UCSD Class of 2008

They seemed pretty cool (non-fake.) They didn't seem like they were trying to be overly nice but they were approachable. Definately not a bunch of withdrawn antisocials though.

Bottom line though: we're both going to be in the class so it's gonna be badass. 👍

hmmm, nice! good news to hear. i like non-fake people 🙂 and yeah, we're going to have a great class! i can just feel it.... 🙂

I'm a non-fake person! And I definitely need to be part of a super cohesive, friendly, relatively non-competitive class. I just got accepted, but am going to be scratching my head ucsd vs. georgetown for the next few days... any thoughts from you, my brilliant, potential future classmates?

OMG, SD all the way... unless you have an East coast preference, of course.

I've heard Georgetown has some severe problems (ask Jalby.) SD is the place to be!!

go to SD! great program, great free health clinics to volunteer in, and really...our clas can be really great! it's really what we make of it. so if we're friendly from the get-go (email notes to each other, send mass emails out about class outings, etc...), we'll have the environment you're looking for. i would definitely choose UCSD over georgetown. hope to see you here in the fall! good luck in your choices

You forgot the most important part: the beautiful beaches!!

hmm... now, don't get me wrong, I would love to have y'all as classmates; you all seem great. But besides the beautiful beaches (which I will definitely admit to), Georgetown also has a great program, and also provides plenty of opportunities to serve elsewhere, esp. abroad. G-town also seems to do a better job of incorporating the "whole person" aspect into the curriculum. Are you all partial to UCSD (I'm not saying I'm not; I'm in the midst of a big decision) because of its location? B/c of the cost? B/c you truly love all of its aspects? Why IS it that UCSD was ranked so high for primary care on that US News list anyway? None of the students I spoke to on interview day seemed to be able to justify it...?
Am going to send a message to Jalby, thanks alexander and everyone 🙂

Yea, go to G-town, much better opps for you in the long run (based on all the reasons you stated above). SD is way overrated!

As I said in the PM, definately go to UCSD. I wouldn't say that GT has huge problems anymore. I think they got over that storm, but UCSD is a much better school in a ton of ways. UCSD does do a decent job in the whole person thingy with the elective, but I don't think that is a good reason to choose a school. As I've said before, GT's class isn't cohesive at all because of the 150 GEMS students in class with them, the place is extremely run down, they intentionally run thier third years into the ground (of course, UCSD would do that the first two years). Whatever school you go to won't make a difference on the ability to go abroad. Everybody lets you without a problem.

The absolute best thing about UCSD is location. If you go there, you are close to gaurunteed the oportunity to stay in California and near the beach. Whereas if you go to GT, it's going to be harder for you to come back. Alright, I need to get back to studying. Oh yeah, and I would say I'm pretty unbiased on this subject. I don't think anybody has ever told me that I'm partial to either UCSD or GT.

I'm so excited about UCSD med. I can't wait to meet my classmates. There...thoughts for the day.

Hey kids. I'm a third year right now going on fourth year here at UCSD. I saw this thread and almost shat myself.

You kids are going to have a rude awakening here at UCSD. You all seem kind nice and whatsoever, but you are going to be welcomed to the real world. You will complain about thins like "Oooooh...Dr. West is so mean" and whatever. Just wait until you hit the wards. The females will be harassed at the VA. You will sleep less that 4 hours a night on for months at a time. UCSD is not fun, but it will make you into a tough pysician.

If anyone of you want to know the truth, PM me, I will be a MS4 in a few days and would be more than willing to help orient you to San Diego.

I know Jalby has good intentions, but what he's saying about GU is not all true and based mostly on hearsay (i.e., "extremely run down"--I don't think he's ever visited GU to be able to give such an "extreme" description). It's not 150 GEMS, it's ~130 SMP and ~20 GEMS students. Besides, these students only take some first year courses, not all, so what is the problem?

My bad. I totally thought it was 150 Gems, 150 GT students. I would like to retract that then.

How about 350 of them??? I'll dedicate the first ten questions of block number 3 to you.

One good thing about all of the bad stuff that has happened at Drew is that the people who are going to end up there will really fit the mission. I'm hoping you are one of those people.

hey peds. congrats on finishing 3rd year! a job well done, i'm sure, and i'm glad to see you goign into peds. anyway, hopefully what you're saying won't be too true by the time we get to where you are. i heard they're trying to shake things up these past couple of years to make it more "student friendly." 1st years are enjoying it there now, so hopefully our incomign class will have the same experience. i know, it's a lot of hard work, but i think with the right people, we'll get through it with only a few scrapes. i also wonder though that maybe your 3rd year experience is just that - 3rd year. it's a rough time and my med school friend has said similar things as you (little sleep, politics, etc...). i guess we'll never be able to compare though, huh? since it's not like a person can attend two schools at once. but anyway, any advice you have for us incomign first years? in terms of books to buy/not buy and approach to classes? thansk in advance! and UCSD 2008ers - i'm psyched for our class, lets' not let these rumors get us down!

ps - is it still true that 1st year is all pass/fail?

Only the first quarter of the first year is pass/fail

Aralie said:

True but the rest is honors/pass/fail and honors is relatively pointless anyway. It's your clinical grades, board scores, and recommendations that get you into competitive residencies, not your pre-clinical grades.

Hey, if you guys bitch and moan enough and complain to the right people, maybe you can change things. The problem with the older classes is that they (for the most part) don't know what it is like at other schools and are told what they are going through is normal (i.e. being told you have just as many class hours as everybody else)

wuteverz. hard work pays off in the end. if it's tough then it's tough. i would be so much happier to go through hell in med school so to prepare for the future than to breeze thru it and be screwed afterwards. i think we'll have a good time no matter what.

on a side note, looks like housing is gonna be an issue. affiliated housing apartments have waitlists that begin at 6 months! my friend at UCSD med tells me that we should probably look for upperclassmen roommates who have vacancies. but i would rather live with other M1's. wouldn't you agree?

ya housings a biyatch...im going down wednesday to look for stuff....hopefully something will come up......does anyone by any chance know the following......

1. when to send in a physical results
2. also im a bit confused, do we choose our elective courses during orientation?
3. has anyone else gotten any info on orientation beside the date?

im soooooooooooo excited for this year!! i cant wait to meet all of you.....i agree with hoping and akalaka! lets make it damn good year

opps ignore my previous post, i just got an email to get into the website portal, anyone else?

Good call. I'm sure you won't regret it.

Hey hoping2004. I know you were trying to decide where you should live in San Diego. I've concluded you should live in Mira Mesa. I found out the test center for the Step I is right off Mira Mesa Blvd. Just think of the luxury of being able to roll out of bed to take that S.O.B. instead of having to wake up early to drive. 👍

OK, I'm being ridiculous but I've been reading about the Step I and it seems pretty hardcore. Thanks to JB though, I feel like I know what I need to do.

So JB. What do you think you got on it? At least a 250? You're supposed to raise this year's average score at USC by several points all by yourself, remember?

And in your opinion, is the Step I score more significant for getting into a competitive residency than the MCAT is for getting into a competitive med school? I'd guess the answer would be yes since when you're applying to med school, you've got your GPA and extracirriculars which can mean a lot. When applying for residencies though, don't most applicants have similar experiences (what can you really do to set yourself apart from other med students)? Also, what grades are they going to use (I've heard the grades you get during your clinical years.) That leaves the Step I score.

Have you guys checked out the UCSD web-portal website? It has a list of forms we need to have filled out. I'm confused about the Student Health Evaluation form. Do they expect us to bring this to a doctor and have them fill it out for us?

In addition to that form, they want a separate physical exam report taken within the last 6 months. I'm under Kaiser and it's a pain in the ass to schedule an appointment (it can take weeks or even months before you can get in.) What does everyone plan on doing for this?

I think I did good, but I really donno how good. I was lucky on 4.5 of the 6 questions that I remember having to guess on, so that's absolutely great. But I don't really want to givea prediction and be dissappointed.

As for where the board score falls in getting a good residency, it's definately top something. Basically, it is a gatekeeper. If you get a certain score, you will get an interview at a residency. But after that, it's more how well you fit in and who the residency directors think would fit in with the other doctors, do good work and not have other doctors have to clean up for them, etc, etc, etc. But yeah, I definately think you should be reading the USMLE forum right now. I did that before, and it helped me a ton. Basically I planned my entire first two years because of what I read in there.

I think you're referring to the two pages in the health thing? The first page is something you fill out yourself, with the immunizations, but the second page (with the two bodies on it) you need to have filled out by a doctor, as far as I can tell. I'm on Kaiser too, and I got an appointment the next day, but I think it was because my dad is a doctor there 😛 . Anyway, I suggest you call them and let them know you need it done by whatever day you're leaving and that it's for school. When I needed shots for college, they originally gave me a date in October but I told them I would be gone by then and they bumped me up to August. Early in the morning, though.

how many people did you guys invite to the white coat ceremony?

Do you think it has to be a physican (MD or DO) that gives the exam cause my last physical (which I had done about a year ago) was given by a Physician's Assistant.

hoping2004 said:

None so far. Can you believe I might not have anyone there that day? I've got a SMALL family and they might not be able to get the day off work (out of town.) Most of my friends are out of town so they're questionable as well. 😡

Anyone bringing a lot of people to the ceremony? If I end up not having anyone there, let me borrow some of your family, friends, etc.

awww... your family can't get a few hours off for your white coat ceremony? only my family's coming. SD is rather far away for my friends and other family members. i can't believe this is all going to happen so soon. i'm psyched! although, orientation week looks a little long (what are we going to do everyday from 8-5?)

Hi Everyone,

I am going to UCSD in the fall as well and got an e-mail a few days ago about access to the web portal. I think my account deleted it though, so would anyone mind forwarding that to me so I can access all the orientation information too? Thanks

I think that would be ok. It actually has a checkbox for whether the person signing is a doctor or NP. In my experience, a physical less than a year old should be acceptable for school, just bring in the form and ask them to fill it out based on the previous physical. I don't even think you would be covered to have another physical this soon, unless you are 18 months old.

Well, it specifically says within the past 6 months and I'm pretty sure it's been closer to a year. I already got an appointment for tomorrow so I might as well go in.

My feet hurt. I played Dance Dance Revolution for 3 hours straight at the arcade. You should have seen this one kid that was there. Unbelievable. His feet were moving faster than those Riverdance dudes. I got pretty good considering I had only played a game or two before today. I guess I've got a new hobby for the summer.

I like the safety advice the game gives you right before you start: "Don't fall off." OK, thanks. I'll try not to. 🙄

You're my new best friend. 🙂 I'm thinking DDR tournaments every few weeks during med school are in order. I don't know why I find that game so entertaining. I think I played through almost every song during those 3 hours today.

lol. That's what we did in our MDL's during tests. We had like 5 total DDR tournaments. It was great. And lower our test avg, too.

well...i can't bring ddr to sd. it's my brother's game station.. poop. and i had so wanted to be best friends with you 😛

anyway, that game is entertaining and can be a good workout. one of my friends can do two pads at once...craziness i tell you. too bad i have no coordination, too bad.

No problem. I'm gonna buy it. I only have the original playstation (not the PSII) but it should be about the same since the game doesn't really have great graphics. DDR tournaments for everyone!!

So JB. Were you able to "Bust a move" or did you "fall off" like the game suggests not to do. Hehe.

Haha. I can imagine 5-10 people in a 1 bedroom place annoying the hell out of my downstairs neighbor (I live on the 2nd floor.) They'd hate me.

Hey! The kid that was there today was white and he was phenomenal. Besides, DDR is less like dancing and more like aerobics. We should get a DDR trophy that goes to the winner of the tournament. That'd be fun. Each school could have its DDR champ and one day, the DDR champs could face each other in an inter-collegiate battle to the bitter end!

Yeah. Sometimes, I even surprise myself at the ingenius ideas I come up with.

I've ordered DDR for my Playstation and once it gets here, I'm gonna be playing it everyday. I should be pretty good by the time the school year starts. I should have a good shot at becoming the UCSD DDR champ.

What about you hoping? Do you bust a move or fall off?
