Hi there, I would love some advice on this! Hopefully it’s not a neurotic question...

I am a traditional applicant and have already submitted all my secondaries for this cycle. I already have one W on my transcript from sophomore year (I withdrew from Orgo 2 and then retook it at another college over the summer). I am a double major, with my secondary major in a humanities disciple.

As usual, we registered for classes back in March for this fall semester, and for my second major I had to take on a fieldwork class. I really didn’t want to because I don’t have my own car, so in order to do the fieldwork I have to go to my parents’ every weekend and borrow their car to drive half an hour.

However, the department made a curriculum change last week which means I no longer need to take this fieldwork class. I really want to drop this class and transfer into another one that is more interesting to me, doesn’t require travel, and I’m more likely to get an A in. Unfortunately, I realized this about a day after the drop deadline, so dropping this class now means a W on my transcript.

My question is just how bad is that going to look, to have two Ws? I wouldn’t have cared if it was just this one, but I already have the one W that was actually a result of doing badly in the class, so I’m worried adcoms would think this second one is the same. On the other hand, it’s not a STEM class and I’m replacing it with another class in the same major. IF I have a chance to explain this on a secondary, I think it would be fine, but not all schools offer a space for this. I don’t think this will affect me too much this cycle, but I am not so confident that I won’t end up a re-applicant.

Please let me know what you think. Thank you!

I’m interested to see what more experienced people say but I really don’t think it’s going to sway your application that much either way.

I glance at your transcript and go for vibes. This doesn’t seem like something I’d really worry about too much.

It’s obviously not a good thing, but if you have an otherwise good application I don’t think it will matter much. I guess what I’m saying is your MCAT, GPA, essays, etc all matter much, much more.

Thank you for your insight! I guess I should’ve mentioned this in the original post, but I don’t have super great stats (3.6 cGPA, 3.4 sGPA, 514) so I’m probably in a more precarious position in general and that’s why I’m worried little things like this could matter a lot.

Even if we assume you drop a class because you are not doing well, it shows that you have the good sense to take the W rather than struggle on and do poorly.

This a nothingburger!

Ws are not Fs.

What concerns Adcoms are multiple Ws in a sea of good grades, which make it appear that one is engaging in GPA protection. Two Ws are nothing.
