Its that time of year again.

who all has applied?

gauging from last years thread it looks like the first week of sept. will be the first batch of interview invites?

hopefully more good news since they'll be increasing seats to 100 (that's correct isnt it?)

Mine is currently received/under review. mailing date was 6/27/11

i called and asked about the extra seats and they said they haven't set a date for expanding the class size yet, but my family told me it has been mentioned in the news like it's supposed to happen this year. according to their website the new building should be open for use in january so i don't see why it wouldn't happen for this application cycle.

Would the extra 20 seats be OOS or in-state? Or a mix? Anyone know?

i would assume a mix.

the past sizes have been around the 80-81 mark. with 12-13 being out of state (from what i remember, not sure if those stats are accurate).

not sure how many of the extra 20 will be OOS.

i'm not sure either, but i do know the reason they have said they are expanding is because most of the state is under served for dentistry, so i would assume most of those seats would go to residents or applicants who plan on staying in NC to practice.

Its my understanding that the extra seats are on hold indefinitely due to state budget restraints. Most of the extra dental money is going towards getting ECU off the ground and running...it was even discussed that ECU could be shut down about six months ago due to lack on funding. So I don't expect there to be any more slots available for the time being....

^That's correct. No expansion to 100 seats this year due to budget and therefore lack of staff issues, though that was original plan.

And from what I hear the building will be opening in February 2012, but don't quote me on that.

Just wanted to reach out to those of us interviewing at UNC on 9/24. I confirmed the interview with Ms. Oakes on Monday and I just received the information packet. I am planning on attending the social on the 23rd with the current students. After reading the feedback on SDN it sounds like it will be a fairly laid-back process; nevertheless, the interview appears to be vitally important at UNC when you consider the acceptance equation that several people have referenced. Initially, the additional 20 seats were to be 50/50 mix of in-state and out-of-state. In regards to those applying, I'll be glad to attempt to answer any questions you may have, because I know how it feels during the app cycle, b/c I was just in your shoes a year ago. Good luck!

does anyone know if i can have a letter of recommendation sent directly to UNC or do they not like that? i have a family friend that is an alumni of the dental school who is willing to write a school specific LOR, but i'm not sure if they will accept an additional letter that isn't submitted to AADSAS.

Not necessarily sure. If you think it would be very helpful, then sure, you'll want it in your file, but I wouldn't have more than 4 or 5 recommendations. However, I would call the admission office to see if you can have an "additional dentist recommendation" added to your file.
