From this month's issue of the dentaltown magazine:

Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement.

The first patient is examined within the hour, is X-rayed the same day and has a time book for surgery the following week.

The second sees his family doctor after waiting a week for an appointment, then waits 18 weeks to see a specialist, then gets an X-ray, which isn't reviewed for another month and finally has his surgery scheduled for a year from then.

Why the different treatment for the two patients? The first is a golden retriever. The second is a senior citizen.

Funny, the only problem is patient #1 will have a hospital bill that is 3 times patient #2. I just coughed up $700 for a cat emergency bill.

my grandmother sent me that joke via email a couple of months ago. hits a little too close to home but i guess that's what makes it funny!!

Two lessons can be learned from these cases:
Patient one: Don't have pets.
Patient two: Die before you can't drive or can't walk.

It's funny how we can almost keep anyone alive but the lawyers have to come in and make it almost impossible to enjoy...

I just dumped more than $1000 on my cat at the vet. More will follow. I don't see what this has to do with lawyers. It seems like greed is generally the problem at all steps in the process.

greed by the vet u mean?? look at vet salaries and compare that to dentists and physicians who have comparable training of post-college education. it seems like going to the vet is expensive because almost no one has insurance for their pets. imagine how much the human patient in the example would have to pay if he/she was paying cash and didn't have insurance

Let us know how your free dental clinic works out. 😉

I don't know if this is true, but I have heard that vetrinary school is even harder to gain admittance to than dental or medical school. Anybody heard any truth behind this?

Yup, I've heard that as well. Probably based upon the applicants per available slot. Go ask the vet boards.

Also...no one goes into it for the money. So I bet you have some real passionate people that are willing to do alot to get in.

Hmm. That must be why my sister is making that fat bankroll. She's a vet. She's got 5 vet's working for her in her clinic, she spends about 2 days a week working. Oh, and one Saturday a month. Poor thing. What a workaholic.

Wow, this thread makes me think that animals are a waste of time and money.

Oh and Vet school is competitive. I just didn't want to be up a cow's hoo-hoo to my shoulder, diggin for a calf for a meager salary

I can go knuckle deep into a human's mouth and earn more. 😀

I didn't say anything about free healthcare or vet care. What I'm saying is that all of the players in the health market all want to maximize personal gain without really thinking about the end cost to the consumer. You can put your finger on the lawyers if it makes you feel better but at the end of the day everyone in the system is taking a percentage to include the physician/dentist/vet as well as the technicians, equipment suppliers, pharm reps, pharm companies, investors, and the list goes on... It's not unreasonable to ask to make a living in a line of work. However, healthcare providers can lose track of what their patients go through in order to pay a bill.
