Oh and KU's website was just updated for our cycle + "campus locations"... SWEET!!

Hi I applied last year to KU EDP, did not get an interview, so was placed into regular decision. I received a very early interview and then was placed on the alternate list #42. Obviously I did not get a slot seeing as though Dean McCurdy said she would be surprised to see more than 5. I am reapplying and trying to make EDP deadline (I know I'm late but have had some major chaos in my life.) I am trying to write a personal statement. I have some new events that I would like to incorporate but I am just wondering if anyone has any advice about what to put in the statement, what to leave out, and should I use the same one from last year just make the changes I want. If it makes a difference Dean McCurdy told me that the main reason I did not get accepted was because there were so many strong re-applicants and there were no red flags with my application. Thank you in advance for any info and advice.

BWSTW are you applying early decision?
saw you said you were submitting in july, isnt it due by july 1st for ED?

I'm waiting to see what my MCAT score is before I apply to decide if I want to apply ED, or just wait and apply RD.

I think it would help if you reworked your whole PS adding in the new stuff and keep the stuff that was strong from the first one. Anything that you've done that has helped you develop qualities/skills that would make you a good doctor, helped you to understand the role of physicians and has helped solidify your decision are things you want to hit on. Sounds like you have a good chance of getting in, it's just a matter of when you get in. Not everyone gets in the first time, so hang in there!:luck:

....through this experience I have expanded upon my care giving abilities, if you accept me I will do your dry cleaning and clean your house until I am finished with residency, and communication skills.

Where at on the website? I'm sure I'll find it by the time you respond, but just in case I better ask. 😉

I just remembered that I had a really good question to ask after my interview, but now I can't remember what it was. 🙁 I hate when these things come to me in my car.... no where to write it down!

That would be sa-weet! I am wondering if Wichita would be a good fit for me tho. I am considering either EM or IM at the moment, and the description of the Wichita campus said it would focus on primary care in community-based hospitals.

So there will potentially be 16 extra spots or a ~10% increase in enrollment. :xf::xf::xf:

my thoughts exactly. The interview section said they would interview some people in Wichita and in Salina. So I wonder what the distinct factors will be in selecting people for those programs. City of residency, preference, how well you can work with just 7 other people? Or I wonder if it will be like the current 3rd/4th year lottery system for Wichita.

What if there were 15 members on the admissions committee? That's a lot of cleaning lol

Hey guys, I was born in Topeka, and lived in Kansas while my Dad completed his residency, but haven't lived there since.

Considered Kansas ties??

I would love to come back! 🙂

I would read over KUMC SoM's site and their statement on OOS applicants. They state pretty clearly what's what. I think they want to see family that currently lives in the state or a strong connection to the state, etc... If you read over the statement on the site and don't see what they want, call admissions and ask, they are super helpful and friendly.

So I messed up and didn't realize I needed to register for the MCAT before everyone and their dog filled up all the seats. Had to move my test date up to July 8th and have to take it in Oklahoma 😱
...noob mistake, noob mistake...

🙁 that sucks! I made that mistake too, but it actually worked out in my favor. Hopefully yours will too...:luck::luck:

If you don't mind me asking, how come you are retaking? (I apologize if you have already mentioned this)

No need to apologize, I took my MCAT August of 2007 the first time (way too early) and it is no longer considered by most medical schools. Thats a bummer, because I was pretty satisfied with it (32O). I have come a long way since I took it, though, so I expect to do better this time, despite the time crunch :xf:

Ok, I remember you saying you took it earlier than most people, but didn't realize that meant "years" before most. That is a good score though. Just think what 3 years of additional classes and knowledge can get you! Hell, you don't need luck... you're gunna rock it - like a hurricane! 😀

Lol, thanks, I hope you do stellar as well 😀

Oh dear lord, I just had pre-natal flashbacks to Iroc-Z's, leopard print pants, and lipstick on dudes.

 Good times! I'm glad I was young enough to miss most of it!

come on guys and gals! We're not too far behind Columbia on posts... let's get this thread rolling! Don't make me break out more 80's lyrics. Oh, that's right... I'll do it!

Seriously people, we need some heavy hitters!

So it looks like we are 3rd behind Columbia and Case Western. CW has 175, and Columbia has 143 something....

Anyone else reading this must be like "most worthless thread ever" haha

Yeah I'm kinda sad I did actually.
ha ha I had crimp perms when I was a kid and holes in the knees of my jeans. I'm sure I had a few hot pink items in my closet too. 😀

ah man! We really need to step up our game. I often wonder what lurkers think when they read this thread :meanie:

It's coming guys. Secondary should be here next week and then interviews. Let's kick butt!.........but before all of that stuff, happy 4th of July!

Thank you guys for your feedback. I worked some new stuff into my old one. I think its much better. I am SOOO not looking forward to interviews. I had a horrible experience with my interview last year and I hope that there is not a repeat of that.

hmm...based on the comments that Dean McCurdy read to me, mine were good, but my zero shadowing in college got in the way. To be honest without revealing much lol....my first interviewer, a presenter of my app, is also the chair of the committee. Based on his comments, he seemed to have fought pretty hard for me lol because he was putting a bunch of other things down to make up for my zero shadowing. Dean McCurdy read one of the lines from his comments and it made me to drop my jaw and said "HOLY CR@P WOW" in my mind lol. But we all know that it's the votes from all of the members that will determine one's fate. I had a blank sheet of paper in the end of the convo and the only thing that was repeated repetitively was "get some shadowing done." lol I was dumb for being too confident last cycle thinking that I didn't need Early Decision Admission. The over-confident feeling came from me blowing the bejesus out of close to 20 upper-level bio science courses (probably 17 or 18) in the last two years of my undergrad work at KU, and that feeling is just stupid period lol. It costed me an admission to KU Med and I only applied to KU Med and later SLU but the snow storms lol got my app to be late. I am getting some shadowing done and hopefully things will go well this year and for you guys too! lol

:luck::luck: Hope you have just as good feedback this year and get in with your shadowing experience!

Labs beat me to it. It seems like they're adding one or two every year lol. FOr #11 regarding academic experiences, if some are not in school earning grades, then that section would be blank?

I think so... I'm reading it as a way to allow the re-applicant an opportunity to explain what they have done to better their gpa's.
