Will a late committee letter hurt?

My small school has a significantly higher number of applicants this year, and the committee letter-writer said some of the letters won't be written until mid-late August. Is that considered late, will it affect my application negatively?

yes it will. and there is nothing you can do about it.

It can be a problem, as August is pretty late in the application cycle. If your application is otherwise strong, the effect might be more minimal.
