(waiting for Jalby comment) 🙂

You are easily becoming one of my least favorite people on this board.

So I would like to know where the source of your info is coming from Alex. For the longest time UCSD has had 100% of the people passing the boards and pre-meds have misinterpreted that to mean they are the top school in avg score. I got my 225 info from a thread (which I showed Eraserhead and he seems never to recall) where a guy swore up and down UCSD had the highest scores in the nation, double checked and found out they were a 225. It would be great if you could e-mail the admin department and ask them Alex, because if this is accurate and they are living up to thier potential of the students, I'm sure they would know the exact number. But simple enough, their curriculum is not set up for learning what is on the boards.

Several current med students mentioned "one standard dev above the mean" and I believe it was either mentioned during revisit day or during my interview (I'm thinking it was during my interview.)

I'm going to go ahead and e-mail them though. I'm really curious to know.

I'd be pretty surprised if it were as low as 225 though considering how high the GPA/MCAT average is for the school (I think it's 3.7+ and close to 32-33).

That guy has the answer to everything! Some might accuse him of being a "know it all" but in his case, he actually does know it all so he gets no complaints from my side. 🙂

Because you always ask me for information and then whine whenever it happens that it or other information I have isn't what you want to hear.

Hey Fellow Classmates

I Got In Today!!! From The A Pool

Im So Excited To Meet All Of You!

Much Luv!!!

Hi everyone, I just received the call from Dr. Rapaport today, and I'm definitely going!

Just a quick question about Financial Aid, I guess I have to submit my fafsa...do I just make a correction to it and add
90. 001317
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-SAN DIEGO

? I already submitted it to UCI, because they told us to, but never added UCSD.

Thanks a lot!

Yeah add that code in and resubmit.

UCSD has alot of other forms too that you can download from your status page.

Hello everyone,
Did any of you do anything special that you think got you off of the waitlist. AS you can tell from my other post in other UCSD forums, I have emailed and sent LOI's to no avail (still no acceptance from the A pool...) I guess at this point i should just hope I'll be added to the summer waitlist.

I wrote a LOIntent 2 months ago, then once I got grades in I wrote another interest letter with an update to what I've been doing. I also tried to e-mail Dr. Rapaport a couple times just so he knew my name, just to ask a question, then see if he got my letter, etc.

CONGRATS MIKE!!welcome to UCSD, we're goign to have a great time!

Thanks hoping! Does everyone know where they're living? I'm thinking I want to get a studio, at least until I can get into the UCSD off-campus thing. I don't mind paying a little more. I've looked around and saw that La Jolla is probably too expensive though, and wouldn't mind a 15-30 minute commute since I'll just try to stay on campus.

Is the financial aid budget flexible so you can include a pricier apartment? Nothing's changed on my status page yet so I don't know where to look for this kind of info.

hey mikey

ya i totally agree im not minding a close commute too, some friends from sd have been telling me good places to look for....so thatll help

Hey everyone, can anyone tell me what their financial aid package is like? Like loans and stuff? My parents still claim me as a dependent, but I've gotten loans the last few years from Berkeley. Just wondering what I can expect. Dr. Rapaport told me it was need-based. What kind of loans do they give? If you're willing to share the info, let me know here or in PM, thanks.

I haven't gotten my financial aid info yet (I'm sure no one else has.) It'll be a little while longer before the numbers come in.

There's always the 38k per year of sub/unsub loans.
In the long run, it's really not that much.
As they're from the gov, they're pretty much a guarantee...

Oh ok, didn't know that. Anyone call for an estimate or something? Dr. Rapaport said I should submit my fafsa then call in a couple weeks.

Mr. Reddly, is the 38k in stafford loans that everyone can get? If so then that'd be good, I'm pretty sure I'll get as little other aid as possible.

Lets see.. I think 8,500 in sub stafford, and 30k in unsub
you have to show financial need, but as far as the gov is concerned, you are an independant. So, as long as your EFC was small, I think you can get all of it (Assuming the school doesn't augment that with better options 😉 ) . I got all of it for Case and my efc was 20k.

Wait... your parents still claim you on their taxes.... No... I think one of the Fin Aid people said that for grad/professional school, you will be considered an independant for grad school aid.

And even if you are considered a dependant, their contribution is soooooo minor as not to matter.... for med school that is.

hey classmates,

i got off the waitlist two weeks ago! 😀 nice to meet y'all. congrats to everyone who got in and best wishes for those who are still waiting. woo hoo!

CONGRATS!!!! welcome to UCSD SOM. we're going to have an awesome class 🙂

Question for you guys: Have you received any info from ucsd med yet? (Financial aid award letter, housing, submitting immunization records, etc.) I haven't received a thing from them since their acceptance package. Just wondering if I'm missing mail or whether they're just slow. l8r.

does anyone know if parking on campus is easy to get?

When I drove there for my interview, there were a lot of spots that required a permit. I don't imagine it would be a problem, they have a big garage.

parking is generally a pain, but doable. it just costs a fair amount (i recall a few hundred a quarter as an employee with the green "B" tag). since classes start early i plan to beat the undergrads to their cheap yellow spaces behind the school. when i was there the gilman garage undergrad and grad spaces were almost always full. parking is not one of ucsd's strengths.

as for the previous poster who inquired about FA and immunizations, i heard it will be by the second week of july that they will let us know.

You guys should be grateful. When I was there (class of 2000), there wasn't even that garage. We only had a few uncovered lots and it was nearly impossible to find a space. Sometimes I would have to drive around for hours just to find a space (and miss class 🙁 ).

could someone who goes to ucsd now please tell me if there are any cell phone companies that don't get good reception there. here at my undergrad school, having cingular SUCKS. there's always "system busy" or "no reception." Anyone know if cingular and T-mobile work well at UCSD and its apartment areas? Which carrier is known for having good service there?
thanks.
Well, how big is your undergrad campus. I would think the larger campuses have great service. I had Cingular there and some places are bad but I'm sure by now, it's all okay.

verizon and sprint are pretty solid... from personal experience. i'm not saying others get crappy reception because i've never had to use them.

Verizon all the way, throughout campus and pretty much all of San Diego.

Don't get AT&T no matter what you do. My friend has that and whenever we talk on the phone, I only hear every 2 out of 3 words she says. Makes for some interesting conversations but can be annoying.

I concur...keep away from att like the plague...horrible, just horrible. Verizon is expensive but good coverage.

yo alex - how much is your verizon plan?

hoping2004 said:

Right now, I'm basically paying $35/month cause I'm sharing minutes but I'm gonna get my own plan so I think it'll probably end up beinhg $40/month or something. I should get more minutes though so it'll work out.

hey, jsut wondering. what was the breakdown of age during the 2nd look? seemed like they were jsut out of college or non-traditional?

Seemed like most were straight out of college. I know there are some non-trads at UCSD med but I didn't see them that day.

did they seem friendly/outgoing enough? or withdrawn?

They seemed pretty cool (non-fake.) They didn't seem like they were trying to be overly nice but they were approachable. Definately not a bunch of withdrawn antisocials though.

Bottom line though: we're both going to be in the class so it's gonna be badass. 👍
