific and i was snoozing. Obv it was mostly biochem based but the passages seemed to go on forever! Little to no Anatomy but KNOW THE GODDAM AMINO ACIDS like their your family.
Psych and Sociology: They must have called all the PhD's in America to make this section cause they went in, NO VASELINE! A few passages were nice and legible and understandable but the questions were very convoluted. Not the easiest section to pay attention to after 6 hours of testing. Started to snooze for 30 second intervals to catch my brain from leaving the room.

Overall i hope to get a 505 🙁.
Very demoralizing process to be completely honest.
AND I SPEAK FOR THE MAJORITY OF YOU WHO READ THIS!
Not for the people who are either extremely optimistic, very book smart, or just stupid as F****.
Cheers

BTW i used ExamKrakers manual to study with some supplementing with khan Academy. I felt like i knew all the core topics just fine except psych of course.

P/C=My weakest by far--> probably got a 8ish (old scoring), mainly because I got stuck on a couple of questions and ran out of time.
CARS=I found very fair and much like the AAMC practice. Likely got btwn 10-11
Bio=Very fair as well--> guessing that I got a 10ish
Psych/Soc.=not like the practice test by far...I found myself reading the answers over and over...I got a 48/59 on the practice AAMC so I am thinking around a 44/59 (what ever that would be..like a 10?)

I am just glad to have my life back!! Relaxing in the sun with a nice glass of wine!!!🙂 I will be interested to see how schools will actually interpret these scores??

CP: Chem heavy, would have been easier if it were my strong subject. KA is great prep for it. Predicted score: 127

CARS: Ran out of time with 3Q's left and guessed those. My strongest topic. There were a few spicy nuggets in there, but overall, not bad. Predicted score 129

Bio: Passages were hard. Had to reread them often. Stick to your strategy and you will walk out in one piece. Predicted score: 128

Psych: Well **** you AAMC:diebanana: Wine and dine me the next time you decide to **** me. Predicted score: 124

Total: ~508 +/- 2

Recommendations for study material and tips: AAMC Sample Q's, Practice Packs, KA, and Practice Exam. Most importantly, be well rounded in your subjects. Went in stress free, confident, never lost composure during exam. It just whittles you down. Take your breaks, don't be a trooper. Plan on having ZERO time to review, as it seemed like there was no way to finish all the passages in time. This is coming from a person who would finish practice passages/exams with 5-10min to spare. GL future test takers. And raise your drinks June takers!

Just Finish the MCAT: Pretty similar to FL.
Probably guessing somewhere near 510.

Question: Are we supposed to get an Email after finishing the exam at the testing center or am I just dreaming?

Preachhhh

That psyc breakdown had me rolling. Is that a banana? Lmao

Those Psych answers... I usually finish that section with 30 minutes to spare. I took every last second today. I was rereading things so many times I swear I spent like 15 minutes on one passage 🤣:lame:

I took the exam yesterday and it was significantly harder than the old version I took last fall. However I guess this was expected. I don't think I tanked it but hopefully others suffered on it as I did for sake of possible adjustment(whatever tricky formula they use). That CARS sections is brutal.

I took the MCAT in May, but had to void due to computer issues.

Just came back from the Saturday testing and I just want to die. 🙁

They gave me hard questions that I'm not good at.

C/P: I started out good, then I get hit with every passage that is my weak point. Too many hard chemistry, physics, etc...that I'm not good at. I guessed on too many and my calculations didn't come out right.
CARS: Historically this is my worst section and in the last 3 days I figured out CARS and expect a good score. But I probably did worst then I think.
B/B: Many research question. I think once I settle in it got better, but I still guessed on more than I like. Probably did bad.
P/S: This section is usually my best and I usually finish with 40 minutes to spare, but this is the hardest P/S section I have ever witnessed. There were terms I have never heard of and got hit with dense experiment. In the May exam I literally thought I got a 100% and breeze through the exam like it was nothing. But this June exam I literally guessed on 20 questions.

I think I bombed this exam (except CARS which is usually my worse section). I'm expecting probably 40%.

Do you think they curve based on how people did to similar questions I got or just all the test takers in June? Because my May exam and June exam felt like the difficulty level (especially P/S section) was very different.

I had to score my exam because I can't afford to take another gap year, plus I can't delay app any longer. I also scored because I wanted to know where I stand. If I did bad on the MCAT, along with my crappy GPA 3.5, along with being an ORM, I think my dreams of med school are done. 🙁

I'm going to take couple days off to work on the application, then start restudying because when my scores come back I'm going to be depressed.

Please tell me I'm going to be okay?

On the old test, I'm pretty sure some questions were weighted differently based on difficulty. I'm wondering if the new test will be like this. Anybody know?

Hey no worries! We are in this together and I took the exam yesterday and you aren't wrong it was brutal overall compared to one I have taken before and I have found very few posts of people thinking they just completely destroyed this one. Everything will be cool and if we didn't make what we wanted we can study up and swing again.

As I was doing the MCAT I noticed they gave me two really sharp pencils, thought about ending it right there.

I'm a complete failure. I know so many people are rooting for me and I can't come through. This is depressing.🙁

3.5 is not bad. Today was my 3rd time taking the MCAT. Persistence, my friend. Make your self better with each year that you are not in medical school. If you are willing to drop your dreams of medicine just because of a gap year, well, I don't know what to tell you. I just turned 25 years old. Not getting in last cycle hurt like a mother, but I kicked ass in a graduate program this past year that will most likely convince adcoms of my worthiness. If there are things you are not good at, best believe you can get better at them. Don't just brush it off as a weakness. Remember that there are a lot of people who want to be doctors, and, while many will quit, many will not, despite the adversities that they face. It is up to you - and only you - to determine which group you become a part of.

Hey! Stop that! If it was easy, everybody would do it. Those people will keep rooting for you, and so will I :highfive:

Overall general impressions: very fair and good! my testing center actually had the the power go out during the beginning of the exam! I was kind of freaked out I would have to retake, but we got an extension from Prometric so it all worked out. Also, Prometric was wonderful. They provided everything I ever needed, and were extremely happy and joyous people who made the whole experience so much better.

Chem/Phys-
Definitely my second strongest section. I'd said it was an even mix of Phys and Biochem. I absolutely obliterated the Biochem passages. The passages were very similar to the AAMC, and mixed in a great amount of Gen chem, orgo, and biochem. Very confident about those. The physics passages were uh...50/50. Some of the passages were very easy to understand, but what I was most surprised about is that there were some physics topics I was absolutely not expecting. Not related to the human body at all, and much more representative of the physics question packs. I did a lot of calculations, probably around 10...had a sheet and the back side of scratch paper used up. I probably guessed on straight up 3 questions, narrowed it down to 2 on about 3 more. Finished with about 2 minutes left to check over my answers.
Practice AAMC score:76%
Predicted real sore:129

CARS-
My historically weakest section. I definitely was not "in the zone" for the first passage and it showed. Took too long on that one but I snapped into it after that. Some of the passages were very easy to understand and the answers were clear cut, but some of them were like holy shiz I could choose all four of these answers and they all sound right to me. I found that they were similar in difficulty to the AAMC CARS question packs, definitely harder than the practice test. These passages were LOOOOONG. Took me around 4:30 to reach each one on average (I usually finish reading at 3:45). Overall, I felt as though I understood all the passages, but had to guess on a few. Finished with like a minute left :/ didn't get to check, hope I guessed well!
Practice AAMC score:83%
Predicted real score:126

Bio/BC-
Definitely the best section by far! Some of the FSQs were straight up EASY and the research articles were pretty easy to comprehend. They started me out with definitely the hardest passage as number 1, so I skipped it and answered all the FSQs first, then came back. It was certainly biochem heavy (YAY BIOCHEM 🙂) but you had to understand molecular pretty well too. Knowing straight up how to do research helped so much in this section. The concepts tested were very simple, but interpreting them and understanding the graphs presented in a research article made it harder. Overall, I felt very good (have about 3 years of undergrad molecular research under my belt) and I finished with 20 minutes left to check my answers. Changed a few. What really helped me was highlighting the nitty gritty details of the experiment and really understanding what was the scientific goal of each step of the process.
Practice AAMC score:69% (<-- wasn't ready lol)
Predicted real score: 130

Psyc/Soc-
Yeah...so um. It was definitely presented in the same manner as the AAMC test (setting up experiments, testing hypotheses, etc.) but what the hell there were about 4 terms Ive never seen before. Had to straight up guess. The experimental design was certainly heavier than the AAMC test and TPR tests that I had done, but overall, it was easy to understand everything, If you are a psych major, or have some godsend of a memory that remembers every term ever, you'll be fine. What tricked me up was the tiny details in terms that could drastically affect the outcome of the answer. Felt as though some of the answer choices were ambiguous. Overall, think it went alright though. finished with 15 minutes left to go back and change some answers.
Practice AAMC score:75%
Predicted real score: 127

Difficulty order easiest to hardest: BC-->PC-->CARS/Psych (tie)

JUST SO HAPPY FOR IT TO BE OVER!! We all should be extremely proud of ourselves. We seriously rock. Go enjoy your weekend and kick back. This exam is definitely conquerable. I hope everyone did great 🙂 you rock SDN!

I was a Psych Major, and ummm... yea.. worst section. Lol :bang:

Ran out of time on the physics section because I overestimated how much time I had. Pretty pissed about that. Wanted to void the exam but didn't.
CARS okay was it just me or were these passages like long?
Bio not as bad as I thought. Let's just hope I guessed correctly. A lot of biochem!
Psych: okay what was that? I'm a psychology major and I wanted to poke my eyes out.
Overall: I don't know how I did to be honest. I felt confident at times and at other times I just wanted to throw the computer out the window...there was no window.

Hopefully others found this exam difficult, like I did and that'll affect scoring. Worst comes to worst I'll take it again, I guess, but not letting one bad MCAT stop me from continuing the process!

Just got home from taking it today and looking back, the PSYCH/SOC section was definitely the biggest wtf moment. So much terminology that I've never seen before which sucked because I finally felt like I settled down for the second half of the test.

For the PS section, I felt that I missed some lay ups early because the text anxiety got to me big time. There was so much running through my head (should I wear the headphones, should I not? HOLY CRAP THIS IS THE TEST, etc.) that it took me awhile to finally breath and settle in. By the time I did, the section was over and I had no time to go back and check my answers. There's no doubt I would have been able to correct a few questions.

For CARS the passages for the most part felt so boring and a little longer than practice passages. This is usually my strongest section and I found myself having to retrace sentences because I kept thinking to myself, "wait what did I just read?"

BIO I felt was the most similar to all of the practice exams. Overall, every section accept PSYCH I finished right at the end of the time limit which was way different from me taking the practice tests. For the practice tests I usually finished with at least 10-15 mins to spare to go back and check some of the things I was unsure about

So were the passages actually longer or was it just bigger font? I seriously felt like I was zooming through CARS (rarely lost concentration and understood almost everything the first time I read it) and I was left with like 7 minutes for the last passage.

Definitely longer. Even the answer choices had me double and triple checking because a lot didn't feel like they made sense. I understand the process of elimination but I don't feel like I had enough time to thoroughly read each answer choice.

Well said. I am 33...I know..I am old!..don't feel it🙂 I went back to school at 29 and have a 3.9 honors. This is my second time writing the MCAT (wrote last year) and I feel like I did better just from being beaten by the first one. If I am meant to practice medicine I will...nothing will make me give up (even today's grueling and long test). Everyone keep your head up because you have the rest of your life to achieve your dreams and the world needs us!!

Has aamc released a raw to scaled conversion at all yet

I don't think so, can't find anything with google. I'd really like to see the data from april/may.

I'm curious as to how you all are estimating your scores on each section. Like how many incorrect answers do you suppose corresponds to a 130, for instance? I'd guess like 5

I found this on sdn. Used this in combination with the gold standard scaled scores to estimate...not perfect but something to guess with.

Comment of the year. Rofl

Hmm. I'd guess you could miss about ~3 questions on each section to get a ~520. maybe ~5 questions in each section to get a ~515.
Yea but take in mind the new test seemed considerably more difficult(I have taken the old one) so I don't know how the old test scale works with this also considering the increase in questions per section.

C/P: meh, lots of math
CARS: meh, super long passages, almost didn't finish
Bio: meh, confusing passages but mostly simple questions
Psych: meh, just dumb

Overall: meh, thought it was easier than the April 20 test though

I reduced the raw %s by about 3% to account for that, but my estimate is still probably too harsh. The april/may scores people got in relation to their aamc FL %s would def suggest more leniency. Hopefully we'll be pleasantly surprised

I am just going to leave this here after the test. It should explain it all. Overall all I can say is that I wasn't born mentally challenged, rather I became mentally challenged the day I sat for the exam.

Since ever one else is doing it, I want to get my feelings off my chest too (and vent)!

C/P: Thought this would be one of my weakest sections (71% on practice exam) but overall I wouldn't say it was impossible. SO MUCH MORE MATH than I was expecting. Seriously, I had gotten the impression that it was de-emphasized. Apparently not. That sucked the vast majority of my time

CARS: This has traditionally been what I struggle with the most (did ok on practice exam though: 75%). However, I thought it went really well! I finally understand how much easier it is when you force yourself to get into the passages and "enjoy" them. It must have been the stress that was helping.

Bio: This normally was my strongest section! Did not feel like it, I got screwed up by specific structural questions (SERIOUSLY AAMC?!?!) and some of the experiments were quite convoluted in nature and took a long time to understand.

P/S: WHAT THE HECK. I probably only knew 60% of the terms, but I could at least narrow most questions down to two choices. Other than the sheer amount of terms that need to be memorized, this section should really be renamed CARS 2.0. My mind completely shut down two thirds of the way through and trying to understand the passages became incredibly difficult, with so many different facets, variables, text, theories, experimental designs....

Overall feelings: Poor, especially on P/S but I hope the curve will be in my favor. I also felt there were very specific topics that were picked and came up multiple times in each section. In other words, there wasn't as much variability in the topics/concepts asked as I thought there would be. I'm not sure if that's exactly fair, it rewards people who focused on that but punishes those who haven't. It's a standardized exam so I suppose they have the right to do whatever they want.

For the practice exams: AAMC>EK>>>>>>TPR. Except for P/S. No exam I took was representative of that.

EDIT: I remember a tutor going around and telling people not to worry about content as much. I would say this was not true (for me) because there definitely was a TON of content questions, many of which you had to tie into the experiment. As another poster said, the C/P felt alot like the old exam, with little biology tie in. So don't let anyone tell you not to worry as much about content!!

Now I'm remembering all the statistics they put on psych/soc lol. Having a strong math/stats background actually hurt me I think because each discipline (social science vs math/engineering) uses different terms and methods.

This is gold. Make yourself better each year that you are not in medical school. You are so right my friend.
