Just wondering what ya'll think. I just started looking in the DO approach with advice from my pre-med advisor. What else do you think I need that I can get within the next couple of months? Also what schools should I definitely look into?

I'm not sure why you want to retake the MCAT, I mean 29 is pretty solid for DO school even with the 7 in PS. I dont want to deter you from retaking it if you think you can go up to 32+ and /or applying to MD schools. But I think from an MCAT standpoint your application is very good. You definitely need to jump on that DO letter ASAP because the earlier you apply the better your chances tend to be. If I would recommend fixing anything on your app it would be that GPA, but of course that is not a quick fix. Overall, just try to do your best at the interviews but it will be a little tougher because of that GPA especially at those schools that weigh the GPA more than the MCAT. Good luck!

I'm not sure why you want to retake the MCAT, I mean 29 is pretty solid for DO school even with the 7 in PS. okay, basically after every attempt (on practice CBTs by AAMC) i cant break 24.

from aamc 3-9, i've gotten 21-24. about 22-23 most of the time. today i just took the 9th one, and i got a 22 🙁

i dont know why i just cant break the 24 🙁 i'm really depressed. my scores for PS is 8-10, VR = 5-7, and BS = 7-8 (depending on how well i do on the OCHEM since it's all self taught). my strength is def in the PS.

rest of my application:

3.01 overall, 3.3 science, with a 2.4gpa first 2 years at a community college to a 3.65 at a 4 year unversity. so i have a super ^^ trend.

phsysics 1,2,3 = A, A, A
Bio = A, A-, A
Gen Chem = C, B, A-
Ochem = havent taken yet.
Calc 1, 2 = A , B+

the 3.65 is in all the upper div classes (BCPM too) while the 2.4 is in the general classes, theater arts, history, etc.

EC's = EMT for 2.5 years ( 1.5 years in the ER), voluntary organizational work, distinguised service award for saving a life while lifeguarding (was a lifeguard for 3 years), community service work, of the sort.

Good letters of Recs.

You should have a good chance for almost any D.O. school in the country. It is just a matter of where you want to go.

Okay, walked into my ochm final the other day with a 'B average... Got my overall grade several hrs. later at a d+. Obviously I am retaking the class, but my question is, will this hurt me, even though I am going to do much better this time around? I realize no excuses, however, I have been fighting with military deployment and have not been able to study and devote the time as I should. Will schools understand? I'd like to get feedback from others who have been in similiar circumstances and/or actually know what they are talking about.

The nice thing about applying to DO schools are that they do not factor in the first grade into your GPA. Sure it would have been better if you had gotten a B or higher, but no I don't think your totally screwed.

If this is Ochem I your talking about it puts you back a bit with Ochem II, but try to look at it on the bright side. Taking it a second time you will understand Orgo that much better and make it easier to get an A in orgo II and do well in the orgo sections of the MCAT.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. 🙁

Will it hurt you? Yes, it could hurt you. You can retake the class and perform better (read: retake it and get an A). There are two advantages that come to mind to retaking the class: 1) You prove your mastery of the subject; 2) Only your latest grade of a given class is used in AACOMAS GPA calculations. However, even though AACOM calculates your GPA using your latest grade of a given class, all your classes/grades are still listed. Some schools might take notice and invite you to address it, or something similar.

I've registered to retake in August. I'm just looking for some advice and opinions on whether this would be too soon to retake considering I would like to improve atleast four points.

I know this is a bit of an odd question but I could use some advice from people who have been accepted to schools already. I am going into my senior year in college. I decided pretty late that I wanted to be a doctor so I have only taken gen chem and gen bio. Not many post-bacc programs will accept me because I have already taken half the pre-req classes so I am going to taken orgo and physics at a state (cheaper) university after I graduate. I will also take the MCAT during this time. The thing is, I really dont want to wait two years after graduating in 2008 before I enter med school (assuming I can even get in). So I was thinking of applying to a few places the end of my senior year although I have not taken physics, orgo or the mcat. I have, however, taken gen chem, bio, calc, stats, and I am a double major in anthropology and public health. I am on the dean's list, have a lot of volunteer hours, am very involved in extracurriculars, have clinical experience, and I am shadowing a DO this summer. My first two years of college I did not do well academically for unique reasons which I plan to address in my personal statement. I have pulled up my cumulative GPA from a 2.7 to a 3.1 and if all goes well my last year...I believe that I can realistically graduate with a 3.3. Do you think that I should take the chance of applying at the end of my senior year on the hopes of a conditional acceptance (and of course I would take orgo, phys, and mcat before I matriculate into med school)? Or should I finish orgo, phys, and mcat and then apply at the end next year but then be forced to wait a whole other year? Any advice will help!

Is Touro in Cali. a good school?

Any other recommendations that I should check out?

You should be fine at most schools... have you shadowed a DO though? I think that's the only thing you would need extra

Touro in Cali is a good school I think, it's rotations are decent, but they've had pretty good match results the past few years.
they are changing their curriculum this year though so don't know much about that aspect.

As for your stats... I think they're ok, but just to be safe try to apply as early as possible.

I think you have a shot for any DO school in the country and for lower tier MD schools. If MD is your real goal, you could look into doing a 1 year special masters program in which you take 1st year med school courses and if you maintain a certain GPA you often get a chance either at the school where you did the SMP or somewhere else for an MD acceptance.

well I think it would be a waste of time to apply without those classes and the MCATs unless you could have them complete before next summer, you are talking about not having 16 of the credits needed plus the exam, most schools with allow you to apply wih 4 or 8 credits missing but not 16 and they will not look at you without the MCATs, and some schools require upper level courses too, I know this because I emailed each school because I am applying now and concurently taking one of the courses but everything else is completed as well as the MCAT, I am not sure what time frame you are talking about, but if you don't think you will have aleast two/three of those complete plus the MCAT by next summer then I would wait the extra year, take a master's program, and increase your GPA alittle, its not a bad one or anything but if you have a year off you might as well🙂

Well, your application profile looks pretty good with the exception of your MCAT score. If you want to broaden your chances and options, it would be good retake it.

Are you applying this cycle? If not, then it might be worth taking your time to study for a retake. You absolutely want to score higher on your retake. Therefore, you need to take the appropriate time to assess your core issues on the MCAT and to address them. You may need to change your fundamental study habits as well. I wouldn't retake until you have clear evidence which suggests that you will score significantly higher on average. You can gather evidence by taking lots of practice tests under realistic conditions and looking at the trend.

Meh, I think you should be fine. Your MCAT score is actually quite competitive for osteopathic medical schools. There's no problem there. On the other hand, your GPA is bit lower than average, but not really of huge concern. You may get asked at an interview to address areas where you may not have done so well academically, if such areas exist. All in all, however, I think you should do fine in the application process, at least on the osteopathic side. Play your cards well.

Nice MCAT score. 🙂 Actually, everything looks good to me. You are right that your GPA is a bit lower than average and your poorer early academic performance may be of some concern. However, you've done some academic rehabilitation and you've shown to some extent that you can perform well by averaging 3.7 in the past two years. I say go for it and apply broadly and early; see what happens. You may be asked during an interview to address your poorer early performance.

If it doesn't work out, additional post-baccalaureate undergraduate work, or an SMP may be indicated. However, if you play your cards right, I think you should do fine.

3.01 overall, 3.3 science, with a 2.4gpa first 2 years at a community college to a 3.65 at a 4 year unversity. so i have a super ^^ trend.

phsysics 1,2,3 = A, A, A
Bio = A, A-, A
Gen Chem = C, B, A-
Ochem = havent taken yet.
Calc 1, 2 = A , B+

the 3.65 is in all the upper div classes (BCPM too) while the 2.4 is in the general classes, theater arts, history, etc.

EC's = EMT for 2.5 years ( 1.5 years in the ER), voluntary organizational work, distinguised service award for saving a life while lifeguarding (was a lifeguard for 3 years), community service work, of the sort.

Good letters of Recs.


i applied to all 25 (but i wont be going to ohio, cause of their 5 year commitment for OOSers)

My Mcat is on july 24th, and i'm assuming, well, praying that i get atleast a 24. but if i get a 22 or 23, based on the rest of my application, how will i do?

Well, even though that it is largely a myth that doing well one area can offset another, I think a great MCAT score will do much to help you, since your GPA is low. However, since you aren't doing too well on your practice tests, I'd recommend waiting on the MCAT until you can score in the range you want, if reasonable. There's no need to rush things. You want to take the appropriate time do everything properly, no more, no less. My recommendation is to wait until after you've taken Organic Chemistry and work on that VR. Meanwhile, you can continue raising your GPA.

I plan on applying to tcom, nyit, ccom, pcom, oucom, and touro-harlem. Can I get into any of these? (oh yeah, I'm a TX resident)

The nice thing about applying to DO schools are that they do not factor in the first grade into your GPA. Sure it would have been better if you had gotten a B or higher, but no I don't think your totally screwed.

If this is Ochem I your talking about it puts you back a bit with Ochem II, but try to look at it on the bright side. Taking it a second time you will understand Orgo that much better and make it easier to get an A in orgo II and do well in the orgo sections of the MCAT.

Try to keep those grades up. Goodluck

I think you would be competitive if you can get that 30 on the MCAT and def can improve chances if you do increase your GPA... however I think you could get in with the GPA you have right now also.

It doesn't look good. You do have an upward trend but your gpa is not impressive. I'd say that you need to shoot for a 30 on the MCAT.

I didn't think it was too bad. You have a good upward trend, and your finals ended up above 3.0. You will need a solid MCAT score, but your gpa is okay. A little low, but not horrible.

there's some good posts in there addressing this. To sum it all up though, there's no real answer to this question. It really depends on a number of factors including EC, Research, LOR, Interview, etc...

Seriously?? Quit being lazy. Buckle down & study. When some of us took the MCAT it was offered twice a year. Now you have the opportunity to study until you are ready & take it pretty much at your leisure. Work your a$$ off...plain & simple. Trust me, it doesn't get any easier from here on out...

It's been at least 6 weeks since we've had one of this asinine threads where someone blatantly comes in here & asks what is the minimum amount of work they can do.

It is quite possible that a person can get into an allopath program and not into an osteopath program. I know people who got in the 30's and did not get into the DO school that I got into, yet I also know people who scored in the 20's and got into MD programs. Let go of the illusion and good luck!!!

i mean adcoms are people too, they HAVE to understand that getting C's in theatre arts and history shouldnt count and A's in physics + bio should.

clearly i'm not being lazy if i've already studied for it twice. it's not a matter of not studying enough...it's a matter of not doing well after working hard. i'm looking for advice...not discouragement...way to help out
