I wouldn't even know where to begin...
You think my stats are good enough to pass without a DO LOR?

I don't know any DO's at all, do I just thumb through the yellow pages and call and ask if I could shadow. I think that's kind of wierd... I do have a LOR from an MD because I knew the MD... You think the MD LOR without a DO LOR will hurt me?
Plus, I have a PreMed Committee at my school so they send out one generalized LOR... Gah. med school headaches... 🙁

yellow pages are a great way to start looking for a D.O. or look o the AOA website. Youre stats are really good so that might help. I would get a letter from a D.O. to ensure that you will get an interview and acceptance.

I wouldn't worry about the DO letter. I shadowed a DO years ago but they've since moved away and are unreachable for a new letter. I've tried to shadow DO's at the local hospital (in the ER) but they don't accept shadow students. I've also shadowed MDs and they were happy to oblige my request for letters. I don't think it will hurt you seeing as willing DOs are sometimes hard to find (which is unfortunate), even in a large city much like the one where I'm located. I think some of the schools realize this predicament exists.

Those schools that don't state a DO letter as "mandatory" will accept MD letters without a problem, no doubt.

In some areas it's really hard to get a DO to shadow. Where I live, there's no shortage of DOs, but I called every one of them (about 25) in my yellow pages and their responses were "we just don't do that anymore".

WTF?????

If there's such a push by osteopaths for recognition and equality, then why wouldn't they be open to allowing prospective students to understand what it is they're getting into? Even for just one day!?

Anyway, I got an interview invite from a DO school without a DO letter (MD letter) but we'll see if I get in. I would get one if you can.... I still plan to shadow a DO because I really want to, but now I had to fall back on my mom's (an MD) connections and will have to travel pretty far to do it.

Shadowing is different than work experience. You are a "shadow", not a decision-maker or performing a task related to health care.

I think the OP has a good app, but health-care JOB experience would make it better. And I don't think that it will break him for not having it. Just a suggestion on my part for mdapps.

Are you a junior or senior? You still have time to get your gpa up if that is what you are worried about. Nail your upper level science courses and continue with the OR tech, volunteering, and shadowing and I would say you have a good chance.

AACOMAS hasn't processed my money order yet so I won't know my GPAs for a while but here is what I'm estimating:
3.2 something overall
3.4 something science

Just got my MCAT scores about 10 minutes ago:
VR 9 PS 6 BS 7 O for a whopping 22O

So I'm about to see if I can find a September 11 spot open but I'm not sure how to study for the next few weeks. I didn't study at all for verbal and obviously that's not my problem. My B.S. is in Counseling and Bible and verbal and writing tend to be my strong suits. The Physics section was really calculation heavy. I mainly studied by reading the Kaplan books but did not take the class. Should I focus on doing problems in my EK 1001 books because that seems to be my main problem?

My EC's include:
3-4 semesters serving breakfast in a homeless shelter (~16 hours/sem)
3 months (practicum) volunteering with troubled teens in a group home
10 months working with the mentally ill population
6 months on the oncology/renal floor then 4 months in the ER volunteering at the osteopathic hospital
3 hours, yes hours, with Habitat for Humanity
May 2007-present (practicum) volunteering for a study, visiting elderly Meals on Wheels clients performing HgA1c and blood glucose tests and discussing their diabetes

So what's the minimum MCAT score I need to get in? Just kidding 😛 Any advice?

i already graduated but was a psych major...had a change of heart.
im taking the rest of my pre reqs (physics and mcat) at a community college which is raising my gpa a bit. my BCP is 2.9 and BCPM is 2.94
overall undergrad 3.1 or 3.2
i know its very low...but i think Ill regret not trying. ill get a high MCAT bc thats the only thing that MAY save me...right? or is it semi out of reach?
and ill keep my OR work and volunteer experience, and get DO shadow and LOR. what do u think?

Well I know they wouldn't take the January test as the first score. I just took it in July and was hoping they would consider my application in the meantime. I thought if I take it in January maybe they would consider that as an update, kind of like when you update your grades. That way maybe they would reconsider me for an interview or help me get off a waitlist if I were that lucky. I'm just not sure how much I can raise that score in 3 weeks and right now I'm struggling with figuring out how to best study to raise my science scores.

Not sure, see, another big problem is that I haven't handed in ANYTHING yet, like, i literally just submitted my transcript requests, so my AACOMAS won't have my calculated GPA for another couple weeks.

You're solid for DO. Your GPA is right in range and your MCAT is very strong. If you don't get in this cycle, you can consider retaking the MCAT for 10s in each section, but the probability of you not getting in anywhere is extremely low given that you apply smartly.

If I had your stats, I would apply MD as well. I said private schools because the public DO schools tend to have in state preferences. There are DO schools in NY/NJ/Penn. I would apply to all of them public and private because you are from the region. Here is a map of the DO schools.

Your GPA/MCAT stats are just a little less than mine - I would retake the MCAT (but I think you're planning on it anyway) but GPA is ok.

You've got lots of great volunteer experiences, so no worries there. What about LORs? How confident do you feel about them? They don't have to be by the most prestigious person, but do think they will reflect a good relationship with you and the letter-writer?

Also, what about monetary employment? Where have you worked? More specifically, what levels of responsibility have you had? If you haven't worked for $$ because of school, then try to think about the responsibility factor in your volunteering. IMO, being selfless is great, but it's also great to be able to say "I was in charge of...." or "XYZ came about because of my planning". It really shows you are a do-er more than a follower.

What about EC's for fun? Do you do anything unique? You can take a look at my MDapps (5251) if you want to get a feel for what I put on my apps.

I do plan on retaking the MCAT but I honestly don't think I would be ready by September 11 so it's more likely going to be in January. I feel pretty good about my LORs. One of my science professors wrote a LOR for my MPH program which I will finish in May and is going to write another one for me. One of my professors I haven't been able to get ahold of and although he doesn't know me that well, only had him for one semester, I'm hopeful that he would write a good LOR. My DO letter should be really good and my non-academic professional and non-science professor letters should be outstanding. I have to figure out though if I should try to send those extra letters or not and which schools would take them.

I have worked all through school except for the past 2.5 years when I've been a stay-at-home mom. And by worked I mean paid for it. I've done retail and food service but also 2 years at the Office of Admissions at my first university and 2 years in housekeeping at the college I graduated from. Oh and I was an assistant supervisor in carts at Six Flags. Very glamorous. 😛 Hey but that should count as leadership experience right? I'm not sure if I included this above or not but I was a case manager working with the mentally ill population. I was the psychosocial specialist there and organized group outings and discussion afterwards.

I've enjoyed all my ec's but nothing that unique I guess. I haven't really planned or organized anything so hopefully everything else will make up for it. The volunteering I'm doing with Meals on Wheels is actually a study that I'm helping with but I'm not sure if I'll actually get to assist with any of the data analysis or not. I'm not sure whether or not you would list that as research.

Those are ALL awesome things to put on your app - for work experiences, go back as far as possible. If you're limited, put only the ones that were really meaningful.

The mental health counseling is absolutely relevant and you should include that.

Are you involved with any groups or school activities (if they're old enough) with your kid(s)? Those are unique non-volunteer ECs you could put for fun. If you want to PM me with other stuff, go for it!

POPS, I have almost identical stats to you, and am in the process of applying, so I definitely can't offer advice "from experience", but the idea that i've gotten from other SDN'rs is that people in our 3.0ish 24ish MCAT boat seem to have a chance as long as we have Strong LORS and EC's, and apply EARLY and BROADLY...that's what i've tried to do anyways...so good luck. 👍

I find whats interesting is that people who have lower MCAT scores and higher GPA's have a much harder time with the application process than people with low gpa's and higher MCAT's. Are there any schools besides VCOM who are more forgiving with the MCAT? especially when your GPA is higher than the average

I have found it to be the opposite. Then again, I am a pretty extreme case.

During my undergrad studies at UT, I graduated with 2.2 GPA. Came back to school for another undergrad degree (Biology), and I've got around a 3.4, with just a couple classes to go. All the hard stuff is out of the way too.

Cumulative GPA is 2.62
Cumulative Science GPA is probably 3.3-ish

I also got a 33 on the MCAT. I would have liked to have done a little better, but I thought that should be good enough.

When I applied a few years ago, I got two interviews. Both out of state allopathic schools. At the time, however, I had no volunteer/clinical experience, and I knew nothing about DO school, and did not apply. So we'll see how it works this time around. If I had to guess, I'd say I will end up at either an OOS DO school, UT-San Antonio, or Drexel (where I interviewed before and loved it.... hoping to get invited again).

There are some things that I really like about the DO education. As an athlete and personal trainer, I am big on myofasical release, but to be honest, I'm not going to be particularly picky about where I go to med school, because I'm not sure how much opportunity I will have to do so. I just want someone to give me a chance.

I guess I didn't clarify. I must have been distracted by my children. 😀 I already submitted my application. I put my work experiences back to when I worked at Taco Bell for 2 years in high school. Except for temp work, I put every job I've had including waitressing. Oh and I didn't mention that I'm a sahm because I plan to address it in secondaries if I have the chance.

I haven't been involved in many groups or organizations. I did go to Biology Club meetings for about a year but just listened to whoever was lecturing that week. I actually forgot to include that. My son is 2.5 and my daughter will be 1 on Friday so they don't have any school activities yet. I think the main thing that will hold me back is the MCAT but honestly I can't see taking it next month just to get a similar score. My gpa isn't spectacular but I definitely have a strong upward trend. I will have to keep you posted on how everything is going. Thanks again!! 🙂

my school offers general chemistry in a three part series.
i did fine in the first quarter but got a D in the 2nd quarter. I retook it during the summer and got a C-. I swear I study! I just don't know why it's not sinking in! Should I retake it again?! (third times the charm?) or just give up my med school dream now...? 🙁

How fine is fine for the first part of the chem series?
If you got an A for part 1
a C- for part 2
shoot for another high grade for part3 and call it a day (if I were you)
As long as you're averaging a B+ you're in good shape.
1 poor grade wont kill you for med school, alot of poor grades will...
Make sure you do well on your MCATs and you'll be fine.

How are you doing in the rest of your premed curriculum? If you're getting a 3.5gpa with that 1 chem course a C- you'll be okay.

P.S.: You can always tell your adcom "chemistry sucks balls" and see how far that gets you in the interview 🙂

Wanna hear something Ironic? I stated that chemistry sucked balls back when I was in college and now I'm a chemist!!!! I still think chemistry sucks but not as much as physics and vector calculus.

I had a C in Gen Chem too. I retook for an A and was much happier. My transcript looked better and, as I'm sure you all know, aacomas only counts the higher grade for GPA calc. It was as if I never screwed up in the first place.

Hey, I'm a chemist too and I always hated chemistry. I think I'm a glutton for punishment bc everyone else just quits a few months after they start and I've been doing this stuff for seven years now.

what is it with everyone freaking out? it's august....theres an entire slew of people that will be waiting on september MCAT scores. on top of that, most of the "MD" kids wont' bother to really apply till the last minute, and will bombard DO schools around late november/december...at this point i think you're pretty safe, even for submitting ur primaries.

are schools still accepting the january mcat? i thought most deadlines were jan 1 or around there. you wouldn't even have your score until feb and apparantly 85% of the classes are already full. maybe take both of them? sept and try and do your best, if it sucks, jan and make sure you let your schools know?

There's no way 85 % are already full. DMU hasn't conducted one interview yet.

I think he/she meant that 85% would be full by the time I got my January scores back in February.
