Congrats on the ECU acceptance! I just finished a very late in season interview on Tuesday and really really hope I get in.

I have a kinda off topic question. I'm sure there are other threads on this, but this thread is my comfort zone. Was anyone else shocked how high their "EFC" number on their FAFSA report was? Ummm, by my math, I think that ECU would think that I don't need any aid...which is NOT TRUE!! I've read that they weigh current income very heavily, which doesn't make ANY sense because I won't have the income anymore!

Any updates on UNC admissions???? This waiting is killing me!

I called this morning and they said they're still waiting on the admissions committee. Hopefully next week they'll have decisions ready.

any one know when we are going to hear about financial aid from wake, unc, and ecu?

Out of staters are not eligible for this, correct?

I had the same question, being non-traditional I had significant income this year as did my wife. I talked to finical aid and they said I would be receiving a packet from the school about aid, in May. I had the same thing happen when I did a postbach two years ago but ECU listed me as a 2nd degree student and I was able to get aid. So I assuming if a 2nd degree student can get full aid regardless of EFC so could a medical student.

Just keep in mind that EFC is used to calculate NEED based aid (subsidized stafford loan, grants) while the unsubsidized stafford loan and grad plus loans or NON-NEED based. Basically you don't need to worry about whether you're going to have to pay out of pocket since you'll get plenty of unsubsidized stafford loans. Also remember the cost of attendance (COA) for the first year is 28,000. COA-EFC (assuming an EFC of 8000) is 20,000. You'll get up to 8500 in subsidized stafford loans (which is the max) and the rest will come from unsubsidized stafford loans and maybe grad plus. After seeing buddhapaug's post (and freaking out of a sec), I remembered my financial aid meeting at another school which kinda worked all this out. Basically don't worry, you'll get plenty of financial aid to cover school. You might not be living in a 3000 sq ft house, but living in G'Vegas is cheap so no big deal.

Hope all that made sense.

Greg

I could be wrong on this but if I remember correctly you can borrow the max on unsubsidized , but if your EFC is over ~$8500 you will not be eligible for any subsidized staford loans. I am going to call Kelly Lancaster and ask her later today or tomorrow.

You can go here to see the calculation of need based eligibility. As long as this number isn't negative (meaning your EFC is less than the COA) you can get subsidized stafford loans. That's my understanding anyway. I'll be interested to see what you find out.

Yeah I think that sounds right. The formula is Cost of Attendance – EFC = Need based Eligibility; so, with a COA for 07/08 of $27,881, as long is your EFC is below $19,381, you should be able to max out on subsidized loans I would think.

In case there are any ECU lurkers out there and is interested I set up a BSOM 2011 facebook group. Hit the link below and join it.

Hey guys. I really never post on here and unlike some of the other people I've only called the admissions office twice since applying to UNC. The guy who picked up the phone (sorry I don't know every secretary by name...) said he was sorry and that the committees are still meeting. He apologized that it has been taking so long and admitted that they keep pushing back the deadline. He said that they should definitely have all their decisions by next friday, 1 week! He said the letters should be mailed that day and even encouraged me to call next Friday and that they would inform me of their decision over the phone. He said hang in there and good luck. I recommend alcohol consumption and derailment for the weekend's activities!

P.S. ECU told me they are still awaiting a decision for me to interview or not. If their education program is anything like their admissions process I'll probably be learning NEW breakthroughs in medical research like the polio vaccine.

I got the same thing regarding UNC admissions letters when I called a little while ago. I agree with the alcohol consumption until letters come out. It's gotten me this far and, Lord knows, I won't be doing much of it after this summer.

Ok, so I got some UNC scoop today.

It looks like all the decisions have been made but I have no idea when these decisions will be sent out.

Good luck everyone.

I received a letter from brody today concerning financial aid. It says the total budget is 27,809. So i am assuming that is the max you can borrow from stafford loans. Would that be the case?

Yeah, you can't borrow more federal aid than the amount of the budget.

As an aside, has anyone heard from UNC about financial aid? How long was the turnaround time?

Did you call the admissions office?

Does anyone know if UNC ranks their waitlist?

Anyone planning on calling the UNC admissions office today? Are all the decisions made? I guess that would mean the ADCOMM will not be meeting today. hmmm!!!! 😕

I just spoke to Lisa and she says that the committee at UNC will be making final decisions this week and that they anticipate that the letters will be sent either this week or next week. It all depends on how early, during the week, the committee informs the Admissions Office of its final decisions and how soon letters can be printed and sent out.

I suspect that the committee will be meeting today, but this is pure speculation. Good Luck!

Thanks for calling...takes care of the conflicting information that's floating around

Yes, thanks for calling. I feel dumb for believing any info from the admissions office after all the run around we've all been through. But it sounds like next week is the latest we'd know.

I feel the same way! It's kind of like, "Gee, I wonder what they'll tell us today?"
I am just not going to get my hopes up. If I operate under the assumption that I'll find out yes/no/maybe on May 15th, then any news before that date will be 'early' news.

Does anyone know if UNC ranks their waitlist?

Sort of. The subcommittees rank those people they want on the wait list and turn those in to Dr. Hoole. He then ranks them however he wants and makes the final decision on who to take off. I don't think we'll ever know where we are on the list.

Is anyone else out there on the WL for Wake? I was told I was in the top pool and was curious whether there has been anyone who has been taken off the waitlist yet.

I wasn't told my position, but I am hoping to get in. How do you feel about it? Who did you speak to at Wake?

Irene Tise has been very nice and informative. A side note: I've seen a few "worst admissions" office threads. To switch it up, despite hating to wait for Wake and UNC to make a final decision about me, I think that they have by far the most courteous admissions staff, even when they cannot provide further information.

Anyways, I was told that I was grouped in the top third, meaning that they don't individually rank everyone, but rather throw them into categories. I would encourage you to email or call them to see where you were placed.

I posted this in the Wake Class of 2011 thread in Allopathic:

I think your chances are good. Last year Wake interviewed 508 applicants and accepted 257 for the 114 spots. If you subtract 114 from 508 you get 394. If you divide 394 into thirds, that's ~ 131 in each third, (and the number could be smaller to account for the rejections). So, if they end up accepting around 257 again to fill all the spots, that would take everyone in the top third and more. I know it doesn't exactly work that way, but you get the point. Most applicants with multiple acceptances probably haven't withdrawn from schools yet until they see all their financial packages to decide and alot wait until the May 15th deadline.

Also, here is a link to a thread from last year where applicants began posting about there position on the waitlist and also getting off the waitlist. Waitlist movement began in May, stalled a little toward the end of May, but you will see that there were SDN acceptances in June and July.

I'm on the Wake WL, and I haven't heard of anyone being pulled off yet. Don't lose hope though, because the admissions office also told me that they "expect action" throughout May. I keep hearing that it also helps (at least at Wake) to continually show your interest your interest. I'm working on my 4th update letter so far, haha. Good Luck!

Spoke to someone in the Admissions Office at UNC today. Letters are going out on Friday... You can call in on Friday to find out your status!!! 😱 😱 😱

It's about time!!!

Good Luck!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

Oh one more thing, I asked if they were "FOR REAL" this time. They said YES!!!! ... 😍 Come on UNC! Show me some love!

Thanks for checking for us!
Let's hope they are 'FOR REAL' this time! 😉
Good luck everyone!!!! :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

You sure they said that we could call?!?! MAN!!!!

You sure they said that we could call?!?! MAN!!!!

I'm too chicken to call. :scared:
I think I'll wait for the letter rather than embarrass myself. If I get in I don't think I'll be able to control the screams 😀
and if I don't get in there will probably be an awkward silence followed by, "OK, thanks." Click.

Thanks! Guys, not trying to be a downer, but based on what happened to those who were still waiting this late last year, I'd go in expecting waitlist/rejection so you don't get disappointed (at least my strategy). If you do get in, then it's a celebration!

True or not, leave it to the Dookie :scared: :scared: :scared: to bring up bad news about Carolina😎 😎 😎

My friend's husband is a Dookie so I can't hate! But, nice comeback musinj6!

And Topdogg82 - There's something to be said for positive thinking even though I have pretty much come to the conclusion that my chances of an acceptance this year are slim to none. I have one waitlist already, but I am not banking on anything. Just trying to use some humor to keep me from thinking about the rejection. And, to continue the positive thinking... until I have that skinny envelope in my hand there's still hope - even if it is a waitlist!

good point, i guess to each his own. i'm usually an optimist, but with this med school admissions game out of my control, i prefer the safety of pessimism than of my hope being consistently dashed by various schools.

I think I am more of an optimist when I am posting, but at home I am pretty much planning out the reapplication year! I keep telling my s/o, "You know, I really don't think I'm getting in this year." And he just tells me to quit worrying about it b/c there's nothing I can do about the 'right now'. Then he ends with, "So, you reapply." Although he has also added that he really does NOT want to go through this process with me again! 😱

Good luck to all you guys waiting for UNC

So, bad news. I called UNC and they said that it will be ANOTHER week before we really know anything. Basically, it wont be tommorow.

She was really nice about it though.

that's insane.

you have to be kidding, this is ridiculous

I'm not surprised. I also called. The lady that answered the phone said that they'd be sending letters as the committee made decisions. She said they'd be sending letters this and next week.

This is must be a joke. Actually, I called and they said everyone gets in! Horray!

Wouldn't it be great if the admissions line at UNC was actually some secret radio call-in-and-win setup? The 4094th caller "checking in" gets automatic admission and a free hoagie from the local subshop.
