Does anyone know if UNC gets back to IS applicants faster than OOS applicants? Or does it really just depend on the qualifications of the applicant?

Wake does not send out secondaries to everyone. If you got one, you have already made the first cut. Good luck everyone. Looks like there's not much action on this post this year. I had a hard time finding it.
i was just looking over your mdappl, and i noticed that you had your unc rejection over the phone?! man, sorry, that's got hurt. i hope i never get that call.

They don't actually call you with the rejection, but I called them and they did tell me over the phone. I was sick of waiting for the letter because it had been 10 months (no kidding) since hitting that submit button on AMCAS. I'm not sure if they gave out rejections and waitlists over the phone last year, but I don't think they did. It's not a fun conversation to have. Anyway UNCSOM can eat my ass. No offense to any of the med students there because I know some of them and they are cool. But the way the admissions process is run looks like it was designed by the US government.
I'm tempted to call UNC now just to be sure...should I bother? I haven't been contacted since I received my "complete" email in september. I emailed and never received a reply. Can i still hope I have an interview coming...or probably not?

well the question that I ask the admissions people is always: Describe the best and worst part of attending the school.
my other question: will I pick up a southern accent? seriously I was talking to a guy who was doing his undergrad at wake at one of my other interviews... nice guy but had a really thick accent. I asked him if he was from NC, and he said "no, I'm from Delaware" 😱
^stupid question, but they can't all be serious.

I actually just got accepted to Wake, and everything there seemed absolutely great when I visited. Everybody seemed so nice there, and the facilities are pretty nice overall. I really had no complaints and would be very happy if that is where I went to school next year, but just curious, what are the 3 things (or more) that you like about Wake Forest? How did you decide that Wake was the best place for you to be?

I am not originally from the South. So far I haven't picked up a Southern accent, but I do occasionally say y'all.
In my opinion, one really good thing about Wake is that they actually make curriculum changes based on student feedback. There have been things about the first two years that have changed recently and overall I think that those changes have been for the benefit of the students. I can give specific examples if you want when I have more time to write. Let me know.
The downside is probably the tuition.

It's something you don't really want to believe but once you see it you can't forget it. I keep mentioning that UNC is slow and that not hearing is the norm, but people don't believe me. I didn't want to believe it either when I was applying, but unless you're a stellar applicant (which I certainly wasn't) then you will have to wait like the majority of us. Good luck, current applicants!
This thread has kind of died, I guess there aren't a lot of regulars this year. Maybe it will pick up later on in the cycle.

I'm an OOSer and was complete at UNC on Aug. 16th and I haven't heard squat since I got the email saying I was complete. I called last week and the lady said they hadn't made a decision as to whether or not they're gonna interview me. 
Oh well I shall await my fate like everyone else...

Well, this might not be helpful in terms of what you're looking for in an answer, but one of the best things about Wake for me (and the reason I chose it) is the people I'm (often) around 10 hours a day. This sounds silly, but you learn not to take good people for granted. I love my classmates -- they're smart, of course, but most are chill, down-to-earth, and "like me." I've heard so many stories about med schools with competitive student bodies that I really appreciate the non-competitive attitude of Wake and its students everyday. The environment for learning is very collaborative, which is key in med school because it's really the only way to survive. No matter how independent of a learner you have been, you'll be reaching out for support in one way or another in med school. In addition to loving my classmates, I have found so many exceptional faculty -- our main anatomy professor is a fantastic lecturer, making the material really interesting, and often amusing! So far, our biochem and immunology professors have been really good too.
Also, our curriculum as a whole is amazing. As was said previously, it is constantly tweaked due to student feedback, and the changes happen quickly. Our anatomy lab has been called "the golden standard" by other medical schools who visit Wake to learn how to better their programs. The integration between disciplines is extensive too, which really helps you put things together in your head. I also think they've found a good balance between class time and free time. I can be more specific about our schedule for those who are interested, but I'll wait to be asked that 😉
The case-based learning component and multiple other small groups really facilitate my problem-solving skills and get me actively involved in the material and skills I'll need on the wards. Briefly -- we begin interacting with patients starting during the first week of school in our patient-interviewing course. As of October of our first year, we were performing full histories up on the wards. We're also learning physical exam skills, practicing them on each other, and mentored by 2nd year students. As for Case: we are presented with a new patient case each Monday, work through possible mechanisms and diagnoses in a small group, decide on learning issues (things we don't know and want to know), research those during the week, discuss what we've learned each Friday, and learn more about the patient case. Pretty neat process -- helps you look at the basic science material in a whole new (and much more exciting) way.
Sorry -- I guess I have a lot to say! Hope this is remotely helpful to someone.

1. Um... I guess the lecture hall is a little annoying... it's that typical style with those small little desks and not tons of leg room. It's fine, just not ideal.
2. We're 5-7 miles away from the rest of the university (other grad schools + undergrad) -- I would prefer to be closer, just for the community feeling and having other young people close by. But, we're practically in the same building as a really great hospital... so, I'm not gonna complain too much. And since the campus is really not far, we go there for IM sports and when we get the urge to study somewhere new.
3. It's far from home, and far from my family (sorry -- I know this doesn't really help you).
4. Sure, I'd love to be paying less for tuition.
This is all I can come up with -- to be completely honest, nothing really jumps out at me. If I come up with anything else, I'll post it.

Thanks a lot for the response. This is exactly what I was hoping you would say because the student body is certainly one of the major factors I am taking into consideration when choosing a medical school. Based on everything I have learned about the program and the people, there is a very good chance that I will be joining you in Winston-Salem next year -- North Carolina is awesome! Your help is definitely appreciated.

If you contact the admissions office, they can try to hook you up with a current student who can put you up for the night. Plus, if you stay with a student, they can show you where to go on interview day which takes a little of the stress out of it. I remember when I showed up for my interview, I was running late and the parking garage is on the other side of the hospital from the med school admissions office. I had to stop and get directions and I was kind of stressed out.
Also, I'd like to chime in about the proximity to the undergrad campus issue. When I was on the interview trail, I too really liked the collegial feel of having the med school be integrated with the undergrad campus. I don't think it's a huge deal, but it could tip the scales in favor of one school over another. The reason Wake med is not on the undergrad campus is that the hospital is not on the undergrad campus. Baptist hospital is the largest employer in Winston-Salem (12,000 employees) and the hospital complex is simply too big to fit on a small undergrad campus like Wake. In fact, Wake probably has about half as many students as Baptist has employees. By contrast, UNC has a massive undergrad campus and the UNC hospital fits nicely on that campus. So I think in general, big state schools are more likely to have the hospital/med school on campus and small (private) schools are less likely to have a hospital/med school on campus. However, our med students are involved in campus life, taking part in intramural sports on the undergrad campus and tailgating (i.e. free food and beer) for the football games. Wake has a pretty good basketball team and we can get tickets to the games.

Going to Wake for my interview on Monday!!! They called me today saying they had a cancellation for Monday and could I come then instead of my scheduled Jan. 2nd interview. Guess that's one benefit of being near by. Any words of wisdom from people that have interviewed at Wake? (This is my first med school interview so I'm a bit nervous!) Thanks!

It's a round-robin affair with 3 interviewers at 20 min each. One MD, one PhD, and one other (usu a Master's of sorts). I felt like it was pretty low stress on all accounts, because there's no time for awkward silence. I thought it was kind of fun, actually. This is cliche, but just be yourself.
The tour isn't bad. Make sure they take you to the Anatomy lab and the top of Brenner. Enjoy the lunch and the cookies in the Admissions office.

1. Have lots of questions ready.
2. Know as much as possible about the school and program, so that you're convincing when you're asked why you want to get into Wake (and if you're not asked, find a time to say it!)
Having no/few questions makes you look like you're not interested enough in the program, and that's probably the worst thing you can do to hurt your chances at Wake. Be curious and thoughtful!
This will also help at lunch time, when first years take you to lunch. I've served in that role a bunch this year, and it really makes the hour much more helpful if y'all have lots you're wondering about. It's the BEST way to get info about the school. We're not on the admissions committee, nor do we talk to them at ALL about you guys, so we're really honest about stuff, and you can be too.

Hey I got an automated e-mail from UNC SOM over the weekend saying that they have received my supplemental and they will be calling me to set up an interview...HOW long is this wait for the call usually? Should I call them in a couple of days before thanksgiving?

For me, it took just a couple days for them to call. With the holidays coming up, I would say it makes sense for you to give them a ring if you haven't heard from them by Tuesday afternoon. Good luck!

my interviews were very conversational, pretty typical medical stuff, plus information about me (what do you do for fun, what books do you read) etc. I didn't really get asked anything difficult and both of my interviewers were very friendly and seemed like they just wanted to get to know me. I had early interviews followed by talk from the admissions dean plus finaid, followed by lunch and tour.
Chapel Hill's an awesome place and UNC's an awesome medical school, most of the facilities have just been redone (one of the buildings is under construction), and just like i experienced in comming to UNC as an undergrad everyone I met was friendly and definitely willing to help.

Hey, I know that you can call WFU to set up an interview. I was wondering what might be a good time to do that since I just received an e-mail notifying that all materials necessary to complete my application have been received and the committee on admissions will now evaluate the application for interview status? Does that e-mail sort of sound familiar? When might be a good time to give the admissions office a ring?

I called the day after I got that e-mail and they told me I was in the top interview pool and I scheduled the interview over the phone at that time. This was a couple of years ago, but based on my experience I don't think it's too soon to call them. Obviously you will have to wait until Monday at this point, but just call them and say something like "Hi, this is IDontKnow and I was just calling to check on the status of my application." Don't be afraid to call. I don't think calling can actually affect which "pool" they put your application in. It just enables you to schedule an interview right away if it turns out that you were in the top pool. If you didn't call, they would contact you to schedule the interview eventually, but who knows how long that would have taken.

They have a committee meeting mid-december (presumably after your interview day), so you will probably (i think) be considering during that meeting.
Have a great time at the interview! The entire day is quite laid back, and the students seem to strike a good balance between "chill" and "dedicated."

There is no way that the class could be full by now. Usually, at least half of the class gets in off the waitlist and most of the waitlist movement happens in May when people with multiple acceptances start dropping out.

UNC is calling about acceptances? I thought they just used snail mail...
