drpduck,
I'm in the same boat.
I actually have a lower GPA than you but I'm hagging around SDN. Also Yah-E the CEO of the under 3.0 club has an undergrad GPA of around 2.4 which is lower than mine and yours but that didn't stop him from getting into dental school. Hang in there.

blankguy thanks for the encouragement. I guess it can get pretty upsetting when all these people have better stats then me. Oh well, hopefully I'll rock out the DAT's. If not, I'll just apply again.........I really want to go to dental school, and honestly getting rejected wouldn't stop me.

Don't fall into that pit. They earned it. This is about each one of us as individuals not about how we compare to the others.

If any of you took POST BACCALAUREATE, please include that as well.

don't let anything or anyone intimidate you. sure your gpa matters but your admission doesn't solely depend on that.

keep your head up and just prepare well for the cycle. read that "under 3.00 club" thread and you'l see that there have been afew that got in with gpa's like yours and mine.

good luck

I might add that I had one admissions officer tell me that they stress the most recent work.

Jaeden, your scores are awesome

BUt, the GPA, it's good to try for Calgary and UBC and a few others but I think you would have a better chance getting into a US school than a Canadian school because of your GPA.

Thanks :)

Well I wasn't overly concerned about my gpa... maybe I should be :p

I know my transcripts look a lot better, the last two years of my degree I have like a 3.75. Oh well not much I can do about it now anyways.

Oh that makes all the difference, some schools drop your worst year. Then you now went from a mediocre chance to a good chance just based on those two sentences.

You forgot to add that it makes getting accepted alot easier when you're an Arab who straps bombs to his chest and threatens adcoms that he will 'blow up' if they don't accept him.

Hopefully I don't get banned for that one...if so...oh well. See ya suckers!

Mo, ignore that idiot. By the way where is Dr. Mom when we need her to be monitoring the board?

Where are you Dr. Mom?

No name calling their bud. I was almost banned for that once. There are posters on here that have an uncanny influence on who gets banned and who doesn't. My advice is to watch what you say.

"bump" refers to bumping up a thread so that it's at the top of the forum.

yeah. I remember from somewhere that it stands for: Bring Up My Post ("BUMP"). Is this right? I have no idea where I got this from....

Hey Biogirl your stats are great. You know what I was thinking that you are from U of M but You are Spartan. Anyway E. Lansing is a town that is hard to leave also. I lived in E.Lansing fro about 4 years and went to LCC for first two years of my school and then Went to Michigan. Most my frinds went to MSU and they call me trader bcz i lived in E.Lansing and went to Michigan. Good luck with your application. I am also applying to Michigan next year as you know. I have no idea right now what I am goona do in next year. I thought my first choice was Temple but as I keep on doing research about schools I am not sure anymore.

My stats may look good but had some problem in my junior year and hope that adcoms overlook that. I am very happy with my stats. Also about my choices I don't know which one is firts or second. I like to go to temple bcz is near by where I work now, Michigan my undergrad school and Nova the weather and students seem nice and may be I am tired of cold now. Don't know yet but will see.

I have to believe that most people in their quest for education excellence have stumbled along the "bad semester". For me it was 1 semester that I wish I could have all over again, but redemtion is gone and now any bad marks show like scarlett letters. However, it is nice to know that ADCOM's and the profession of dentristry look upon what every individual may bring to the profession and judge that person by parameters far greater than GRADES. From hanging around these forums I have seen that people get into dental school with GPA's from 2.8 to 4.0 and DAT scores of 15 to 30. So, I have come to the conclusion that if you make yourself as well rounded as you can (Volunteer, Work in Field, Shadow, Research, Grades, DAT) and then sell yourself by letting the adcoms know that you have DRIVE, then you have a shot just as good as anyone, regardless of other peoples scores. Don't let other peoples marks scar you from yours, you have finished your sciences , you put up a good DAT, and you have something to offer in the field of dentistry. DRIVE got you through the sciences and DAT, lets see it get you through the door!

Good luck 2005 and don't let yourself deflate your achievements

BillE

Tip to 2005 applicants....APPLY EARLY. =)

I think the cycle starts May 15? 17?....send in your application the day after!! LOL, OK, you guys don't have to rush that much, but get it in no later than say the middle of June if you want to be worry-free after December 1 when the earliest acceptances start to roll in.

I remember when I applied, my friends had already been accepted and had sent in both their deposits even before I submitted my online AADSAS application. :(

My first two years were rough but I earned a 3.88 since then including all upper level science courses. I'm also a bit worried about the 4 W's on my record. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Don't sweat the w's! Unless they are within recent quarters in required predent classes. Your DAT is outstanding! Your BCP is noteworthy. I feel that BCP is more important or equally important as sci-gpa because it is based on course that you will encounter in D-school. Since you seem to have had a much higher level of achivement in recent years with 3.9 upper division GPA, I think you low then average overall GPA will be less relevant in evaluating you.

You should be a pretty successful applicant.

i dont plan on taking the dat till august, can i apply in june without the dat scores coming till much later???

Yes you can...but your app will be put on hold by all of the dental schools until they recieve your scores. Remember that applying early is very advantagous. Some schools start interviewing already in August.

most of the time, the sch accepts a fax copy that they print out for u after ur exam.
(check with the schools of your choice.)
This means they will complete ur file right after u finish DAT.
But the score better matches what will be sent thru Prometric Center.

Research experience during this summer probably will make your application more attractive. It is not a Must, but almost all my interviewers like to listen to what kinda research I do. I think your stats is fine. As long as you finish strong this semester and fall semester, you shouldnt have much problems to get interviews. Then it is another ball game. Stick with us. When the time comes, feel free to ask questions. It is a long learning process, but it is quite worthy at the end.

What do you think my chances are w/ these stats? My transcript is full of mistakes and I've pretty much spent all of this past year trying to correct them.

Improve your DAT score a bit, and you should have:

- a very good shot at UMich, UDM, and Case,

- a reasonable chance at Indiana,

- and at the very least be considered at OSU (which gives preference to Ohio residents) and Marquette (does not interview out-of-staters).

Good luck!

Your weakest point would be your DAT, As UbTomm mentioned. There are many things you can do to improve it, browse the DAT forum to get some feedback from earlier applicants. Shout at 17 PAT and you'll be ok.

Undergrad Ed: Michigan State University
Cumulative Undergrad. GPA: 3.8
Science Undergrad. GPA: 3.8

1st DAT: Academic, Science, PAT 21/20/17

Extracurricular/Research Activities: some volunteering, some IM sports, shadowing, dental assistant, pre-dental club, hall government. participated in various research projects as a subject.

Schools Applied: Michigan, UDM, Case, Marquette

AADSAS Submitted Date: May 19

Schools Received AADSAS Date: (approximate date) June 10

Interview Invites: Case, Marquette, Michigan, UDM (in that order)

Waitlisted: After being "on hold" until March, Marquette wanted $750 to be on their alternate list... I did not send it in, however they also have not sent me a rejection.

Accepted: Case (+10,000/yr), UDM, Michigan

Attending: Michigan, but it was a tough choice between them and Case especially with the scholarship offer from Case.

Go for it! If they don't interview anybody at all, you got nothing to lose.

I was sure they don't interview out-of-staters (which is true), but I wasn't sure they interview in-staters or not.

Well, now I know, thanks to you. :D
