I got the Wake rejection today.... :barf:

I wonder if anyone has gotten rejected from Wake pre secondary and gotten into UNC?

In your opinions is a 3.5 / 31 (9-9-13)S competitive at UNC, very solid EC's, and letters from my PI and an MD i see patients with. Taking some grad school classes now. In state resident.
I'd say you are competitive on paper.
dont stress to much about the reject... onna my good friends who is attending hopkins in the fall got waitlisted at wake.... i got rejected from one of my NY state schools and accepted at duke... it never quite makes sense... besides, chapel hill is cooler 😉

willthatsall -> if those are your stats i'd say apply and would think you would have a real good chance.

pith??? - sounds competitive to me too. i don't know who gujodoc is and why he/she would know - hrm. but i agree.

i was an out of state applicant with ties to NC. i didn't get my secondary until october - it was my last of 20! my interview was shortly thereafter. got no other word until april!!!! which said i was waitlisted and got in may 16th. i also managed to get a sweet *resident* scholarship - AS AN ORIGINALLY OUT OF STATE APPLICANT! this is a long annoying trip, but sometimes things just work out perfectly.

ADVICE: if you are out of state and REALLY want to go to UNC move somewhere to NC NOW!!! you *may* be able to get instate rates, if not 1st, than 2nd semester.

You know... I find it highly unethical that you constantly talk about certain topics that you really should leave for other posters to handle (ie NC schools).

Also, your comments were inane and off topic in regard to the poster who had a parent in prison. If you are well-intentioned, you practice being more responsible. Sometimes maturity is displayed by not saying anything at all.

Only basing my info off of what is reported in the MSAR. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that if there are say 100 seats, and only few go to out of staters, while the majority go to in staters, that being an in state resident increases your chances highly.

Second off, it doesn't take a genius to look at the avg stats and realize whether a person has a chance or not at a particular school.

But whatever. And based on the data presented by various schools, both on their websites and the MSAR, I think a person will be able to determine the answer to that particular person's question regardless of whether or not they live in the particular state.

So I don't see what your problem is with my response or how it is unethical exactly. Besides the person was asking students not adcoms, since this is a student discussion board I'd assume they would have the common sense to realize that students will try to answer with their honest opinions or thoughts based on their knowledge, but that it is the individual's duty to also consult the adcom directors or deans if they would like more professional advice.

I don't know, maybe that's me but I take that to be common sense.

I just reread what I wrote in that post, and upon rereading it, you are right. I shouldn't have posted what I did and will delete it in a second. I will take your comment more seriously, because I will admit I'm human and may not have made a good call on that one. So I apologize.

However, in regards to the first part of your post, I stand by my comments. Perhaps, when I give my two cents on a person's chances, I hope they have the common sense to realize that we all give our opinions based on data charts and websites, but that for more detailed info, they should know that people in the admissions office are probably the most accurate source.

Just for sake of validating my claim, I looked at the TPR website as well as USNEWS website and they both claim the average is about 31 or so, and 3.7 is the GPA avg. So based on that info and the poster's stats, I'd say if the rest of the application is solid and they are an instate resident, they'd have a chance. But again, that's based on statistical data.

I did

Oooh, how inspiring! Would you mind posting your stats? It would help those of us who are losing hope or in doubt.

Congrats on gettin' into UNC, by the way!

Well, I am going to wait until i get my MCATs back to apply, not smart but I want options.

To all the new folk. I'm a UNC grad, summer 2005, last thursday!
Did undergrad in 3 years. 3.8 GPA MCAT 29, I got WL this past year and 1 spots from the promise land. Hopefully some higher MCATs can put me in carolina blue one again.
I did standard EC but to the extreme.
They don't matter, high stats and clinical exp. and your set, unless your going Duke, then playing the flute for the head of state in China would help.

Hi Sally 😛

Hey Bust! 😉 Nice to have you on board, although I hate to see you having to MCAT again and reapply. 😡 Perhaps the third time will be the charm for both of us! :luck:

I'm hoping the waitlist might work out for ya after all. "It's not over until the fat lady sings," as ms. seethrew has said.

Here's hoping we're both wearin' Carolina Blue this time next year! 😍

Anyone know when UNC sent its secondaries in previous years?

No for awhile, UNC is putting their secondary online this year, Mrs. Alston is designing it now, just make sure when you send it in to follow up like an obsessed Pop-star mom, like a crazy person. Call weekly to update, try tuesday instead of Mondays, no one is for sure but its seems like committees meet either end off the week, weekend (not likely), or on Mondays.

Oooh, Bust is on top of things! An online secondary, huh? That's convenient.

Congrats on the gradumakating, Bust!

Tisk tisk guys, page 6!!!!
Hopefully everyone is getting things in, Sally two weeks until M-day 😱

Oh no, Bust! I'm not ready for M-day! 🙁 😳 I hope you are.

I'm gonna set an all-time low for PS. I just know it.

Any word from UNC, guys?

I still haven't heard from UNC, anyone else?

Nope. But I'm waiting on new MCAT scores cause I'm retaking, so it'll probably be a while for me.

Since your not doing EDP at UNC you might not here until September. Being out of state shouldn't hurt with stats like those, but UNC is heavy on clinical exp, hands on stuff. Secondies are computer based, but you have to print them off and mail. Expect to here in the next month and then interview October, maybe early November. Good luck, but GPA/MCAT 4.0/39 shouldn't hurt too much, next time do more practice tests 😉
Sally, maybe we can purchase points off this guy, plenty to spare.

So, Im an undergrad at UNC right now and after wondering when secondaries were gonna come out for a couple weeks, I took it on myself to go ahead and ask Ms. Alston in the admissions office.

She was really nice about it, and let me know that they would be reviewing EDP candidates at the beginning of next week and that they would start sending out secondaries from there. I guess they will get to other applicants soon after they get done with us early decision applicants.

Also, as mentioned earlier, the secondary will be sent to us online, but we have to send it back by snail mail. Despite that annoying point, Ms. Alston assures me that this will really facilitate the secondary process on all sides. (I was hoping to get some more info on what the secondary would be like, but she didn't want to say too much 😛 )

Anyway... yeah, thats that.

Yeah the online Sec seems to be a good idea .... will save admissions office some time that was wasted in sending out the paper app and also you can type and print better.........

Good Luck

So I met Bust today. I got to watch as he struggled through the process of preparing for another MCAT. 😱

good luck man 🙂

"got to watch as he STRUGGLED through the process"
haha, I don't think your struggling when you score a 35 on AAMC #7. 13/9/13

Sally, we have another peterock here.

Way to go, Bust! Thirteens are really awesome. I haven't actually taken any practice tests yet, I've been doing EK's 1001 questions and trying to familiarize myself with the difficult concepts. I'll be happy to get 10's on the real thing. You are gonna rock it on Saturday! :luck:

Another peterock? Nah, I don't think pete would like to hear anyone say that. But we'll see as the year unfolds. 😛

Maybe I"ll give AAMC #7 a try. . .

Just wanted to bump this one up.

(Secondaries should be going out to EDP's soon and I wanna see if anyone posts about it here! 😛 )

Your joking right. Sally, I don't understand, where's the "lotta game?"
🙁

Hey all. I'm applying to Wake, submitting in a day or two (late I know, but what are you gonna do?). It is the only NC school I can stand, being from MD and all 😉. Glad to be in the thread!

Welcome to our humble thread! Just a bit of advice: don't tell your interviewers at Wake that you want to go there because "it is the only NC school you can stand!" 😛

Bust, I don't get it. . . 😕

I was actually referring to UNC's secondary, which is perturbing me with its lateness. They don't get any kind of special award for being the last med school to give out secondaries, so they might as well go ahead and send it.

Yeah, I did figure that part out. I just didn't know what Bust was referring to about "where's the LottaGame?"

But I've only gotten a third of secondaries from the schools I've applied to this year. However, this may be because I'm an August MCATer.

How about a cheesecake and tequilla party Saturday night, Bust? via sdn, of course. I'm helping a friend move after MCAT, but I should be home sometime and will definitely be on sdn. Good luck on Saturday, Bust! Let's hope we both score double digits in each section! :luck:

Yeah good luck you guys. Just remember, relax, don't stress, and WHATEVER you do, NEVER NEVER ......................

Hello everyone,
I see some familiar faces here. 🙂 I'm a reapplicant and just graduated a few months ago. I am applying to all NC schools and some East Coast schools. Just got rejected by WF and in the process of submitting ECU secondary. Waiting to hear for secondary from UNC. I also want to apply to the MPH program at UNC as a backup plan. Has anyone done this? Best of wishes.

Welcome, confuse!

Bust and I are here, applying again as well. Sorry about Wake! A lot sdners have been pre-sec rejected by them, and I'm sure I will be once my Aug. MCAT scores come back in two months!

I haven't applied UNC MPH, so I can't comment on that. Sorry. But welcome to our humble thread!

Just got a email from UNC saying they received my application from AMCAs.. anyone else? Thought it was a secondary and got excited but nope.....is this what they did last year?

Same here...just received AMCAS app confirmation. Has anyone received secondary for UNC? If so, how long did it take since you received the AMCAS confirmation from UNC?

BOBODR said:

Yep. I too was excited to open it (thinking it was a secondary.) Oh, well. At least its not a rejection! 😛

I got the letter from UNC today as well and was wondering if any out of staters who applied last year have a rough idea of how long it takes for them to send secondaries/rejections. I was hoping to have all my secondaries done before work started, but it looks like that might not happen!

p.s. - Mustang Sally, sweet ride. I had a '01 gt vert, silver/black top. That was my baby. Until I sold it.

Last year UNC did all their application stuff through snail mail, so I got a one-page letter in the fall saying they'd received my application, and it would be reviewed and I would be contacted for secondary/interview if I qualified. I was an August MCATer, so I got this letter in September I think, and got my secondary in November, interviewed in January, and heard I was rejected late April.

I was excited to see the attachment in my email too, and then disappointed to see it wasn't a secondary. But our time will come, so just wait, guys. If there's one thing I learned going through this process last year, it's that UNC takes their time reviewing applicants, so you sometimes have to wait longer than you want to. I think they will be faster this year since some things are being done via email, but we will see.

Thanks, Tigerstang. I love my baby too, but am considering selling it too. It's not very practical, and I had the opportunity to drive an '05 Mustang over the weekend. Very nice ride! I'm sorry you had to sell yours. 🙁

UNC, you cocktease! 😡

Just when I thought the long-awaited secondary had arrived, they slapped this bad boy in my inbox.

Yargh.

I happened to be around the admissions office yesterday, and they told me that they are starting the process of sending out secondaries via email this week!

EDP applicants will hear first and then they will move on to others. The wait shouldn't be much longer! 😱

AHHHHHHHH!

Hurry up UNC!

Does anyone know what percentage of people get secondaries (secondaries=interviews, right?) typically? I'm sure out of state is a much lower percentage, so does anyone know that?

I got an email interview invite this afternoon from ECU. Anyone else? 😀

According to my MSAR, for the 2004-2005 first year class,

755 Residents applied, 436 were interviewed, and 136 matriculated.
2092 Non residents applied, 91 were interviewed, and 24 matriculated.

Way to go, Dave! Let's hope for many more.

If 91 were interviewed and 24 matriculated, they must have accepted about half of the OOS interviewees. I'm kind of excited now, I'll either get rejected pre-secondary or know that I have a pretty good shot by the time I go for an interview. At least UNC doesn't play any games. I'm a big fan of huge pre-secondary cuts.
