Is there a general consensus as to what are the 1st semester classes in med-school, or is it completely different based on the school?

The schools will generally vary depending on the curriculum style at the school (eg traditional vs systems-based integrated). You will generally be covering the following basic and not-so-basic sciences in the first two years of med school: biochem, cell bio, physio, immuno, histo, anatomy+embryo, neuro, genetics, path, etc

So picking up pretty much any biology book and just starting to read will be some good prep?

Anyone have a good picture of a dead horse being bludgeoned?

In all seriousness amikhchi, your post has got to be one of the most covered topics. Most people will tell you to enjoy your time off before school since you will soon enough be getting more than enough studying.

The small amount you could teach yourself by feeling around in the dark is far outweighed by the chance to relax and summon your reserves. You'll have plenty of time to learn medicine in medical school. 😉

i know i suppose it isn't productive to do so, but my issue is if i do relax for a whole year i fear i will fall out of the "school-mode"

i guess i can just try to get back into that mode a month before... yeah now that i think about it, that sounds like a better idea...

academic fatigue >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> forgetting how to remember

Prioritize accordingly.

You could take some random non-academic courses at the local civic center if you want to keep a classroom mindset. Something fun and interesting, like an intro to car repair or cooking course. I'd kill for a little time to dilettante around like that.
