i am out of state. i see that it costs 67,000 PLUS housing so thinking close to 80,000 per year to go there. does anyone know how easy it is to get colorado residency status as a medical student and how long it takes? also what do you know about this school? i seriously accidently checked colorado on my AMCAS and figured, "why not?" after i got the secondary. now that i have an interview, i am counting the cost and wondering if i would even be able to afford this if i were lucky enough to get admitted.

does anyone know how selective they are for out of state? thanks for your advice.

that is pretty good to get an interview as an out of stater. you must be impressive.
they have a class of around a 130 or so and 85-90% of the class will be from instate. this is most likely due to the fact that most out of state people that get in will choose to go elsewhere because of the cost.
i think they interview like 3/5 of their instate applicants.
but of course there are more out of state applicants than instate.
after you get an interview based on estimated numbers...your chances as an out of stater are ~30%
i dont know if you can get CO residency after a year for being a student. not sure. probably not. but someone else can answer that.

I interviewed at Colorado on the 20th of Sept, and they said it's difficult to establish residency before/during your first year, but all (maybe 99%) of 2nd+ years can become residents pretty easily.

just remember, there is a limit to how much the government can give you in terms of loans (right?) and i'm not sure how much the school will give you directly so while you could go to school for pretty cheap for your second, third and fourth years, that first year could be pretty rough. you're still going to have to be able to come up with that 80 grand.

and yes, i have heard that you can get your residency after one year.

I got my residency in CO after a year as an undergraduate. It's not as big of a deal as in some states, like VT. CO will let you apply the first year you live in the state regardless of whether or not you are attending classes. They want to see some sort of longer termed commitment than just school for the instate residency application, but hey, no one can foretell the future, right? 😉

It is pretty easy to get in-state residency after your first year. I talked with the people at CU and they told me that there is a checklist. Once you have enought marks on the checklist, you qualify.

You need to show some attempt at establishing a life in colorado. For example, if you were to move there a couple weeks before starting school and:

sign a lease/buy property
change over you vehicles plates to colorado plates
get a colorado drivers license
file a tax return to the state of colorado

That would be more than enough to get you residency. Do a google search and you will find a PDF file outlining everything you need to do.

20% of the class is out-of-state, and pretty much everyone becomes a resident after the first school year so you only pay the out-of-state tuition for the first year. Be aware that federal student loans will not completely cover the cost of OOS tuition and you will need to take out other loans to pay for it. If you are interested in the school but don't want to pay OOS tuition, defer for a year and spend a year working in Colorado, thus getting state residency.
