I'm waiting on 6 schools! TEXAS A&M, UT Houston, VCU obviously, UIC, Loyola Stritch, and SIU. It's killing me 🙁
What about you?

5 schools. GW, VCU, EVMS, MUO and Tulane for me. I would be ecstatic to be accepted to any of them.

You've got a nice list of possibilities. I'm sure at least one will work out, and VCU sounds very likely. 👍 Are you a Texas or Illinois resident? I'm guessing Illinois if you interviewed at SIU.

Oh, and you can add a picture by clicking on "Quick Links", and then "Edit Avatar". Scroll down to browse for a picture on your computer to upload.

Thanks! I'm hoping for both of our sakes that having a high number of waitlists will correlate with acceptance!

That said, I have no idea if my political values will meld well with that of the students and faculty at VCU. I've been talking a lot with Dr Heldberg about these concerns, and she's been wonderful in putting me in touch with folks that can provide some perspective. I'd be curious to hear what other people think, though.

Alright, I swear that I'm not trying to drive this thread back into a political quagmire, but I'm honestly curious why this is such an issue for everyone who has posted so far on this topic. [Brief disclaimer: I am not trying to be a troll, nor make anyone feel like they can't post on whatever interests them in relation to VCU.] All disclaimers aside, I really don't understand why this matters. If you go to a school where lots of people (including faculty) disagree with you, doesn't that make your experience that much richer? Isn't it true that intellectual diversity makes academics so exciting and rewarding? And if you're intending to go into a very political field of medicine, wouldn't it in the end be more satisfying to go to a school where you get experience educating others about your ideas and defending your ideas to others?

I have no desire to start a flame war, nor make anyone feel that they shouldn't post with any question they have relating to VCU, but I just don't understand why a liberal has to go to a liberal school and a conservative has to go to a conservative school. Being a subscriber of a less than common political philosophy, I've gone through my entire educational career interacting with people who don't agree with me, and I love the debates that I wander into because of it.

Three cheers for Rodney the Ram and long live MCV.

Pure curiosity, trying to get the feel for Virginia is like in general. I've only been there once -- for the interview. It wouldn't make me like VCU more or less whether it's slightly liberal or conservative. I'm from a very liberal place so if I moved to a very conservative state, it would probably be a bit of a shock in the beginning though I totally don't mind when the opinions of others differ from mine. Makes things interesting.

Ah. I can definitely understand that.

I made the move from California to Virginia last June and it was much less of a shock than I expected. For starters, university towns tend to have a fair amount of intellectual diversity. In addition, though VA consistently swings to the Republicans in presidential elections it has a Democratic governor. That alone should show you that the state is less homogenous than it first appears.

bc a school's political (or even religious) orientation has a way of manifesting itself in every facet of its program, from curriculum to clinical/research initiatives. Also programs with an assumed orientation tend to draw students of similar perspectives, and Madi while you may see this as enriching the educational arena, others see this as a possible detriment to their ambitions...to each his own

If a school's orientation manifests itself in the curriculum, that certainly is an issue. However, I see it as a seperate issue than whether the majority of the people at a school swing one way or another.

You will not have to worry about politics playing any role in how you are taught or what you are taught at VCU. The student body, like in most academic institutions, is going to be more liberal that the surrounding areas. No different at VCU.

Richmond is a pretty conservative compared to say, Berkley, but I think you'll have no problem making the adjustment. I doubt anyone would have proplems for being a liberal or conservative provided you dont try to shove your political views down someone else's throat. That tends to piss people off.

The question is, who will be the first to post on pg 100

I haven't posted on the political debate issue because I don't feel I have much new to add. However, I will commed Shyrem for teaching her children to see people as individuals. Having grown up in a small North Carolina town, I see that as a rare virtue.

Also, I look forward to going to VCU (please, please!) so much more now that I know I will be joined by intelligent people willing to debate an issue. And even if we don't end up in agreement, we can still give the other person the respect they deserve. I've found that trait to be all too rare. Y'all rock!!! 😀

Not to be anal, but it's Berkeley. Also, I think being in the environment that you feel comfortable in should be a major consideration. I think it is alright to let others know about your political orientation because it is a part of who you are. In other words, DO ASK, DO TELL!

In my experience, someone 'letting you know' about thier political orientation does so under the guise of a polite discussion. In actuality it seems to come out as, "Hey I think your views are stupid let me tell you why my views are better than yours." Whether conservative (holier than thou) or liberal (smarter than thou) 'they' always seem to think they know better than you, unless of course you completely agree with them.

I am sick of 30 minute lectures from idiots in bars. Just shut up and drink your beer.

Got my response from Dr. H today: "your position is quite strong and I am highly hopeful that you will hear from us sometime this spring." when does spring end again?

that very much what she told me. But she said I should hear from them before June.

Good for you! Are you out of state or in-state?

Holy crap I can't believe how close we are to page 100

😡 Page 2?!?!! When we're so close to reaching the elusive page 100? For shame fellow VCU Centralers for shame

We just need more people to get accepted from the thread to spark a little conversation.
🙂

I wish they could just tell you the rank on the waitlist. Why are they (all schools) so secretive about this information. We put our lives into that application and pay them money to look at it - I feel like we sort of have the right to know where we stand.

better yet, it would be great if they put your real time waitlist ranking up on the status page. so that way you can watch yourself get closer and closer to the top of the waitlist as people withdraw. i don't think this would be any less stressfu/anxiety inducingl...but at least its nice to know where you stand.

No one would ever leave the status screen, life would stop for 200+ people in the world.

LoL... it's interesting how every drunk guy has a political agenda (not always informed or makes sense, but its an agenda anyway). I can understand where you are coming from. I think I would be sick of their ramble as well. But, I just don't like people telling others to "keep their own business/political agenda to themselves". To me, it is just an excuse for the closed minded to keep the society at the status quo and prevent them from having to deal with issues...

Actually, it looks like Portuguese withdrew his acceptance from VCU in April. Whether true or not, I don't know. But he seems a bit... bitter about it.

Perhaps he needs to be reminded of what even a 5 year old learns: If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

Sad that my children know that rule, yet a soon-to-be med student does not. *sigh*

Much congratulations to you all! 👍 I personally thought that sdn would explode or something to that effect.
This has to be close to some type of record or something but there is still work to do. The thread on the Florida school is already up to 117. With a little hard work and endless rambling I think you can surpass them too!

Looks like we have ourselves a new challenge. Bring it on, Florida!!

That's true. It's very impressive that you could even come close compared to a thread for about 6 (totally guessing on that #) schools. After the May 15th date comes and goes I don't think this thread will have any problem setting some kind of all-time record! 👍

This thread already has over 20,000 more views than the other thread anyway so it's definitely the most popular one!

we rock! okay, time for everyone on here to get off the waitlst. now. come on Dr. H, you know you love all of us!!

Good job doctors, all around!

.... sweetpea...

....lemme go ahead and post on pg 100.... :luck: lol

WHERES THE LOVE DR H. wheres the love....

yeah! page 100, i knew you guys could do it! :luck:

Very well. I'll take your advice and I will not comment on your kids or your age.

In fact, I did withdraw. VCU is a great school and it was an exceptionally difficult decision for me. I was just having some fun with my earlier post. Good luck to all of you.

Yay for page 100. Sad that the first post on the page was bashing VCU, but we're here! And 4 days early. 🙂

We definitely need to beat the Florida thread.

This thread is superior to the Florida thread in just about every way.

What's to comment about? I believe she's only 34, which is still very young and rockin', and her kids are adorable! 😀

I'm so proud of you guys. I'm a freakin prophet. I saw this day many moons ago.
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=3440094&postcount=1376

That was 44 pages ago. They called me crazy but I knew you could do it. Even without the meaningless ranter I brought to the thread. I truly am not worthy to be posting here so I'll leave. Keep up the good work. I'm getting excited for this fall. Keep the faith everyone.

btw, I still love you shy, cav, gd, inverted, viz, madi, tac etc etc etc. Keep your chin up.

Guys, guys, this is my 100th post on page 100. I was saving it, because I am a big big dork.

Yay! I just got in off the waitlist. Now I have to decide between Drexel and VCU in five days, not that I'm complaining!

Does anyone know what they do about residency if your spouse works full time in VA?

Congrats, pseudoknot! I have no idea about your question, but I just dropped my acceptance from Drexel in favor of VCU. Obviously, I am biased in favor of VCU, but if you want to throw around some thoughts, let me know!
