Guitarmacy,

"Haven't taken it yet. What score minimum would I need to have a good chance at these schools? 70ish?"

I went UW's PharmD information session. They look favorably on an 80 or higher chemistry PCAT.

Hi! If someone could please give me some insight into my chances, that would be great! Please let me know! And thank you for your time!

You will get interviews for sure. Your application looks great. Dont worry about the history of 2.0. Pharm school like upward gpa trend.

What do you guys think my chances are of getting in to MCPHS?!??!?

Your application sounds good to me. I like the part about going to schools to get kids interested in science.

a. Schools you are applying to: Only to California schools: USC, UCSD, Western, UOP, Touro Northstate, Loma Linda
b. Overall GPA: 3.1
c. Math/Science GPA: 3.0
d. GPA in last one or two school years: 3.0
e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite): None

You might get one or two interviews. You need to either raise your gpa or build up more on your EC activities. A leadership role would also be prefered. Definitely get a 90s on your PCAT and try for a few out of state schools.

Hey guys. If you could tell me what you think my chances are it would help a lot! I am a current UF student who will have a B.S. in Microbiology and Cell Science.

Raise your science/math gpa more if you can. You definitely will get interviews. Aim for a high 80 or 90 on PCAT.

e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite)

Verbal: 95%
Bio: 99%
Reading: 69%
Math: 71%
Chem:97%

Comp:97%

f. Pharmacy experience obtained

My first job out of college was as a pharmacy cashier for 8 months.

Additionally, the following will help us gauge your chances but are more optional:
h. Number of LORs and source of LORs

current LOR's: 4
2 prof's ( though with one im not sure if they're even doing it: all they replied was "Thank you" to the email I sent. I feel guilty about asking busy professors for recommendations. )
2 supervisors/co-workers from the place i'm a volunteer math/chem/bio tutor. They already submitted the letters.

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience

Volunteering as tutor,
Volunteer sender of books to the imprisoned ,
Lifeguarding in college (needed a health department approved certification for this),
Pharmacy cashier,
Cashier/ tag hanger at grocery stores (not mentioned on pharmcas yet)

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality

I'm alittle worried about my personal statement quality. Right now, I'm just sticking to the truth. I want to apply the knowledge I gained in my undergraduate studies. I feel pharmacy would be enjoyable. I like helping people, perhaps from an innate altruistic sense. I like using knowledge to help people. I don't really have many specific stories .

I haven't directly mentioned it but I see getting into pharmacy school as a pathway to a job.

My reasons of liking to help people might seem like a mediocre reason to apply. Maybe my statement so far seems vague? Maybe my comparsion between being a pharmacy cashier and how being the pharmacist seems better in every way seems silly and should not be mentioned?

Your gpa is not great but good job on the PCAT. I think you need to get better LORs. Definitely need more EC especially community services or pharmacy related clinics. If your reason to pursue pharmacy is to help people, you need to show some solid evidences. Are you involve in any volunteering clubs or community projects? If not, start now.

Check with schools on course requirement (your speech course)

You will get interviews for sure. Your application looks great. Dont worry about the history of 2.0. Pharm school like upward gpa trend.

Hi! Thanks kcwang! But um.... I didn't have a history of 2.0! LOL! Are you still responding to my WAMCs!? LOL. Or are you confusing mines with someone else's??

But thanks for your time!

Hi! Thanks kcwang! But um.... I didn't have a history of 2.0! LOL! Are you still responding to my WAMCs!? LOL. Or are you confusing mines with someone else's??

But thanks for your time!

Oh LoL Sorry!! Then you have a good application then!

Thanks for your reply!

Yea, my GPA is not great. I should've switched colleges or something because a B average just doesn't seem to cut it.

Hopefully my recent upward trend to an A+ GPA will count for something? I guess there isn't much I can do about those B's I got when I was 19.

Fortunately, my PCAT turned out really high. I was definately surprised! My housemates of the time didn't like how I seemed to be studying all the time for the PCAT so they threw some kind of drug party the night before the test. Some smoke came into my room and knocked me out for 3 hours. Then, I didn't really sleep the rest of the night. I was in a terrible state for the test. I thought I bombed the test, especially the reading comprehension. The next days and weeks the place i was staying at became full of drugsmoke. So, I moved out and never recieved my PCAT score.

Then, the next year or so on a whim I found this surprising score. It made me wonder if pharmacy school was a possibility.

Right now, im just a volunteer tutor for homeless college students.

Just yesterday I got a required immunization so I could volunteer at a hospital. So far, ive only to completed pre-volunteering meetings, so i dont know if I can put that on my application.

Improving my LOR's might be an issue. My 2 prof LOR's have still not been completed.

I was recently talking to someone accepted to UW. They had a 3.4 GPA and 91 PCAT.

I definately need to find a school that value's PCAT and not grades. My grades are "not great.", even after taking three quarters of prerequisite classes with straight A's.
I wish at least one school would advertise they are looking for people with high PCAT's and ~3.0 GPA's 🙂

Hey kcwang, were you maybe referring to my application? I had the history of 2.0. If it wasn't referring to mine I definitely would like your opinion or suggestions. 🙂

Hey Guitarmacy, I believe I was refering to your application. Your GPA is pretty good now, so I wouldnt worry much about it. Aim for a high 70 PCAT (it is not that hard, it is all about test taking skill). I would advise you to try the practice tests from pearson first to get a feel for your weak point on the subjects.

I really like how you started a pre pharm club at your university. Great leadership experience! Together with your other EC, I think you have more EC than most average applicants.

As for LOR check this link out http://pharmdadmissions.ucsf.edu/200...on-really.html

For interviews, get as much mock interviews as you can. Even video tape it.

IMO, You have a great application

Hey jamesmmw,
Upward trend of GPA will help. Most cop adcom just want to make sure you can survive pharmacy school. If someone points out your gpa during your interview, you can immediately refer to your PCAT score and upward trend of your GPA.

Even if it's a pre pharmacy meeting, you can put it down too. Did you help set up the meeting? Give speech and talk? Lead the discussion? If not, start doing so. You want to be able to talk about this experience if it comes up at your interview.

For LOR, just kindly remind them every week. You might feel like you are bothering him, but you have to get them on it asap. Tell them a deadline (like a wk before the actual deadline you want) that you must have it done. You can also visit your professor and talk about your resume and EC to help him get started.

I think a lot of school are looking for an overall nice package. If you have low gpa, just make it up with other parts of your application.

I had 3.0 gpa when I applied, but I had great records of EC. My LORs came from professor and pharmacist who have known me for years personally. My PCAT scores in the high 80s. I had 2 majors and 2 minors with upward trend of gpa, which I was able to convince the adcom that I am prepared to tackle sop's curriculum.

Keep up with your current activities and Good Luck!

A. UAMS (early decision)

B. Overall GPA 3.55

C. Math/ science 3.58

E. Plan on taking September PCAT

F. Experience- Registered with state board as a pharmacy tech but have not been able to find employment, volunteered 2 years in an ambulatory surgery center

G.Will submit PharmCAS within the month

H. LORS: 3 - Organic Chemistry I Professor, Anatomy Professor, Neighbor/High School Principal

last year i retook 3 courses and got my pathetic gpa to 2.6. coupled with my 94 pcat score surprisingly enough there was some interest in me from schools. There was one in Tennessee in particular that was trying to get me in for an interview, provided i could take 4 classes by mid june as they had originally been taken more than 5 years in the past.

since this request from an admissions officer was made in late april, there was no school that offered courses that started that late. as a result the admissions officer told me he would put me on some internal list for this upcoming cycle and advised me to retake any science courses that I took 7 years ago or later (this is a total of 7 classes now)

my question is as follows:

i currently am about to finish 2 summer semester courses (both A's) and will be on the Dean's list. my question is - should I apply early with the dean's list designation for Summer and show the remaining 5 courses as "pending" and update them as I go along, or wait until the end of Fall semester, finish 3 of the remaining 5 courses (with Dean's list designation) but apply to less schools as certain deadlines are in nov/dec??

I know schools will look more favorably upon back to back Dean's List designations while working full time, but I was curious what would be in my best interest.

apply to more schools with 1 semester of dean's list designation OR
apply to less schools while having 2 semesters of dean's list designation?

one might ask isn't it presumptuous for a guy with a 2.6 to project B2B dean's list designations? Well I'm a different guy from the old 2.6. I've matured (3 courses I took last year - 2A/1B).

any help/guidance on this is greatly appreciated. thank you in advance for your time.

f. Pharmacy experience obtained
Certified Pharmacy Technician - 1 year volunteer experience at my undergraduate institution's university hospital pharmacy
g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary)
Have not submitted yet. Intend to submit by August, but not for early admission.
h. Number of LORs and source of LORs

Executive Planning Committee Chair for Take Back the Night, an event that raises awareness for sexual assault

j. Self-perception of interview skills
I think I'm pretty personable, and I've done some research. I still hope to prepare more. I would venture that I'm, at the least, decent in interviews.
k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
While my personal statement is unfinished at the moment, I have quite the cadre of editors.

Other notes:
I didn't take my undergraduate years very seriously at first. I graduated with a BS in Biochemistry and a music minor from a top 25 university, but I didn't do well academically. My GPA from my undergraduate institution was a 2.34 with 155 GPA units. I began as an engineer, but after a few internships, I found that it wasn't for me. I didn't do well in my Biochemistry classes -- lots of C-'s, and now I've retaken the classes that I got C-'s in (Gen Chem 2, OChem 1 and 2, Bio 2) at community colleges in my area and have (easily) gotten all A's since repeating them. I'm hoping that my research experience, my pharmacy volunteer experience, my PCAT, and my personal statement will be able to mitigate my poor GPA (somewhat).

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks for your time!

Hey guys,

Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks! 🙂

Schools applying to: south Carolina college of Pharmacy (early decision)

Overall GPA: 3.68

PCAT: scheduled in July, aiming for a comp 60+

LORs: 2 chem professors, 1 pharmacist (employer, should be very strong)

Personal statement: strong to very strong

EC/honors: 1 year experience in a retail pharm, pre pharmacy club, SNPhA, Dean's list fall/spring semester

I'm applying after 1 year of pre-pharmacy. Thanks for all the help!

Very interesting case you got there. I almost have the exact same numbers. 3.68 pre-pharm GPA and 69 on PCAT. Although I do have a BS, MS, 3 years of clinical research experience and 2 years of pharmacy volunteer experience w/ pharm tech certified, I would think they are secondaries to the GPA and PCAT.

I just finished applying for early decision at Texas Tech and am waiting for pharmCAS to mail out the application (supposed to be sometime in early August).

Please update us on your status later 🙂

I say apply early and list those classes as pending. Some schools might grant you interviews right away, while others might put you "on hold" for fall grades if they feel your current gpa is not good enough. Then you can always update them with fall grades. So this way you won't have to limit your number of schools you want to apply to. Goodlluck!

Yea I'm instate, and I know they give preference to instate. Are you applying to MUSC or USC campus?

I transferred from a community college to a university the spring semester of my junior year - so right now, I finished my first semester at the university and got a 3.1 gpa with a whole bunch of B's (Most of my classes[even electives] were 300-level courses). But I was working 30 hours a week (2 jobs) and also volunteering once a month, so my weekends were basically me working - very little time for homework. The fall semester of my junior year (at the community college), I withdrew physics but only because I learned that it wouldn't transfer to the university - so I was taking three classes and got two A's and one B. I recognize that this is a downward trend. Thank you in advance for looking at my description.
a. Schools you are applying to
VCU/MCV (possibly early decision), Maryland, Shenandoah, Howard, Pittsburgh, UNC (maybe?)
b. Overall GPA
About 3.5
c. Math/Science GPA
I would guess around 3.3
d. GPA in last one or two school years
I got a 3.1 gpa this semester, but a year ago I got straight A's, one of the classes being Organic Chem. II
e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite)
I've taken the PCAT twice, both times without studying much. The second time I got a 56 composite. I am going to take the PCAT in July and shoot for a high score.
f. Pharmacy experience obtained
I've been working at a pharmacy since January.
g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary)
Probably late August if I'm doing early decision. I am taking 2 summer classes.

Additionally, the following will help us gauge your chances but are more optional:
h. Number of LORs and source of LORs
I can get a great one from my pharmacy manager, a great one from my Domino's manager (VCU requires one from an employer), but I still have to find a professor who will give me a decent recommendation since I am new to the University.
i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience
I worked three summers during construction when I was young (15 years old) and saved enough money to buy my own car when I was 18. I've worked at Domino's for 3 and a half years, half of it as a shift runner. I've been part of the Biology club and Phi Theta Kappa at my community college, though I only attended meetings during my short time with Phi Theta Kappa. I am a member of the Pre-Pharmacy club at my University and I've attended most meetings. I have been volunteering at an apothecary museum as a tour guide since January, once a month. I am currently volunteering at a hospital ED 4 hours a week
j. Self-perception of interview skills
Above Average
k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
I haven't written it yet, but I will include how working full time at construction sites when I was 15 years old gave me the hard work ethic that I show today working 30 hours a week to help my parents pay expenses. I know I have a downward trend in my grades, but my hours for work also increased this semester and my weekends were literally booked. I think I can make a good personal statement out of this. I know people are going to say that I have to cut my work hours for a bit, but I can't. I have to raise money in order to ultimately be able to go to the university I go to.

Yea I'm instate, and I know they give preference to instate. Are you applying to MUSC or USC campus?

I want to apply to usc if i dont get accepted to texas tech. Since i decided to go with early decision i am only allowed to apply to one school until i am accepted ot rejected. (obvious i would go to texas tech if accepted).

I think in attempting to de-stress myself about the PCAT I'm taking next week, I'd like someone to give me an opinion about what my chances are. UF is without a doubt my top-choice school.

a. Schools you are applying to: University of Florida, University of Tennessee, Nova Southeastern, University of Illinois - Chicago, and maybe UNC-CH.
b. Overall GPA: 3.64
c. Math/Science GPA: 3.599
d. GPA in last one or two school years: 3.805 this past year.
The average science GPA for the admitted fall 2011 class was a 3.44; the range was approximately 3.0 to 4.0.
e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite): Taking next week! :scared:
The average PCAT score for the admitted fall 2011 class was at the 83rd percentile and ranged from about the 60th to 99th percentile on the composite score.

f. Pharmacy experience obtained: Volunteering, shadowing, and pharmacy-related research
Although pharmacy experience is not a requirement for admission, it is strongly recommended.
g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary): Not submitted yet, but planning on finishing up before the summer is through.
h. Number of LORs and source of LORs:
Three.
1. PI from research internship, who is a pharmD
2. Micro professor, whose class I got an A in.
3. Anatomy professor and advisor, whose class I also got an A in.

The Admissions Committee prefers letters from (1) a pharmacist and (2) a science professor
i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience: Been a volunteer at a local children's hospital for three years now, and I am the volunteer coordinator for my school.
j. Self-perception of interview skills Not awful but by no means stellar.
k. Overall impression of personal statement quality: Yet to be written, but I am afraid of having a cookie-cutter answer...so I'm trying to think of something to say that will help me seem genuine but stand out.
The personal profile reveals your thoughts about your strengths as a person as well as areas of personal development you believe you need to improve. The essays communicate your motivation, goals, circumstances, and experiences related to a pharmacy career. Students should focus on providing complete and in-depth information in response to the questions and essay topics in PharmCAS and the supplemental UF College of Pharmacy online forms.

Here is some info from the UF website that may help you see if you are competitive enough or what you need to work on/towards.

I think you are on your way, but make sure you score around or above the 83rd percentile on the PCAT.

I'm still young (going to be a junior in high school) but I've been interested in becoming a pharmacist for a few years now and since I'm down to the second half of high school I have been doing some research. There are not many schools around where I live that offer a pharmacy program and I didn't want to go too terribly far away, but I could adjust. I was really hoping to get into the 0+6 year program at STLCOP. I have a 3.75 GPA and got a 25 on my ACT (hopefully will improve, have only taken it once.) When I look at requirements it has 'AP this' 'Advanced this' my school is just little and doesn't offer AP/Advanced classes, hardly even any college classes, so it makes me pretty worried. If my school did have them I would definitely be in them. I am in the top 5% of my class, in NHS, and in FCCLA (pretty much the only organizations we have) I was just wondering what you guys think my chances are at getting into STLCOP or any other 0+6 year school? Suggestions? Or would it be better to go 2 years and then transfer?

a. Schools you are applying to: Albany (early decision)
b. Overall GPA: had 2.5.... been taking multiple classes and boost it up to a 2.9 (even with a bunch of A's in science classes)

e. Complete PCAT scores (or just composite): in 2010: 46%🙁, and planning on taking in Sept
f. Pharmacy experience obtained: 2 years of volunteering work at a hospital,

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary)

Additionally, the following will help us gauge your chances but are more optional:

h. Number of LORs and source of LORs: 4 letters, from 2 professors, 2 pharmacists
i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience: tutor for 6 years, and currently helping with community work besides working in the hospital
j. Self-perception of interview skills: I think i would be okay if there are not many people present
k. Overall impression of personal statement quality: VERY GOOD!🙂

Let me know what you think, I've been working so hard for this since i've last applied...

Contact STLCOP and speak with them about your issue and see what they have to say. I would then still apply to their program, so you can get some experience applying to a program. If that does not work out go for the 2 and transfer idea.

I disagree. I don't think admissions officers will look at the opthalmology research experience and then question the person's desire to pursue pharmacy. Research experience is just taken as research experience. If it happens to relate to pharmacy, more power to it. But if it doesn't, it will not hurt the applicant.

UCSD looks favorably on research. It will help.
I was wondering, would you mind sharing your statistics (GPA, PCAT, work experience) since you mentioned you got an interview with UMD? I'm really hoping to get into that school and would really appreciate some insight. Thanks!

I took the test on the 18th, not sure if I should retake the test in September.
GPA is 2.79

Verbal 416 - 74
Biology 424 - 82
Reading 400 - 51
Math 407 - 61
Chemistry 426 - 85
Composite 415 - 78

What do you guys think? And what schools would I stand a chance if I applied? (I've also done research and over 400 hours volunteering in a hospital pharmacy.)

In advance, sorry for the long post. I am entering my senior year at a very competitive, highly ranked liberal arts school, and I am majoring in Biochemistry and Biology. I am one of only a handful of science majors at my school who is not planning on pursing either a PhD or an MD. I have two years of synthetic organic chemistry research, and I spent a month as a full time unpaid employee in a local pharmacy. I am also a private biology and chemistry tutor at my college, and I volunteer twice a week at a local middle school near where I go to school. I just took the PCAT yesterday and these are my stats from the preliminary report:

Verbal: 443 -96%
Biology: 455- 99%
RC: 431- 94%
QA: 416- 77% (stupid time limit...)
Chem: 449: 97%
Comp: 439: 98%

I have a prepharmacy GPA of between 3.74 and 3.85 depending on the school. My math/science GPA is 3.75, and my GPA in my last two years of school is a 3.87. My cumulative GPA from my primary college is 3.66, and 4.0 from a local college where I took A&P, Logic and Public Speaking last summer. I am applying to the following schools.

UCSF
UCSD
U. Washington
Washington State U.
Ohio State
UNC

I have four letters of recommendation. One is from a rhetoric professor that I have a really good relationship with, one is from my Biology major advisor and former professor, one is from my PI in my research lab and one is from a manager of retail pharmacies, who was my coordinator for my volunteering experience.

I am totally comfortable with interviews. I interviewed many times during my undergraduate college search, and I feel that I have an excellent demeanor with professionals and professors.

I am confident I have a solid application, but I can't help but feel nervous when I look at the percentages of admittance at most of my schools. I am not sure if it is unwise to apply pretty exclusively to extremely competitive programs. I have worked very hard as an undergraduate and my family has paid a staggering amount of money for me to go to such an amazing college, and I want to make sure I make the most of it by going to the best possible pharmacy school. Thanks for any advice or opinions.

This was my second attempt from yesterday. My first attempt was 2 years ago and my comp was 56. My bio, quant, and chem section improved significantly, but my verbal and rc scores dropped.

f. Pharmacy experience obtained None as of right now. However, I will be starting a certified pharmacy technician job 2 weeks from now. (Should I add this to pharmcas?)

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary) Plan to e-submit before August 1st.

h. Number of LORs and source of LORs 3 - 2 from Chemistry professors and 1 from faculty advisor.

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience. No volunteer experience. I helped out at my family's restaurant for about 2 years and I was an office intern for a few months during high school. (Should I put either of these on pharmcas? I know both are not by any means spectacular but, I have absolutely no actual work experience or ECs. I don't want the admission committees to think I haven't done anything if I leave the work experience section blank.

j. Self-perception of interview skills Average

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality Haven't started it yet, but will try to make it above average.

Also, I have one publication in a scientific peer-reviewed journal.

So, what are my chances? I highly appreciate any feedback!!

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience
None
j. Self-perception of interview skills

I'm thinking that the upward trend in GPA will look decent. It shows that I'm able to maintain a high standard when I'm working as well, even if I didn't do that and had a little too much fun (translates to too many B's) my first few semesters. I believe my LoRs will be fairly positive as well.

Before entering pharmacy school, I'll be graduating with a major in Biochemistry.

How about a lack of volunteer experience, though? How might that be viewed? When I decided that I wanted to go to pharmacy school, I focused on pulling up my GPA and finding a technician job, rather than volunteering and other things.

Oh, and on another note - the school I'm really banking on being accepted at is UMKC. If anyone could provide some insight into what they specifically might think of my application, it'd be much appreciated.
