Last monday in MARCHHHHH, i guess everyone should be getting pretty nervous about right now, well atleast ppl like me who have NOOOOOO acceptances yett 😡 , but anyways just wanted to wish everyone goodluck for monday, hopefully they'll have a meeting, but im sure they probably wont make most of their final decisions to April.
Goodluck,
kevin p.

umm i am 99.99% sure the class is full and the next meeting wont be until next Monday and it will only be to decide who is WL and who is rejected. I mean hope is ok at this point but lets be realistic....

I am with you in the no acceptances group, Kevin. Guess I'll probably see you around the message board next year?

What is everyone doing next yr who doesnt have an acceptance?

I am going to start full time at the lab where I am currently work part-timer. I finish my Masters at the end of June, so I guess I will start up the old AMCAS in July and spend the next year researching/reading SDN. What about you Bobodr?

I need to get a research job, preferably doing something beyond autoclaving and making buffers. I'm pessimistic about the availability of any meaningful paid positions for someone with my background. If that doesn't work out, who knows, I'm probably just SOL.

Ideally I'll also incorporate EMT certification, shadowing, volunteering, and filling out 30+ secondaries, along with at least a dozen interviews. This is going to be a fun and leisurely year off 👎 .

Dr Giggles, your waitlist looks solid, WashU might be tough but I'd bet they will have the largest movement, Wakeforest and Ohio state also have a lot of movement.
For next year, please stop punching your interviewers, for god's sake I have a 32/3.76, decent but a 38/3.89 😱 should put you in the running everywhere.
If your serious about ECs I know some labs and clinics that would love a smart and hard working person, PM.
For everyone else, August MCAT and more ECs, the lab/clinic stuff applies to all 😀

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I think Wash U overfills its class to a slight extent, so I'm feeling slightly more optimistic about Wake Forest and OSU. As for my interviewers, I thought I had a good rapport with most of them, but now I really wouldn't mind dishing a few haymakers  .

I really appreciate your help and will definitely send a PM shortly.

you guys are being too pessimistic, unc just accepted people last monday who interviewed in october, there has to be some more seats open. also, just about every school is making final decisions, so some people might withdraw too, opening more spaces. And hopefully wake will accept quite a few off the waitlist, i think the interviewer said that over half of their class is filled from the waitlist, and last time i talked to wake forest, they said their waitlist usually doesnt move till mid-May. SO hopefully we'll get some good news in the near future, otherwise its back to the books anyways, so might as well keep the hope alive to delay the inevitable hourssssss at the library restudying for the mcat 😡 .

Bobodr, I think you are right about the class being filled. I interviewed in mid-February and am holding a shred of hope that I still might hear something from UNC. But after going through the posts in last years thread, March 20th or 21st was about the end of the acceptances. Everyone kept waiting for a big batch of acceptances to come out in early April, but the last of the decisions were for waitlists and rejections. I don't want to be pessimistic and am really hoping I am wrong. Of course, everything is not necessarily the same from one year to the next, but does anyone a part of this process last year want to weigh in? Sally, bust, seethrew???

It's tempting to be pessimistic, but after going through so much and waiting for so long, keep the hope alive for at least a few more weeks. Even if the class is "full," (which I doubt), there will definitely be movement in May when people have to give up multiple acceptances.

Relax, guys! We're in the home stretch now, and you will hear something definitive in the next few weeks. I think there are still acceptances to be had, and probably quite a few waitlists too.

I suspect that since UNC has said they're behind most of this year, they're probably behind in getting the class filled as well.

I'm posting from the Holiday Inn Express in Greenville this morning. Interviewing today for the summer program for future doctors. 😀

Lots of luck and patience to you all! :luck:

first off by march 30th they are suppose to have offered enough spots to fill the class. (AAMC guideline)

second off they are saying "they dont know if the class is filled". In previous callings they always said it wasnt and knew the exact % that was open. they say i dont know because they dont wanna make people cry on the phone.

there is one meeting left and its for WL/rejections, I know we all hope that its not the case but it is. Some people do get in in May as Sally said but you have to make the WL to have that opportunity.

Someone who also talked to their interviewer after being accepted recently was even told the class is filled and that she should be happy she got in because it was so competitive this year. (echo'd by someone earlier on this thread)

I am not sure what I am going to do next year for those who asked. This was my second time applying with no success. I do get tired after a while of the emotional and financial drain. I will either do the G-town SMP or possibly cinci's or just give up and find another field I am interested in. Perhaps become a sports journalist or something....

Its nice to be asked! They are likely full... I went through this mind war they put you through last year. They are probably filling out waitlists and rejections. As I stated before the WL will likely move more this year, I personally know 10 people thinking other ways and I'm not that popular. If you get rejected ask to meet with Dr Hoole and email your interviewers, I am a reapplicant and its been 180 from last year with a few changes, IF YOU NEED ADVICE PM me. If you are WL I wrote a page on that a couple months a go I'll try to find it. A short statement, from muh digging: I believe they have a 3 tier WL of instaters, 15 per tier. I believe most years they get to the 15 mark. I was in the top last year, I believe, but didn't get in. Last year the WLs across the nation were slow do to economics, people were choosing cheaper schools, UNC is very cheap instate. I know three people taking UNC over Duke last year.... :luck:

Can anyone speculate on whether Wake's class is full yet? When it is full, will they send out rejections and new waitlist notifications? Thanks.

I am getting drunk every weekend. Seriously though, what should we do to improve our chances should we not be successful this year. It would be really helpful to get feedback from people who got in on their second/third try. I am planning the following, UNC-or-BUST and others please comment.

1. Maintain full-time job - kind of wish I could get a different job where I will strictly work 8-5 and no weekend/weeknights.

2. Re-take MCAT in August and try to get 30+

3. Take additional classes in summer and Fall sessions. (Hoping to finish 3 classes).

4. Continue shadowing a primary care physician, continue working on my dialysis center project (We are trying to establish a non-profit hemodialysis center in a poor country where the government is Freaked up). Use the right F word there.

5. I like tutoring math. So, I am hoping to do some of that as a volunteer.

Anything else I should do? I feel like my EC's were okay, my LORs were good too. I can't change my undergrad GPA. Too frustrating - it was 8 years ago. And I feel more energetic and dynamic now than I felt when I was an undergrad.

Best wishes all. I hope we don't have to re-apply.
S.

UNC-or-BUST and others please comment.

1. Maintain full-time job - kind of wish I could get a different job where I will strictly work 8-5 and no weekend/weeknights.
Jobs are good, flexibility to handle interviews is a must.

2. Re-take MCAT in August and try to get 30+
Thats what I did, 29 first cycle 32 second cycle. I believe I could have done better but I graduated in three years thus had to take 4 classes last summer to finish, 3years and a summer...? Kaplan was great but $1300 for the class which was nice to have everything spoon fed. But their resources are clutch, 15 practice tests and tons of sectional work. If you don't have the cash I would download the complete topics sheet, 25-28 pages, from MCAT at AMAC.org. I just took a hundred sheets of lined paper and explained each topic, took three weeks but I knew everything, I review what I wrote the next morning. I wish I would have taken more practice tests and wouldn't have moved in with a crazy friend but no complaints... The practice tests are where you get points. Review then practice test every Saturday until the test, stay at the library for the whole 8 hours :scared:

3. Take additional classes in summer and Fall sessions. (Hoping to finish 3 classes).
Take classes at UNC is possible, I don't think they respect non-top 25 colleges too much, I heard a lot about people being told to take classes at UNC, even if they had 3.7+ GPAs at UNC-A, UNC-W, etc... undergraduate classes though, they don't care about the grad ones unless your getting a master's

4. Continue shadowing a primary care physician, continue working on my dialysis center project (We are trying to establish a non-profit hemodialysis center in a poor country where the government is Freaked up). Use the right F word there.
I might chill on the shadowing, I spent a year at an ER, really boring and that was more than enough, maybe an hour or so here or there but don't waste your time, use that time for the MCAT or research

5. I like tutoring math. So, I am hoping to do some of that as a volunteer.
Again, volunteering is great but at a certain point, 3+ hours a week your wasting time, take some classes this summer. At UNC take: summer session 1, BIOL 121, it is neurobiology, you learn a lot but the Jenni is amazing I learn more in her class than I did in most full semester stuff. It will fill up so schedule NOW. It will bump the GPA, its not hard to pull an A, she is very straight forward!

LORs are built in research, volunteering, shadowing, work... you will need new ones so get started now. I can suggest research positions, just PM me. BOB... I will PM you back in a bit!!!

Good Luck, questions PM...

"Take classes at UNC is possible, I don't think they respect non-top 25 colleges too much"

then they wouldnt respect themselves as according to US news wake and chapell hill are tied at 28. 🙂

How often does the ECU adcom meet, and when can we expect to hear from them?

Thanks everyone.

Taking classes at UNC is not possible for me unless it was a 8am class. I work in the Centennial campus of NC State and its pretty convenient for me to drive to the main campus for class and then come right back to work.

But I would think UNC and NCSU are pretty similar in terms of departments, student/faculty quality etc. NCSU is technically a campus of UNC.

S.

I agree, this is from the experiences I have gained through others.
But case in point I went to NCSU freshman year: 4.3 GPA, they do give A+
at UNC my GPA was 3.65

UNC is harder... my Ochem class with Bumgardner, 42% As 40% Bs
I took both O-Chems at NCSU, one after I left b/c I'm smart enough to know that 15% As at UNC < 42% at State

I hate being right, oh wait no I don't 😛

Haha, you cant honestly compare bumgardner to unc, her grade distribution is a joke. thats for the people who dont really need ochem for their career, just trying to pass it for their major. Brown is the real ochem teacher for state, try him, i promise you wont think youre too smart after that.

Not to drag this too far... but as you may already know, Bumgardner is a huge exception. His grading is renowned at NCSU. I took Org. I with Wahl and Org. II with Dr. Sandberg. Org II is my fav. course so far. I am actually glad I didn't take Org. II with Bumgardner - no offense prof..I am sure you are a wonderful person.

You might be totally right about UNC/NCSU grading disparity. But to use Bumgardner's grading to represent NCSU grading is a bit unfair.

I will PM you sometime with specific things that I would love to get some feedback. I hope you won't mind.

The person that I currently work for at UNC-Chapel Hill is going to be looking for person to fill my position when I leave this summer. Its a research technician position with emphasis on clinical research. You will get great clinical experience and the PI is accommodating with applyign to medical school.

Experience with databases (Access) is a must along with basic chemistry/biology lab skills.

PM me if you want more information. The position has not been listed on the UNC-HR site but will be in the next few weeks.

My experience taking classes at both State and UNC is that they are indeed harder at UNC. UNC science courses especially seemed geared towards challenging the students rather than teaching. I think some profs get a kick out of requiring $500 worth of books etc and emailing students everyday with some new assignment. All that being said, I felt like I actually learned the material better in courses I took at State. My prof wasn't trying to prove her academic prowess by slamming us with unnecessary work; she was there to teach and was enthusiastic about it. So it was easier for students to grasp the concepts and get help, thus there were more A's and B's.

I haven't attended either school, but the above comment doesn't surprise me. I heard a NCSU chemical education professor speak at Clemson and she thoroughly impressed me. Their focus truly seems to be making the learning process as EFFECTIVE as possible. Just some anecdotal evidence.

I think he means undergrad rankings.

Woah, wolfpack party in the house here. I also had Dr. Sandberg for Organic II and it was the best class I've ever taken.

As to whether Carolina or State is harder, who cares as long as you learn what you set out to learn?

I also took O-chem 2 with Karen and I had her husband for anatomy in high school, not that matters..., but I would have left State with a 4.0 GPA but at UNC Chapel Hill I worked harder, though not at full, and didn't get close to a 4.0. There schools are two to different learning environments, I felt I learned more at State too but I hope schools realize that my GPA drop was from being at different schools and not laziness

I just read my post, whoa... there should be a poll about State and UNC, I think across the board we might find State teaching more... curious how that works out.

This also why I want to get into Duke, State-->UNC-->Duke
the triple triangle!

LOL - I called UNC today and was told that it would be 2-3 weeks before everyone would know something certain about status.

Ah, UNC, you give the run-around like no other. I love how you can call one day and get a completely different answer and tone of voice the next time. And yet, you still know nothing more ... sigh ... good times.

/still have a shred of hope that I can keep my rental place and walk to medical school at UNC next year

They are clearly busy using our secondary money for planning and executing the master landscaping plan for the medical school at this point. One interviewee = one azalea or small shrub... several interviewees = Japanese maple or other decorative tree. All the trees help pacify UNC student protestors who easily become distracted because they just want to hug them. Good landscaping is also know to be impervious to the thousand of acapella groups at UNC (basically you really have to go to a sparse location if you want to force people to hear you sing poorly without a background track)... if only the Pit had more than two trees.

Hey guys,
I called UNC monday, they told me that there were still seats available for the class, but she made it sound like very few, just in my opinion. But she told me everyone would know something by april 15th, haha just another date, which will probably be pushed back again, but who knows. Also she said that the review committee was going to meet pretty regularly for the next week and a half (this was monday 3/27), and they still had about 300 applicants to make decisions on still, and they werent going to send out decisions until decisions on all of the 300 remaining applicants were made. So hopefully you were right about the end of next week, that would be alot nicer than 3 weeks from now. But ya never know.
goodluck,

Kevin, the update is appreciated. You must be pretty charming....this is more info than anyone has gotten out of the admissions office in a while. Even if there are only a "very few" seats left, that's better than I was thinking. Good luck everyone.

I talked to admissions on the phone today and they said that everyone would know in two weeks.

Thats great news. 300 spots!!! There should be more acceptances then, they would set all those interviews without leaving spots open.

GOOD LUCK, I guess calls could come at anytime :luck: :luck: :luck:

Well she said they had 300 people to make decisions on still, that probably meant the people they have overlooked earlier as well, deciding whether to waitlist or reject, but you never know. Hey unc-or-bust, did you get accepted to UNC already? and if so when did you interview? just curious.

Thanks for the information. I'm sure there is one hell of a game of darts going on at the admissions office for making the final decisions. They have to lose some weight after eating all those Panera Bread sandwiches and cookies.

According to last year's thread, decisions were received at variable times from mid- to late-April (probably thanks to the consistency of the United States Postal Service). (scroll down midway: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=160968&page=98&pp=25)

In essence, the admissions office is doing exactly what the airlines do at the airport before they cancel your flight. So many different stories are coming from them (just like the airlines changing your gate, pushing back depature times, and only finally telling you your flight has been cancelled when you are too tired to riot due to excess drinking at the airport's condensed-size but still lovable national franchise restaurant). However, this is a necessary evil given the nature of the process. You can't blame them for trying to select the best possible class out of the applicant pool.

The decisions will eventually come, though, and there is nothing more precious than finality in this process. 🙂 :luck:

Looks like we're all a bit fed up and frustrated with this whole process. So instead of simply bumping us out of the 4th page, I thought I'd share my frustration, which is slowly turning into disappointment. Lets keep our heads up though, anything is possible. All we got left is hope. Lets keep it alive.

Good attitude, Spartan. I am getting frustrated as well, but I guess we should keep a positive attitude for the last few weeks! Good luck everyone.

Just thought I'd throw a comment out to stir up some thought. Does anyone think there is a chance of phone calls tomorrow or is that just wishful thinking??

I don't think anyone's been definitively told that the class is full, so I think that means there's a chance, but I'm not banking on it.

I don't think they do calls for the last batch of decisions that go out, or at least they didn't do it last year as far as I remember. People were calling to find out their status, but if you didn't call you were notified by mail.

Lots and lots of luck! It won't be long now. . . :luck:

Lots and lots of luck! It won't be long now. . . :luck:

Hey mustangsally,
when you said people were calling to get their status, do you know if anyone actually got told what their status was, or do they pretty much tell you to wait for a letter. Didnt know if calling them now would be a good idea or not, or if they even tell you anything over the phone. It seems like they usually just tell you that a decision has been made or hasnt been made, and either way you will find out by mail. Also do you know if for this last batch of applicants did anyone recieve an accpetance letter and no phone call, or were the decisions mainly reject or waitlist?
Thanks,
Kevin P.
