Science Undergrad. GPA: 3.2

1st DAT: Academic 18, Science 19, PAT 14
2nd DAT: will retake in June

Schools Applied: UMich, Detroit Mercy, Case Western, OSU, Indiana, Marquette (may add more schools later)

What do you think my chances are w/ these stats? My transcript is full of mistakes and I've pretty much spent all of this past year trying to correct them.

I know that UDM asks at least 18 in every section except for QR. They stressed me about an 18 in RC. An 18 AA may cut it, I dont know. However, you have plenty of time to improve your DAT.

Soooo ... most of you are graduating seniors right? spring '05 right?

Just submitted my AADSAS! It is relieving and terrifying at the same time. Would anybody mind looking at my stats and giving their input. Thanks.

Hi edknarf,
i might retake your DAT if you r serious about penn, harvard and uconn, etc. You should definitely get some research experience as well.

hahahahahhaha LOL

is he for real? are you sure this isn't a satirical post making fun of people that come on here acting like they are worried about their obviously good stats?

i especially like the part about getting a 27 because of not feeling well. i almost (not quite) feel bad for the guy (assuming he wasn't joking/lying) because it is apparent he has some *major* insecurity issues. plus, he spent 160 bucks and lots of wasted time retaking the dat. still, i have to agree with you that i hate it when people with 3.7 + and 23+AA come on here acting like they are scared of not getting in. please

p.s. notice this "genious" spelled 'honors' wrong 🙄

that post is idiotic as it can get. no question that it was intended as a joke.

uhh, ok.

And no, I won't ask why. 😉

Of course I was joking guys. Its just that people like this ask the stupid question ?do I have a chance? or ?should I retake the DAT? and that pisses me off.

SO, PLEASE DO NOT ASK IF YOU?LL GET AN ACCEPTANCE IF YOUR GPA IS OVER 3.7 AND DAT OVER 21

PS:
I wish I were that smart though 🙄

I totally agree with you there, Dr_Oh. I have good GPA but not so good DATs which actually I'm too embarrassed to post, and it really does get me a little sore when someone like that comes in here and asks whether they have a chance.

Seemed like a couple of ppl were confused about whether the extreme example was a joke; that's the only reason I commented on it. It took me a while, though, to think it through and arrive at the conclusion that there just aren't that many hours in 19 years!

Obviously, my DAT is nothing to brag about. I took it to early. My 1st choice is UNC (being a NC resident), but VCU or Meharry would be great. I am dedicated to becoming a dentist!!! :luck: Good luck everyone, I look forward to posting again.

i don't know if this is another post thats meant to be a joke or not.

if its not lumbee dr, then i would strongly urge you to retake the DAT my friend. with those scores, your app will not be considered.
good luck.

Perfect, these are honestly my scores. My feelings are crushed. 🙁 No, but really I realize they are not 20s like most people around here, and after my retake they could still be in the teens. I can't devote 12 hours a day to studying because I am dedicated to my volunteer hours, job, my Genetics class in summer school, and the NC rural dental bus this summer. This is why I am only shooting for minimums 18. I don't think my application will go in the trash though. I can't let myself be discouraged.

I am studying read hard now, and I plan on taking the DAT again in August (I have already submitted to AADSAS). Hopefully, my new scores will be in admissions hands before they spit on me. I have been told by several people that DAT scores are not everything, "they are one day in the life of a student". I have a very strong GPA (from start to end), strong volunteer hours, and 8 years of direct patient care. Surely, if I only get my scores up to around 18, which is my goal, I will not get the door slammed in my face, will I? Am I being unrealistic by thinking that all of my strong assets will not out-shine an 18 DAT score? 😕

Dr Lumbee,

i appologize about any negative vibes that i may have sent. however, i am totally being honest with you. sure your application/profile is great. sure yo uare determined to become a dentist. your volunteer work, your extra curricular stuff etc are all good aspects of your life. but to say that having a 3.9 or 5.9 gpa will get you into dental school with scores of 14 just will not happen. this isn't meant to sound harsh or anything. i simply think that it would be a waste of your time and money to apply with scores of 14.
now, as you mentioned, if you do retake the DAT and get 17's and 18's then by all means you'll have a very good chance of getting in.
good luck and please keep us posted.

No way, and I'll tell you why. Good friend of mine applied two years ago with identical DAT scores, and similar GPA. This friend, being concerned about his stats, applied to a ton of schools (~14)....long story short: He got in everywhere he interviewed. Indiana, Case, Pitt, Temple, VCU, Oklahoma, kentucky, UNLV and Arizona.

Now, I realize that was two years ago, and that the numbers get better each year but I am still sure of an acceptance....

To others reading my story, I know this is just one person I speak of but I would imagine it is quite common. Good luck.

WAKE UP CALL LOVE!!!!!!

you yourself put it best. your friend was 2 years ago. things have definitely changed by now. most will tell you that i'd be the last person to say someone will not get in. however, i would never ever believe or think that someone will get in with scores of 14-20 with AA 16. come on now. please someone tell me if i am the only one thinking this.

as for Dr. Lumbee, i am sorry i didn't know you were already planning on retaking the DAT. just get those 17.
good luck

I agree perfect...

I know a lot of schools have mins on all sections. Most schools have a min of 15 in all sections, some schools are higher. One of my buddies this past cycle got rejected from all 12 schools he applied to with similar stats.

Don't feel bad, Lumbee.Dr -- I wish I had gotten to your post before The Disparagement Team here, so that the first response to your first post might have been a little more encouraging. Did you guys even see that this person has EIGHT years of full-time work in the health care field?? I think that in many cases adcoms will consider nontraditional students very differently from students who are right out of college and have no experience in, well, anything.

Definitely a good idea to re-take the DAT, though (but you knew that)!

Lumbee,

Welcome to the forum from a fellow NC native! Don't get discouraged, you have lots going for you and with your background you very well could get an interview at NC (even without re-taking the DAT--although that would help). I PM'd you with more information.

Good luck!

Yeah, some of the schools are - at best - a long shot. My thoughts with those are "you never know" ...with the right letters, experience, and so on, you might just get an interview and from there who knows what can happen.

You tell Lumbee to get 17's (granted his GPA is 3.8) and he's fine. With the exception of PAT and O. Chem I got all 17, 19 and 20. Recall I took DAT before taking O. Chem, the presumption there being that if I scored on O. Chem the way I scored on other sciences I would be 18+...

I'm sure Perfect, JRogoff and others realize that if a school's average is 18, 19, 20, etc...that said school accepted students with 16's and 17's and those scores were balanced out by the many 20's and 21's.

So why be a nay-sayer? Some with better numbers wont get in, some with similar numbers wont get in, and some with worse numbers wont get in. This is nothing profound, it's just the nature of admissions. Still, myself and many others with similar and lower schools will get in.

Truth in the written form. Good luck to all.

Just thought you were because of your post. BCPM is an AMCAS term, as opposed to the AADSAS equivalent BCP.

Oh, i gotcha.
When I signed up for a pre-health committee interview at my school, I was given a "BCPM" gpa calculation sheet that i had to fill out. I thought that was the standard. Maybe it's because most pre-health students apply to medical school at my undergrad?

Okay, here are my stats:
GPA: 2.83 Sci GPA
DAT: 19/20/17, AA/Sci/PAT.
what are my chances at the following schools?
All five Cali schools, UDM, Nova, NYU, Temple, Arizona and UNLV.
Any comments?

Love,

i hate to say this, but have you thought about retaking the DAT?

i would if i were you based on the schools you are applying to.

Love,

i never said that you wouldn't get in anywhere. what i am trying to tell you is that you'll have a tough time getting into the schools that you are applying to with your DAT scores/gpa. truthfully, i think you'll have a good chance at Colorodo (sine you are a resi) and temple. as with the rest (UOP, OSU, UNC, etc) i am not so sure my friend. but then again, like you said, maybe some other aspects of your application ie your statement letter would land you an interview. i know thats possible because i myself got an interview at ucsf last year with my 3.0 gpa and 15 RC. however, getting in will be a long shot at schools like that.

good luck to you and wish you the best.

could you may be share some other aspects of yourself?
ie what kind of dental exp, extra curr activities you may have etc.

its hard to say that you will or you won't with just seeing your AA?PAT.

I worked with the homeless in downtown. I am involved with children's ministry at a church and I have worked with a dentist as a dental assistant for two years. Now, I am working full-time at a dental school as a support staff. Anything else?
