Well many people say that there isn't really a back up school these days since it is so hard to get into a dental school. But for people with great stats who get bunch of interviews, there could be a back up school. Nothing's wrong about that.

Which one is yours? Anonymous vote.

Just out of curiosity, why did you pick those schools?

can't tell. Sorry =)

But so far, 9 people voted and only 2 people voted "others," so I guess I made a resonable list =)

I'm willing to wager the OP chose those schools because most of them historically have the lowest stats... and even those stats aren't low anymore. Also, applicants generally have a tougher time getting into state schools if they aren't a resident of that state. Private schools don't have that requirement to worry about.

I agree with you on NYU, USC and Temple...but WHY do you think the others are backup schools? 😕

Hear hear! Like Creighton! What the?!....I don't know one person at my school that has an interview with Creighton that isn't going through RDEP or IDEP. It's way difficult to get into that school unless your...er...shunwei. The validity of this thread is weak. You should have just used a list with all schools.

Yep, denticus' righteous

Interesting.....
First of all, I thought most people's 1st choice is their state school.

Second, some people who are attending to schools listed above might feel not as pleasing b/c they might have worked thier butt off to get into the schools and some pre-dents are considering as their back up?
But oh well, it's just a poll.

yeah..unless you are shunwei or a bit of whit..you proberly won't get interviews to every school...
Is Creighton in a bad location?? Is that why its up there?? I always thought Tufts was a good school as well...

it's unfortunate that a backup school exists. for example, NYU may be someone's first choice and using it as a backup would hinder him from getting in. (it definately wouldn't make it easier if someone is holding 5 spots.)
please don't forget to withdraw your applications from other schools once you get in to your top choice.
Thanks,
dan

please educate me. What is RDEP and IDEP?

i dont think detroit is a back up school
but thats just my opinion

So, if you are a Utah resident which, incidentally has no dental school, you are a candidate for a select amount of slots reserved for people with Utah residency at Creighton. It's kind of like the WICHE program but it "works". Lots of kids get into Creighton who are from Utah. It's basically like Creighton having compassion on predents who don't have the benefit of getting a residency advantage of admissions into the dental school of their state. IDEP is just like RDEP except it's for predents from Idaho. I'm sure there are other stipulations that I'm missing but I'm just getting started in it so I really can't tell you everything. Anyway, good luck with dental interviews etc...!

seems like this was a reasonable list afterall =)

Case - as a back up school? Competition is pretty stiff there considering they have almost 3k applicants. This thread makes no sense to me.

I thought that as well and their specialties are very competitive as well.

would people really hold onto spots that they didn't want? it's surprising to me that NYU is leading this poll. it actually is my first choice. any elaboration on why?

It's the most expensive dental school AND the class size is too large...other then that it's a great school.

i agree..if the living expense wasnt that high..well i guess sky rocketing is more suitable of a term in this case
and if the class size was not monstrousm, it would be higher on my list, but as is, its a pretty nice...their aesthetic dentistry dep...muy impressive😍

CASE wasn't a back up school for me but I have heard people refer to it as "just in CASE (Western).

i've actually heard that tufts is the most expensive. are you incl living expenses in nyu's cost?

according to ADEA's official guide to dental schools, NYUCD is the most expensive (total w/ living expenses) at $331k. UConn is 2nd at $313k. Tufts is at $302k
UOP is listed as $290k (4 years worth of tuition in 3 years time, as they claim)

UOP is about $108k a year w/ living for 3 years.

Don't let this thread ruffle your feathers. Isn't a "back-up" school simply one which is not your first choice? Everybody has a first choice for only reasons that they can explain, which then puts the rest of the schools a lower preference. That does not mean the school isn't legitimate or even someone else's numero uno.

Personally, I don't give a rat's what someone thinks of the school I choose because I won't choose any old school until I've done my homework and am confident with my choice. And also, I don't have a "back-up". I will be flattered with an acceptance to any dental school and deem it as a personal achievement. I will be lucky if I have the opportunity to choose between schools.

There should'nt be any derogative interpretation to the notion of a "back-up" school anyways. I mean, if you couldn't seriously see yourself attending a certain school then why on earth did you waste the money to apply there?!

If anybody is feeling sad come December 1st about being accepted to your "back-up", just tell them that you would like to please hand over your seat to kdawg.

Well put Kdawg! As a reapplicant I would be very happy to just get an acceptance to a school I am comfortable at. Although I must say, after interviewing last year there are certain schools I did not apply to again because even though I did my "homework" after seeing them in person it was a totally different experience.

If you go to NYU and USC's website and total the cost for the first year alone, you'll see that NYU is only $200 more a year than USC. And this is just for the first year (not sure about the other schools -too lazy too look them up):

NYU: 90,437
USC: 90,234

But for those of us who are married, we have the advantage of an additional income to offset the living expenses a bit. And, in the case of NYU, if you're NYC smart you can live for much less than 30K a year (Esp. if you have an additional income).

Either way, I'm in - I'm going to NYU and I really don't care if anyone else thinks it's a back up school or not.

I don't understand the concept of a backup school. Apply to schools that you like, either for the location, curriculum, cost, or the simple fact that you meet the pre-reqs.

UOP is about $108k a year w/ living for 3 years.

By the calculations I did using school provided figures, and factoring in loan capitalization, Pacific was the cheaper than Columbia and Nova, and only slightly more expensive than UNLV (out of state). It's significantly cheaper than NYU, USC, Tufts or BU.

Note that I do have a moderate scholarship and also note that the school wayyyyyyy overbudgets for food and rent. I plan to get out of here with 250k max.

seems like NYU wins the gold medal!

USC has the most hate from SDNers so I am surprised that it hasn't won the gold metal yet...

Yea but you would still have to get in to a backup school 😛

I was told that after one year you could switch to in-state tuition at UNLV. Making tuition expenses $120k instead of ~$214k.

This was taken into account in the calculation, which also includes cost of living, fees, average tuition increases, inflation and loan capitalization. 👍

I thought USC has higher cost than NYU. Isn't it?

predents says UI chicago is most expensive (out of state), really?

i don't really have full faith in all those numbers. i do the logical thing, as tedious as it may be.....check each school's site. though it appears they overestimate, thats fine. i know i'd live cheaper but as a margin of safety i'll know approximately the max cost (a.k.a. debt👎) i'll be walking away with.

Any change in thoughts/perspectives?

yeah UIC is very expensive out of state. However Chicago is cheaper than NYU or USC surrounding areas. My fiance and I have a great 3 bedroom apartment for $1500 a month. She also makes a ton of money so I not too worried about debt....

NYU was my first choice and my backup :boom:

which ever school you think that you can get into should be your primary and your backup.

wherever I get in is where I am going... so i guess every school is my back-up school.

So.. OP, still your back up school(s)

Seriously, and Michigan!

Grats on Tufts Supra, not sure if I mentioned that before, glad a school finally came to their senses

lmao thanks man, glad this process is over, I often reminisce to the pre-DAT days, man did they suck! Sick job on OSU, I read about that school...
