I don't post often but check SDN every day. I find it comforting that I am not alone (especially regarding my recent OCD behavior 😀 ) but for some reason I have not been able to get past my lame superstition that if I post about my progress I'll jinx myself! (My neighbor gave me a cute UNC hat and I refuse to wear it!)

Anyway, I have decided that it is pretty selfish of me to search the NC thread (or any thread for that matter) for answers to my questions without sharing my info and maybe helping someone else. It kinda hit me when I started getting nervous about UNC. I interviewed the last week of October and haven't heard a peep since. The recent posts about it really taking up to 8 weeks calmed my nerves A LOT. Once people started posting their info I really felt selfish for not sharing --- so my next post will be adding my info!!!!

Just wondered if anyone checked in with UNC before receiving a secondary. My primary was verified about 6 weeks ago, and NOTHING...anyone else????

Also, croucht how can you be in lambda chi and gamma phi? Fraternity and Sorority?!?!?!? Just curious! And congrats on Wake and UNC!!!!
 
Hi all-

I'm going to be applying to med school next year. Did anyone on here apply early decision to UNC? UNC is my top choice and I'll love to have the process over early, but just wondering if anyone else has gone this route.

I was complete with AMCAS in mid-July and did not receive anything from UNC confirming that they had received my AMCAS. When I saw that others had started to receive a 'preliminary' email I called UNC. They said they had sent me an email - but I never got it (and I know it wasn't deleted because I was paranoid and didn't delete anything for a long time!). I finally received the 'preliminary' email on 8/10 but didn't get the secondary until 9/14. Then, I got an email on 9/19 stating they would be contacting me for the interview. That seemed to take forever as well. When I didn't hear anything for over a week I called and they said they would be calling in a few days. What cracked me up was when I did finally get the call to schedule the interview Lisa (interview coordinator) said there were spots open that week if I wanted!

So far every time I have called everyone has been extremely nice and helpful. If you're concerned go ahead and call. I think someone mentioned earlier that there was some computer glitch with a letter - so maybe the glitch is happening for all applicants no matter if they're pre or post interview.

I know a guy who goes to undergrad at UNC applied there ED and was accepted. I'd only consider it if you're in state have a 3.7+ GPA and a 33+ MCAT and decent extracurriculars (some research + clinical stuff). They except VERY FEW people this way, and in their words only those that they are absolutely sure they will accept ANY year. Even then, I'd just apply early, and you'll still know by Thanksgiving, what's an extra 2 months? The downside to applying early is simply too much to justify the benefit, in the end, all ED will save you is money, and you're gonna go broke in med school anyway!
 
so what's it gonna be croucht? Wake or UNC! My $.02 . . . Chapel Hill is a MUCH more fun place than Winston. In fact, at wake, the students were talking about how they came to chapel hill on their weekends! Though Wake's anatomy program is pretty cool . . .

Hey- yeah I just posted about this; I'm in the same predicament. My primary was verified in September and I have YET to hear anything. This is my 2nd time applying (I was WL last year, I figured things would be quicker this time around) and last year I already had a secondary to UNC by this time. I'm a bit freaked out, but I called UNC and they said that they have over 3,000 apps to sift through so to be patient.

I guess its just sittin and waitin as usual.

congrats on hearing back from UNC in only 2 weeks. when i saw your posting on the interview feedback i first thought 'oh great i am so getting a rejection because i haven't heard anything.' then i checked out your stellar mdapps profile (no wonder you heard back so quickly 😎 ) and saw others posting that they still hadn't heard. sdn can really squash you if you don't look at the big picture!
i have informed all my friends that they have to wear Carolina blue every monday until i hear from UNC!

generally in the evening on Monday, or anytime on tuesday.
 
What about for Wake Forest? How soon after the meeting do people hear? I think they're supposed to be meeting on Wednesday this week (perhaps friday). Should I expect to hear something that day, or next week? Thanks.
 
you wont know at the earliest until the monday after the committee meeting but at the latest you should know by next wednesday.

I think it is typically the Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday of the week following the meeting, but for some reason after the last meeting they went out on Friday the week of the meeting. So, Wake people could hear as soon as two days after the meeting. Good luck everyone!
 
I've been complete at UNC for a while and the only hold up to my interview is my in-state residency verification. how hard could that be, I went to a UNC system school and paid In-state tuition there....I don't know what's taking them soooo long. Do you guys know how long it takes for them to go through verifying the applicants?!?!
 
I applied to UNC as a Michigan resident and later found out I was actually an NC resident. I called UNC to ask if I was indeed an NC resident and they got me a secondary and in for an interview in less than two weeks.... so I don't see why they should be taking so long with your app since you are obviously a resident. I'd call to check on it.
 
Yeah I've been calling them once every two weeks since my completion at UNC...and they give me the same BS!!! I'm soo annoyed by them.
 
I've had lots of problems with residency and that office. I submitted my secondary in August/early Sept. Got sent residency long form end of September which I submitted immediately. Was notified of out of state status middle/end of october but I got a call for an interview around the same time. I think the res office and the admissions office didn't communicate because I was interviewed as if I were in-state. No re-review, no definite residency determination, etc. I am appealing my status and that is certainly taking awhile as well. Sent notice of appeal early Nov. Got letter saying they would be in touch about the appeal early Dec.....
Good luck with your app and this res crap.

Did they explain why you were considered out of state?
 
I did ask and the res lady took ages trying to find my app and figure out who I was. After a brief glance at it, she said that it was generally my time spent out of state. I understand UNC's (and ECU's) problem but I have technically been a student the entire time I have lived out of state, going home only on vacations and such. I don't think I should be penalized for not being a drain on NC tax payers and for having gone to college out of state. And for you, having been considered in-state previously, they are just being a pain in the a** and are dragging their heels.
I think things will work out for you. I would just do the impossible- wait patiently (and call a lot).

Thanks! It'll be a tough choice between the two but I'm probably leaning UNC. Gamma Phi is the chapter name...the first chapter was the Alpha chapter of Lambda Chi and so on. The number means that I was the 910th person initiated in the gamma phi chapter. As far as timing, UNC has been known to be notoriously slow, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Calling or e-mailing can never hurt, but they may just not be able to tell you anything. Good luck with the apps!:luck:
 
So, if my file's been complete at UNC since August 16th and I haven't heard anything about an interview should I give up?

i'll be interviewing at wake the day after new years! Hopefully i don't get battered while snowboarding in NJ.
 
i think CTtarheel is OOS and got in- im waiting, but i just interviewed a couple weeks ago, so it might be a while

Did anyone hear from UNC last night or today? Maybe there was not a committee meeting?

I haven't heard anything either! It's killing me!!!!!!! Does anyone know if they are going to meet next Monday? Next Wednesday will be 8 weeks for me. My committee interviewer gave me his card but I don't have clue what I would write in an email. "Hi remember me, are y'all meeting next week - because I'd really like to know before the holidays!?!"

Thanks for clearing that up! 😉 I was a gamma phi, so i was a lil confused!

Also, anyone receive secondaries from UNC recently?!?!?!?
 
I called last week regarding getting a secondary and the lady told me they send them out through January. I called today and the guy tells me I'm still under review and they send secondaries out through March. Who knows what to believe, but I hope to get the secondary soon. This is a little out of control. This time last year I had been post interview for like a month.

Also, just wondered, I know it's been addressed before, but...I am not sure whether to do the essay or the characteristics. I feel that I answered the essay question within my personal statement, so I am leaning toward the characteristics. Is there anything negative about going that route? And...for those who picked the characteristics - did you just list them or write descriptions???? Thanks!!!!!

I simply listed the characteristics. The secondary did not lend itself towards elaborating. It didn't matter anyway because neither interviewer even mentioned my secondary application. Obviously this is just my experience.
 
yeah neither interviewer mentioned my secondary essay either, so i don't think it's as important as it is for other schools (read: duke). however, who knows what they discuss in their adcom meetings? on another note, waiting for unc is gonna suck

I did the list, with each characteristic in a sentence that said what it was and one reason why I was listing it. Not a paragraph or anything. For me, it actually came up during my interview. My adcom interviewer, Dr. Cephalo, asked "give one example of when you have demonstrated that you are xyz" for one or two of them. Not too hard to answer, but something that you should have in mind going into an interview if you choose the list.
 
Anyone know if Wake Forest is sending out any interview invites before the break?

For those who found out about their interview by calling, how long after you were complete did you wait to call?
 
I called about 1 month after I was complete.

Does anyone know if Wake's waitlist moves at all before May?

they claim that it does... and that about half the class will come off of it. who really knows though. I really liked the place.

For those waiting on Wake Forest decisions...

I called Wake today and asked what was going with the decisions. The nice lady in the office told me they are still "receiving the votes" from the meeting on Wednesday. Not sure what that means exactly.

Anyway, she's hoping that decisions will go out on Monday, but she couldn't guarantee it. If it doesn't happen Monday, it will be after Christmas because the Dean will be out starting Tuesday and he has to be there for some reason. Acceptances and wait listed folks will be notified by email and through snail mail. Rejections will only be notified by snail mail.

So, there's the scoop. Happy waiting.

I hate to keep bringing this up, but hearing from UNC within 8 weeks of your interview is the exception. Most people won't hear until March or April. I know that sucks, but that's the way it is. I went through one year of applying being hopeful that I'd hear at 8 weeks, but it was longer than that, and it was a rejection. The next year I knew it would be the spring (unless you're an awesome applicant, most acceptances come in the spring) because I was barely mediocre. Some people interviewed in October or November and didn't hear anything until late April.

Try not to stress. Good things come to those who wait. :luck:

Well I interviewed this week and we get our decisions Jan 10... so at least i supposedly have a date to work with.
 
No secondary. No word. No nothing from UNC. And last year I already had a secondary and interview scheduled by this time. I'm really startin to break a sweat here!! I think I'm gonna call again next week but with the holidays coming up who knows when anything will happen...

What in the world is going on with UNC? I haven't heard anything back from ECU either and I've been complete there for over a month. This waiting thing is going to kill me in the end...
 
Just so you're aware, ECU is slower than molasses at 0 degrees Kelvin. You could have been complete a year ago and it would still take forever. Don't worry too much about not hearing quickly from ECU. UNC on the other hand is even more slow than usual it seems this year. Who knows what going on over there.
 
To backup the slow processing claims, at ECU, I had complete status on November 1st and received an interview invite on December 15th (interview date not set yet).

Still very glad to have an interview.
