2006 NC Med Schools Acceptance/Rejection Thread part 01

So, the total count on this thread is 1 secondary to EDP and 3 secondaries to regular applicants. For those of you reapplying...did things start out this slowly last cycle when UNC released secondaries or did a buttload go out on the same day? I was verified June 27th and have not heard anything, but I think it's still too early to get worried. I think with so few people posting here, UNC probably hasn't released that many yet....at least I hope not. Hang in there, Bob. With your numbers I can't believe you wouldn't hear from UNC.

Thanks Dave. I will be the first to admit I have grown very pessimistic about this whole process ( I am a reapplicant). I will call tomorrow and just ask whats going on and post it for you guys.

Definitely call them. Lisa and everone in the admissions office are really nice. It won't hurt to call them.

I can't really answer this one because last year I was an August MCATer as well. I got my secondary in late November, and was complete at UNC probably the last few days of October. They don't require (or at least last year didn't) that you get letters of rec in until a few weeks after your interview.

Maybe some of the posters from last year's thread will respond. Bust should check in sometime. Seethrew? i6? CanI? Are you guys buried in studying? 😛

I mean from UNC. But I was under the impression that they send out secondaries in the order AMCAS was verified. I have a 3.5 and a 31 from WAKE. I think I would get a secondary at least ....

Yeah I know. I mean "not amused" in a humorous sort of a way. Anyway I called the admissions office and I have to say they were by far and a way the nicest admissions people I have ever talked to! I wanted to yell on the phone "why are you so freakin nice" .. most of the time I hate admissions people as they are so mean and wouldnt give you the time of day. Anyway I asked three questions.

1) Is an applicant who only has residency for only 1 year treated differently than a NC resident who has been here all their life?
Survey Says : Absolutely not. You are either an NC resident or you are not, the amount of time means absolutely nothing. Great Answer!

2) IF someone was verified June 15th and they havent received a secondary yet is it a good assumption they wont be receiving one?
Survey Says: Absolutely not. They have 1000's of apps and are reviewing them the best they can not in chronological order. They are just starting to send out secondaries and only to a few people as they just finished EDP. She says not to worry and to excercise patience.

Damn I need some Beta Blockers......

BOBODR, I'm glad you called them. Makes you feel better. And yeah, they are nice huh? That was one thing I got from the MED program. It really seems that the professors and administration at the school care for the students. Its just too bad that they're so slow. Kinda gives the wrong impression.

Sure, no problem. I received the secondary by email 7/19. I got the email saying they'd received all my stuff (Supplementary form, Statement of Residence, Photo card, and personal essay) on 8/5, and I got an email on 8/30 that said:

Your application is complete and has been reviewed.* We would like to invite you in for an interview.* Please call me as soon as possible to schedule an interview.

then it had contact info after it.

I called and got an interview on the 14th, but since ECU was closed that day because of Hurricane Ophelia, I rescheduled for the 28th, and am going next week!

However, I may have been complete before the 30th, because I used Interfolio for my letters of rec, but there's no way to know, because they don't have a status page (that I know of.) I didn't interview there last year, but if you have any other questions I'd be happy to answer them. That's what this thread is for. Good luck!

There are hard cutoffs one of which is no MCAT subscore is to be 7 or below, there is a GPA cutoff, but I'm not sure what that is, and they also take into account your undergrad campus' reputation (they use a Barron ranking). They feel that this way they do not foster false hope and save you guys money. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. However, a lot of people on here got pre-sec rejections and had pretty decent stats. I'm still on hold at Wake pending Aug. MCAT score release, but I hope I don't join the ranks of the rejection letters with my 3.52 overall, 3.7 bcpm gpas. 😳

Sally those are impressive numbers...how didnt u get into UNC last yr. That scares me 🙁 DO you mind telling what college you went to. As you know I went to Wake.

Thanks MustangSally. I'm sure you have read a bunch about the ECU interview, but I figure another feedback couldn't hurt. I applied to ECU very late last year since I was an August MCATer. Interviewed at the end of February and to my surprise, I really liked the school. I have been raised up as a city kid but Greenville gives me the close-knit homey feeling of a small, quiet town. The students are really cool and the dean of admission seems to be a very kind man. You will have two interviews, 1 with a med student, another with a faculty. Both interviews would be closed file so the only info that they know about you is your GPA, MCAT, and alma mater. The student interviewer is usually very laid back and friend. They will ask the kind of questions to help them determine whether you would fit in with the school: your hobbies, your favorite class, favorite book, why ECU, etc. I think ECU is very particular in selecting people who has a genuine desire to pratice primary care especially in rural eastern NC. They have been known to reject many people with stellar stats that would not suffice their mission. If you are sincere and have an interest in primary care, you will certianly appeal to them. Given your stats, I'm sure you would have a great chance of acceptance. Good luck mustangsally. 🙂

Wow, thanks, confuse. It's good to get some info like that, even though I have read the interview feedback. I'm not too worried about the interview, but I expect that will change by Wednesday morning! 😉 I'm a small-town girl, and don't think I could ever live in a big city permanently, so I think ECU might just be a perfect place for me. My mentor is my family practice physician, and I'm really starting to develop an interest in family practice myself, so I hope I get accepted!

I'm surprised more people on here haven't gotten interviews at ECU. This just shows how random this whole process is.

Hey, thanks guys! I'm heading out Monday morning to stay with my sis in Winston, which is about half-way for me to ECU, 'cause I'm in the mountains. Tuesday I'll be going the rest of the way and getting familiar with the area etc. I may not have internet access, but we're all waiting to hear what happens with you EDP folks.

I just wanted to tell everyone to hang in there! Stick with it guys! Don't give up. The hardest part is getting in. Took me 3 years, tons of waitlist fun, ect, ect.

A couple of tips that I think helped me
1. get everything in as soon as you can. application, secondary, recs
2. after you interview email the people you interviewed with. Thank them, keep in touch(if you are reapplying email the people you interviewed with the first time and let them know that you are interviewing again)
3. keep the admissions office updated, but don't do it all in one letter. Trickle in the material. Everytime something new comes into the admissions office your application gets flaged and it comes up again in their meetings. One month send a letter of updated volunteering, the next month have someone new send a letter of rec,ect. Do anything different just to send them something to have your application flagged
4. send a letter of intent to the admissions director to the school you want to go to. tell them why you think their school is so great and why you want to go there. it sounds cheesy, but it means alot to them

I didn't know the white coat ceremony was yesterday. I bet it was emotional, but kewl as well. 😉 i'm looking forward to mine, whenever and wherever it may be.

Bust, only a few of us on here are reapplicants. So most of the applicants this year are "new people." Maybe we should be nice to them because they outnumber us? 😉

Isn't the application process hazing enough? 😛 I think so. Or maybe that is why UNC is kind of slow on sending out secondaries? Making all of us wait. . . But good things come to those who wait, and patience is a virtue. Of course, patients are virtues as well, sometimes.

I'm not sure if I agree about football being good, but maybe I'll leave that one up to you guys. . .

So the first NC interviewers of the regular interview season start this week. Good luck to everyone! We should post our experiences in this thread to help each other out. And I'll be checking in on Oct. 1 if we haven't heard about Pithlit's decision at UNC for early decision. We're all hoping to hear good news soon!

Let's hope that I hear soon. They tell you Oct 1st, but ECU doesn't always play by the AAMC rules on timelines. I heard that only 17 students applied EDP. Last year @10 out of 22 students got in EDP. That info was from Sue in the Admissions office.
