2007-2008 Secondary Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oooh that is NICE. I was going to send that form in myself to interfolio. That would save me time if we don't have to send it in!

i asked them if they accept confidencial lors thru interfolio and they replied that they do....nothing about the form in their reply what so ever.
so i guess no cover sheet neccessary but i will give em a call tomorow just to make sure🙂
i always tripple check everything...sort of paranoia:laugh:

Speaking of paranoia. I am freaked out if I didnt copy/paste my entire essay into the LECOMs application. When I proofread, I did it in microsoft, then pasted into the correct essay spot on the secondaries. Now Im freaked out that I didnt paste it all, because it went on the second page. Now I will never know. Im sure I did it right, but I cant remember, plus the pre-med in me needs something to worry about. BTW, my file is complete at DCOM, yaay.

i just wrote my essays for DCOM and wait for the good soul to read them and correct it.
I hope to sent it out tomorow...but then i am still waiting on my DO lor...i am really paranoid...it's only july but i wish i was done already😎

I'm using a virtualeval program through my school where I had to sign waivers for that program. Will this also work for LECOM? I really don't want to have to go back and hassle my letter writers more.

Also, I got my MCAT scores on Friday and had them sent to AACOMAS. Since I've already been processed, how do the schools get my scores and how long does it take?

Thanks in advance for any responses!!

Dr. Kicia, that commercial is very exquisite!!

i emailed them with exact same question...i also released my scores on friday and the THx system was saying the request was complete...so i asked aacomas how long till they send it to schools and it looks like it will take 24 more hrs for them to update my file and then they mail out updates weakly which i was told is anywhere between wed-frid.
so i guess probobly next week to 10 days till the schools get hte scores.
hope that helps🙂

p.s glad you liked the comercial😀

just finished DMUs. Got some rough drafts goin for other schools. I'm trying to write them like my PS and it is very frustrating. Why can't they all just be like DMU?

I got my drafts done for the essays " What personal qualities do you have that will benifit the osteopathic profession." and "in your own life what experiences and people have inlfuenced you to become a DO". I got these essays sounding good I think. But the only prompts that were near this were DCOM and LECOMS. I hope the rest are like that, so I can just plug and chug the essays, instead of starting from scratch again. hhmmm UNECOM. 😉

what is the UNECOM's essay prompt?

I was filling out some secondaries and wondering how long you guys made the essays on the secondary? For example how long would your response be to "Why did you choose to become an osteopathic physician?" Just trying to get a count. dont want to make it too long or too short.

For me, it really depends on how many prompts there are. If there are more than one, then I make them about half a page or less. If there is only one, then I make the essay about 3/4 a page.

good to know! i was going to make them a page each.😛

what is the UNECOM's essay prompt?

Note: not word for word. But something along the lines of

"describe the type of physician you want to become and how UNECOM can help you acheive this goal"

" Describe any experiences you have had with UNECOM alumni, current students faculty/staff etc.. and how these experiences influenced you to apply to UNECOM."

"Describe clinical experiences and community involvement that you have had" (volunteering etc...

they are kidding, right?🙄😱😱😱

oh well... i guess you just saved me $$$😀

yeah i think 500 word limits are typical. if i were on the admissions committee and had to look at thousands of essays, i would pay more attention to the short and sweet ones. i say, they can ask me the details at the interview, cause i'm much sweeter in person 😉

thats a good idea... plus it may give you a heads up on what they are going to ask you in the interviews, thus you can prep for them.

In the additional information section of secondaries... Do you think it is a good idea to mention your strong interest in the school (if this is not a prompt already)?

I think that is a very good idea, except I would only add one or two sentences about your affinity towards their school at the end. This way they know you are really interested in their school specifically and not using a generic essay. Just make sure everything flows together and you are golden.

That's 500 words per essay question right? Not the whole secondary? 😳

In the LECOM secondary, the second question says: "Explain or describe any clinical and/or health related experiences you have had, including extracurricular school and community activities."

Does that include extra curricular activities and community activites that aren't clinical and health related?

Any word for anybody from ATSU kirksville or arizona? On their website it indicates that all applicants who have achieved greater than a 2.75 will receive a secondary, and that this secondary is sent out the day the AACOMAS app is received. Mine sent out on 6/18 and I have a 3.52 science, 3.5 overall. What gives? Is is by snail-mail?

500 words per essay. Wouldn't that be fun if they gave a word count for the entire application? While they are at it, mine as well make us perform triple axial back hand springs over the dean's head at the interview.

LECOM only wants to know health related activities (ie shadowing, volunteering in a hospital, clinic, hospice, elderly home etc.) pretty much anything involving health. They want to know how much clinical exposure you have. They could see all the other stuff in your primary if they wish. Good luck:luck:

They send an email asking you to fill out their online secondary. You could start filling it out once they put it up on their website. I don't know when that would be.

Kicia, don't let this one kick you off UNE if you wanted to apply there. I said I had known someone before they went to UNE but hadn't spoken to them since. I also said I had internet contact with unknown anonymous posters on a pre-med forum who claimed to be students at UNE (and I said they had normal gripes about studying, administration, etc, but seemed to love it there). I got in.

And, btw, *I* go to UNECOM, so there. You now have had "contact" with a student at UNECOM. 😀

:laugh:ok...then ...i will say i know ShyRem from SDN😍
I always had UNE in mind but i got really scared off by this whole UNE connection essay (mine will be like two lines long LOL)...i am also a little scared that with my sucky MCAT and being not from their prefered area i have really a long shot...but hey... i guess 50 bucks is worth giving it a try😀

Kicia, I hope I see you this next year at an interview.

And for everyone applying this year, you *never* know unless you try. We have people in my class with MCATs from 19 to 34. GPAs from 2.8 to 4.0. All races, from every corner in the country and more than a few different countries across the world. I'm sure UNE isn't unique in this -- there is a mix of every size, shape, and type of MCAT, GPA, race, etc. in every med school in the US. And if you count yourself out just because you don't have a "connection" because you think your grades/MCAT are "too low" then YOU are the one saying No. I said to myself when I applied that I was going to make THEM say no... I wasn't going to sell myself short. Frankly, my total GPA wasn't great (I didn't care about school 20 years ago), and my MCAT didn't break 30. I'm not a great writer, but I write from the heart, and I mean what I say in person. It showed enough to get offered an interview at MSUCOM as an OOS applicant.

Don't sell yourselves short. You never know unless you try.

Any word on CCOM or ATSU Kirksville yet?

I actually wrote that I had made contact with UNECOM students through SDN. To be honest, I was actually referring to my PMs with ShyRem 😉 ShyRem will tell you this too, but be honest with them. If you've had some in depth contact with a student through some PMs, say so, but if you've never communicated with someone beyond a vague post, be honest about it.

Shyrem,
Would you mind typing a few lines to me too

My contact with students at UNECOM is limited even though I spent my undergrad years 40 minutes away.

😀awsome...that is why we gotta love these boards.
so did you got into UNE?

I am still waiting on KCOM as well as KCUMB's secondary.

The one thing that I am really nervous about is that I am short on clinical experience with only six months of volunteering in the Emergency Department and some shadowing. With a full time job, two kids, and working on my master's, it was hard to fit everything in. I have seven years of research experience which I hope will mean something. For three and a half of those years, I was working at a clinical pharmaceutical research company but I worked in the lab which was on the floor above the clinic. Should I mention this at all as a clinical aside or just go with the meager volunteering and shadowing on the LECOM secondary?

i'd mention it...just sell yourself as much as possible...i mean i even wrote about my own stay in the hospital and how i used to go with my mom (who was a nusre) to work and all...just write from your heart, thing syou feel were important and the ones you feel proud of🙂

Ok, I'll probably mention it then, at least briefly so I don't feel so inadequate.

I got a presecondary rejection from DMU as well. It kinda made me laugh when I got it. I live in CO too. I'm in Boulder. We should have a colorado "lets do our secondaries together" party.

Absolutely! Or at least we sould get together and drink to console eachother about our devistating rejections! 😛

In all seriousness though, if you ever want some help with secondaries (or feel like giving some!), or interview prep, etc. Just drop me a line!

Nate.

On the LMU secondary, it asks about US citizenship and I put yes.

Do I still put no for the "Do you currently have a visa?" question?

Are there any D.O. schools that don't send out a secondary invite (email or snail mail)? I know some are available online, but I was just wondering if any of them expect you to be proactive and fill it out with out the notification.

In addition, are there any D.O. schools that only send out secondaries to those they are going to interview?

were you the person who heard from ATSU?
i am kinda worried i didn't:scared:

No, I havent heard anything yet either. I posted that their website that all persons meeting initial criteria will immediately be sent the secondary info. I meet the criteria and havent heard anything yet.

I am worried about the PCOMs. I bet its sitting in my mail at my apt that I wont get to until friday night. 🙁

ATSU mesa said they send a secondary to everyone with a gpa of above a 2.75, but they're sending any for another month.

most send out secs...but LECOMs and DCOM are avaialable on line and you don't need to wait for the invite...just fill them out.

as far as i know NYCOM and WVSOM are the ones who require secs at the time of interview...so you get interview invite at those before seconday.
hope this helps

don't worry...diver you are rolling this cycle...it's not even mid july and you are done with quite a few secs👍
I am mailing in DCOM tomorow and LECOMs online tonight.
Still wating on my DO lor...i had to call him today to remind him to hurry up a little...i know...i am totally paranoid with being early...AACOMS mailed in my MCAT update to all schools today and i also received update on my status from DMU....
by the way i freaking love them😍
if i was to make a vote on best admissions stuff they would be right after DCOM...they respond to my emails in 3 minutes😱 yes 3 MINUTES!!!
I was scared at first because they emailed me that the only thing they are missing to review my file was MCAT so i emailed them that there is a LOR from DO comming (i really care about it because my DO is such an awsome guy and i know after a year of shadowing i will get a good letter from him).
So they imediatly emailed me back, updated all my stuff and everything😍😍😍

and same goes for DCOM 🙂love😀r.Leo...he probobly has enough of my emails by now:laugh:)
best of luck to you divy😀

Thanks, good luck to you too. That'd be pretty cool if we got accepted to the same school, then we could be frequent posters in the ----COM class of 2012 thread. lol

Just got the TOURONV secondary. SHIZA, it requires a 100 bucks with it. 🙁 I guess I'll look at it as an investment.

one question: Are you typing it out or hand writing it? Does anyone know what they prefer?
