One of my friends entering this fall said that for ED they are going with less interviewed and about the same acceptances(gave around 40 ED interviews and accepted around 35 for entering 2010 class). This is probably just hear say though.... Are you guys residents?

yup I'm a resident and hopefully some day I'll be a diagnostic radiology resident too lol! are you doing ED too?

Yeah I'm a KS resident.... applying ED with a 3.3 c, and 3.5 sGPA.... working on the MCAT to try and bring up my numbers competitiveness. I want to go to KU so bad!

does anyone know if the 3.5cGPA is enforced for ED and a hard cut-off or is just a reccomendation?

I think it's a recommendation, but they are shooting for numbers near 3.5 and 28. The worst that could happen is that one is pushed back a little bit later than the regular applicants and won't be able to apply to the other schools until September. However, One could still apply to DO schools during ED. Can anyone answer this?

Does anyone know total number of ED applicants? to KU? is this in MSAR?

I started working on my application and have one transcript sent in already, still waiting on two more. I have one more lor to get and finishing up my ps. I take the MCAT on the 17th   and depending on my score will hopefully apply ED. If it's not a 28 then I'll do regular decision. It's so hard to believe that I'm finally ready to apply. crazy!

I'm not sure about this but I THINK I heard the number from 120-200....70 are interviewed and approx. 50 are accepted. Someone help?

Here's the data for the 2010 cycle.

Last year 115 applied EDP, 60 were interviewed for EDP, and 20 were rolled over into Regular Decision with October interviews. The rest were rolled over with interviews in November or later, if at all.

No idea how many were accepted.

I hope this helps.

I was accepted EDP this year. From what I know, I would not apply EDP if you are below a 28 MCAT and 3.5. EDP is supposedly harder than regular decision. It's hard to get an interview in EDP, but if you do, then your chances are very high for an acceptance. In RD, they hand out interviews to everyone.

I know 2 years ago, the #s for EDP were: 140 applied, 70 invited to interview, and 43 accepted. The rest were pushed back to RD. For this year, UTKD actually knows the #s. At the EDP interview they told us that the previous year they only accepted ~60% of EDP interviewees and wanted to boost that for our year. In past years, they said they accepted 90%+ of EDP interviewees. The reason they only accepted ~60% (43/70) 2 years ago was because they handed out interviews based on numbers and didn't read the applications much until the interviews. At that point, they said they were left with a bunch of ppl they felt had nothing beyond numbers, so they only accepted 60%. So, for my year (this year), they were much stricter on giving out interviews. They said they read each EDP application in detail. So, they looked at your #s but also heavily looked into your volunteering, clinical experience, recs, etc. I think they said they interviewed 60 EDPers this year. No idea how many got in but I would expect it to be closer to that 90% than 60% due to the changes in EDP admissions.

If you want a good recommendation on if you should apply EDP, then contact Sally Mccurdy and ask her.

Hello, this is great article. I have blog and I thanks to say you thanks. Regards!

You technically can apply to DO schools, but you aren't supposed to... Because KU expects that when they give you a seat in their class, you have not had any other offers and are obligated to accept that seat.

I had applied ED 2 years ago and with 4.0 GPA and 25 MCAT and I was not interviewed for ED, but I was pushed back for a RD interview. Unfortunately, I got the rejection letter and was not wait-listed.

Applying for an allopathic MD school has become increasingly hard... many have told me this and I definitely saw this for myself. I raised my MCAT significantly but was wait-listed this past year. Just a little advice... numbers will get you the interview, but your interview is incredibly important. Every little aspect of your application affects your rank on the list.

This past year the reason for being wait-listed (pretty much at the bottom) was my job. It represented a "potential risk" ... I don't want to freak anyone out but I did want to give everyone a headsup to not underestimate the process
thanks for the info! If you don't mind.....could you tell us what kind of job is it? Could you be a card dealer at a casino? Debt collector?

What up my fellow Kansans? Is everyone applying ED? I don't think I'm going to.

Depends on what my MCAT score is. If it's high enough I am thinking about it, but I am also debating on submitting my app to be on top of the pile fo RD applicants, but I think the timing will be tricky.

I guess in other words, I have no idea. :D

Sounds to me like your job is the factor in your acceptance at KU. Have you tried applying to a different school? It's not all about stats, schools also look at the qualities you have and what you will bring to the school and if you match what they are looking for.

Good luck, everyone!

Here is a snippet from their website "A 3.5 cumulative grade point average and an MCAT score of 28 are suggested for EDP applicants." They also look at your EC and see what you bring to the table. If you had a rocky start with your grades but finished strong, they will also take that into account.

Just because you are a little low in one area doesn't mean you are out of the game. If you have really good EC's and a strong MCAT, that will help balance out the low cumulative GPA. Build on your strengths - everyone makes mistakes.

Yeah, it's really hard to decide what I should do for this application. I have that 3.3 cGPA but a massive upward trend from a bad freshman year. I've done better every semester since and classes only got harder (biochem+advanced organic+bio, etc.)... So I take the MCAT the last possible date you can for EDP, July 16. I know I can do well on the test, it's just debating whether to apply EDP to KU and risk getting rolled over into RD interviews, and further delaying apps elsewhere. But if I get an interview for EDP, the rates for acceptance are astronomically higher than RD. So I don't know what route I should take.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I take mine next Thurs and hate having to wait until July to submit my application. It's so close to when they start taking RD apps that I'm kinda torn on what to do. stupid stress!

Oh god...here I am again...:(

You applied last cycle and didn't get in? I just looked at you mdapps and it looked pretty solid. How much volunteering had you done?

Let's kick butt this cycle buddy! How's ur app going? I just submitted my primary app for Early Decision Admission

I actually applied ED and didn't get the interview. Got rolled into RD for an October interview and thought I did fairly well, but not perfect by any means.

I've got research, jobs, and plenty of shadowing, but unfortunately I did not do any significant amount of volunteer work during the 3 years that I was in college.

This time around, that's what I've been focusing on, so hopefully I will fare better.

hi again omsy
gl this round!

wow yeah that's rough... I only have done a semester with a boys and girls club and a mission trip to central america. That worries me for sure.

Good luck this time!

:luck::xf: Good luck! I am hoping that I can get a decent MCAT score this Thurs, and I also hope my limited volunteer experience doesn't hurt me. I'd much rather be rejected from that than a low MCAT tho. It's not as expensive to volunteer. :D

Thanks guys, I wish you all good luck as well ;)

I just submitted my primary and about had an aneurysm....

Do the secondaries for KU stay the same, more or less, year-to-year?

Good luck on the MCAT BWSTW and btw is that a Dostoevsky screen name?

Thank you!
The secondaries are pretty similar each year. I've already answered some od them. He he
My screen name is acually a play on initials.
Good luck to you!

If Wichita opened up their campus to a 4 year school, would you consider going there instead of KC?

Yes, even better (if you live in Wichita that is).

Yeah, I am definitely not looking forward to commuting every weekend. I am hoping that when I'm accepted (oh that's right, it's gunna happen :)) the program will be up and running. I read in the WBJ that they are going to open up 9 seats Fall '11, and 12 in Fall '12. That would just be too sweet.

+1...Actually can I like +10 that? haha yeah, a four year program in Wichita will be legit... plus they are opening up a four year program in Salina soon so that's even more spots.

on a side note.... so I was talking to a friend that got in ED for this Fall's class... he said that if you're from Wichita that it is favorable for you. A lot (majority?) of applicants are from the KC area and KUMC wants to "diversify" by accepting evenly throughout the state.

Wow, I haven't heard anything about a program in Salina. That would be nice.

That is an interesting piece of information regarding applicants from Wichita. Would be kinda nice if its true. I can use all the help I can get.:D

lol...when I saw that article last month, I was like, lol I used to shadow Dr. Cathcart-Rake while in HS and had no idead what he was talking about back then. BTW, wow my primary was verified and processed in one day instead of a month! Talking about a special treatment there.

yeah I got verified in a day... I was like, "what's all this talk of 3 week verification times?"

That's awesome. Did you have everything filled in/completed before you submitted? LOR, MCAT, transcripts, etc?

I had transcripts in. LOR's aren't there yet and I take the MCAT July 16th.

Lol, ya EDP gets verfied within 3 days MAX.

RD gets verified in like a Month.

EDP just goes to the top of the verification stack.

Oh ya! I'm deferring for a year so I'll be in the class of 2015 with my GF you guys/gals.

Good Luck OMZY !!

How do you do that if you don't mind me asking? You must be in some really special situation right? If I remember correctly from the posts, I think your GF is #1 on the waitlist? I apologize for my nosiness lol

I work at my family's grocery store and I have been helping them since I was 8. From what I know, the committee feels that my family may continue to pressure me to work while I am in medical school and that is the "potential risk" that it poses. I completely understand their reason... so to show that I can leave freely, I quit and I've been jobless for awhile now lol

But no worries! I am looking for another job and doing community service and a research project this summer :D

Oh, I have done almost every possible thing even while working full-time. Volunteer work in many different areas, research at the University of Kansas Medical Center, lab research, physician shadowing in different specialties on multiple occasions, joined the KU Work Group... I didn't do all of it to check off things that pre-medical students should do. Instead, I chose activities that I truly enjoyed and they all helped to broaden my perspective on servicing the community.

Unfortunately, I only applied to 4 schools. I was wait-listed at 3 and the 4th didn't interview me because one of my professors submitted her LOR a day late. I'm definitely taking the Early Decision route this year and hoping for the best!
