San Francisco You've Got Me--UCSF post Secondary 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
is there anyone else out there that has not heard a single word from UCSF post-interview like me? Sounds like everyone but me has at least gotten some sort of letter from them at this point.

well, i'm in sd and on the HP list and haven't received anything. has anyone been rejected after being put on HP yet? i have a bad feeling now...

yay. got the alternate list mail today too. I'm actually pretty hopeful. Now I know I'm not rejected. I just have to wait!. At least im in somewhere. so for now, just call me a trojan! which is not something id mind at all. 😍

nontrad, you and I are in the same boat! I interviewed late february and have not heard anything...no HP list, waitlist, nothing. I can't figure it out because they obviously have re-reviewed the HP ppl, but it seems they haven't sent us our first review decisions, so I don't know what to think. When they said all the acceptances were gone, I thought I must get either a rejection or waitlist, then when ppl got waitlisted, I thought I must have a rejection, then when ppl got rejected, I didn't know what to think. Maybe you and I can start our own little support group. Anyone else in our same situation?

I am in the same situation. I interviewed late February and have not heard anything. It's so frustrating.

I got the alternate list today as well. I interviewed mid feb. I didn't receive any sort of decision prior to this one (I wasn't on the HP list). I live on the east coast, so that is why I got it after the Cali people.

The letter was dated and postmarked April 23rd.

Got rejected yesterday from UCSF. Letter was postmarked 4/25....I live in SF.

🙁🙁🙁 super bummer, nontrad hopeful. i think i remember reading on the thread that it has been a tough cycle since you had to give up those acceptances last year. i'm a sf nontrad that has been dealing with family issues too, so while i didn't go through the same exact thing, i know it must be really frustrating. i'm holding out hope for you for everything else you're waiting on!! best wishes.

I also received my FA package, via email. The email said that the original paperwork will be handed out at ASW. It isn't the greatest, but it's not bad either.

How do you know if the scholarship was need based or merit? not that it matters, but just curious...

the financial aid package made me kinda sad. Im going to try and apply for outside scholarships...😳

when did you submit your forms? I got my financial package last week and I think my application was complete about a month ago...

LadyDoc2, did you get one? If so, congrats!

Has everyone received financial aid packages yet? I still haven't heard anything...

I dunno. I had this question too when I got my fin aid package. I'm guessing its a little of both need and merit based? I have no clue.

As OOS student the fin aid package was really depressing. I guess we'll have to get our hustle on for some outside free money!

so, you're coming to UCSF 😀

are you eligible to get residency after the first year?

Maybe. I'm still 50-50 but I'm looking for a reason to go. If I can finagle some more money from somewhere soon, then I'm going. I'm really going to need a miracle though...

thanks, phomp. yup, you remembered correctly. definitely tough times.

congrats to all who've gotten in...enjoy a marvelous 4 years in beautiful SF.

I was complete about three weeks ago. Hopefully I'll hear back soon.

I think the Regents scholarship is the only merit-based one. All the others are need-based.

Does anyone have any answers to these questions:

If you are put on the waitlist, what is the probability of eventually being accepted at this? I know they said they usually accept 250 after everyone has been pulled, but does anyone have any idea what the numbers look like now, as far as ppl already accepted vs on waitlist? Also, does UCSF rank their waitlist, and do they let you know if you are near the top, middle, bottom, etc? I think someone brought this up at my interview but i can't remember what the answer was. Out of the ppl who do get pulled off the waitlist, how many are notified shortly after the May 15th date, vs throughout the rest of the summer? And lastly, if they know you don't have much of a chance at being pulled off after the May 15th date, do you think that they'd send you a rejection in May or June or would they really drag it out until school starts?

Wheww! I figured since they are supposedly done with outright acceptances, this information may be helpful for some at this point.

I only found 5 scholarships that I qualified for after a billion pages of google-searching. There just don't seem to be that many scholarships for med school people *sigh*

PS: I'm hoping that our "estimates" are underestimates. Rt now, I don't even care if they give me any more grants or scholarships. I just want them to convert my unsubs. Staffords to some of their institutional subsidized loans!

I gave up on the scholarship search when I realized the few scholarships available for med students are more difficult to get than getting into harvard med.

I got my waitlist letter today, it was post-marked 4/23. Not sure why it took so long.

🙁 Welcome to the alternate list club. It doesn't appear that there are any tiers... I wonder how this will work and if they'll be able to take any of us =/

Still no post HP news for me on the East coast. Not that I'm holding my breath.

well, i guess it's just me and you ooch. i still haven't received anything post HP and i'm in socal.

i called on tuesday and talked to nancy. i asked her what the possible outcomes are for those on the HP list. She said a variety of things. Then she asked me for my info to see if they had my correct mailing address. After that I asked her my original question and she responded with the same response. So i asked her if it was possible for us to get acceptances or is the class already full. She responded by saying she can't give out that kind of information.

So, i'm not sure how people have been finding out stuff from the admissions office because they really don't say much. Oh, and she said to expect something in the mail this week.

I got an alternate letter yesterday. I live in SF and it was dated April 28. So they are still sending those out if you are waiting...

Hi. I've been reading these forums for quite a while and figured now would be a good time to finally post because I got accepted! Due to unusual circumstances UCSF was the only school I had a shot at so I'm super excited! I was on the HP list and just got the acceptance today. The letter in the packet was dated April 29th and I live in Berkeley. So for those of you who haven't heard yet maybe you'll get in too! Good luck to everyone!

CONGRATS peas and sheep! that is awesome news! i am still waiting to hear from them and they said i would be getting mail this week...so hopefully some news will surface for me tomorrow or saturday.

Impressive

Congrats peas and sheeps !! Thats amazing specially since they said there are no more outright acceptances.

Does anyone know how they would let the waitlist people know if they got off the waitlist, email or snailmail ?

Alternate list arrived East Coast, postmarked Apr 28th.

The FA for UCSF isn't stellar, but if it makes any of you feel better....

I just got the FA package for another top school I'm considering, and it included a strongly worded statement saying that I was expected to sell my vehicle if it was worth more than $1000 to pay for medical school. At least we aren't required to live in our parent's basement, but I still thought it was a bit much. I certainly don't drive a Ferrari.

I stalked/harassed/hijacked/kidnapped Dean Wofsy today, and here's the summary:

Dean Wofsy told me that all HP people who haven't received a decision will be put on the alternate list. Based on the records of the past two years, about 50% will be offered a position. The list is not ranked, but after May 15, they will look at the class they have by that point, and waitlist decisions will be made based on personal strengths and how they will enhance the diversity and educational experience of the class further. Most of the movements will happen before July. About LOIs, he said the committee would "like to see people's continuous interest".

Hope that helps.

Thank you so, so much for this information. Hearing that about 50% (even if it's somewhat less this year) will get in is comforting. It's also nice to hear that most of the movement happens before July - right now, it's looking like I'm going to UCSD, which starts around August 25, so I can't stay on the waitlist any longer than that. Fingers crossed...

can i hug you?😍

Does anyone know how they would let the waitlist people know if they got off the waitlist, email or snailmail ?

I called the office and they told me that they notify people who get off the waitlist through US mail.
