Two questions:

1) Does being on the Dean's List deserve a place under awards/honors?

2) If so, is there a good way to indicate all the different semesters without making it many different entries, since it requires you to select one month/year?

1) ABSOLUTELY!

2) I see no shame in multiple entries. They are, in fact, multiple awards.

1) Yes

2) Just say "was on the deans list for 7 semesters for having above a 3.5 overall GPA" or whatever the requirements were for your school. LizzyM (adcom member) advises against entering it multiple times. Just select the dates that you were on the deans list . . . if this spans 4 years, that's ok.

I put it! I listed them separately but maybe I should combine them. I'm not sure how you could though.

The problem is that under Awards, Honors, Scholarships, you can only put one month and year, not a range.
 
but can they not read your GPA and know you are on the deans list? If dean's list, then presidents list as well no? plus I went to a junior college my first year and got a 4.0, but they do not have "deas list" there, so do i put it anyways? this is interesting.

I dont know if i want to put multiply entires, I ended up with a 3.97 GPA, i would have a lot of entires....:scared:

You could always enter Dean's List for the last semester you got it, and under the description, state that you qualified X out of Y semesters.
 
In order to account for multple semesters on the Dean's List, I simply put my graduation date as the date, and under the Name of Award, Honor, or Organization, I wrote Dean's List (Multiple Semesters). I think this will suffice, hopefully.
 
I really don't think Deans List is worth listing. It is kind of obvious by your GPA, and most students who apply to med school do make Deans list. My premed advisor pretty much laughed at the idea of listing it. That is just my opinion (and my advisors, too).

Very interesting. Never heard Dean's List being received like that before.

By the same logic, would you not include graduating with honors, too? Where would you draw the line between "expected" and "an honor"?

I wasn't planning on putting that either. IDK, maybe for the DO app I would just because the format has a whole special section for honors and awards, but there is no way I would waste space on AMCAS for that sort of stuff.

I agree, I was reading about the application and they state that processing will begin in May.

Has anyone been able to fully submit their application yet?
 
My advisor wont let me submit until I get my grades for this term, which isn't until ~June 20th....Grrr. Sometimes I hate quarter systems (but not in august when you all have started school and I haven't) I guess you can't have it both ways

its so much nicer to be out early than to start later!!!!

besides, my school doest even start til practically September (its like the last few days of August).

on the flip side, i was done w/ school May 8th!!! ahhhh the life of a college on semesters.

if only the MCAT wasnt suckin the life out of my very soul
 
i am having my PS reviewed right now and then will submit within 2 wks ...gonna try earlier this year so I can get a better chance
 
sweet, now that we got some clarifications on deans list material and applying and stuff, I have a random question for you fellas (C. Bear, prions, doc h, ryserr21, whomever else)

I know D.O schools stats are lower then MD schools. I am a pretty competitive student for MD schools so do DO schools frown upon that? I know a lot of people that apply to DO as a backup plan but dont intend to go, and some have really good marks and do not go to DO even though they get accepted. I actually really want to go to DO. Do the schools ever say that this guy is trying to use us? I don't want to be labeled that way.

Just a random question I was thinking/worrying about.

frown upon being a competitive applicant? that doesnt really make sense to me. do you mean would they be upsent if you applied to MD schools?my friends have told me they were asked whether or not they applied MD in the interviews....they just answered truthfully and moved on, it wasnt a big deal. if you apply early and let them know you are interested in becoming a DO and not just using it as a back up youll b fine....i find it very hard to believe they would use the fact that you are a great applicant against you!!!

unfortunately, many people do do that....but theres nothing you can do about other people's actions. the one thing you can do, is leave the adcoms no doubt that you want to become an osteopathic physician, which is exacatly what i am going to do.

I'm applying as soon as possible, i have two letters from DOs, i'm volunteering at an osteopathic center for children, ive visited schools, been to osteopathic awareness cconferences... I'm doing my best to make sure that they realize "hey, this guy is for real, he wants to be an osteopathic physician and is excited about it." i think thats how you separate yourself from the "back up" applicants.

i guess well see how it works out soon 🙂

wow thanks a bunch for your very nice answers. A family friend who was 3 years ahead of me taught me everything there is to know about pre-med. He applied and didnt get into any MD but got into DO at Western in California. Since then he has loved it. I still admire him so its a big desire for me check this school out myself, he tells me i'd like it alot. Anyways, enough with the sentimental crap, i gotta get off this website, its freakin addicting!
 
Hi, just a couple of quick questions here.

I see some people have fully submitted their application (thought you couldn't do this until June 1) Is there any benefit to submit it now versus June 1??

For the identification number for when you registered for the MCAT isn't your AAMC ID is it? Because mine is only 8-digits long. I assume they're asking for your SSN?

Do you have to post withdrawn classes even though it was just to switch to the same class at a different time? (also other classes you've withdrawn from just because it was after the drop date but before any grades were made). One more, do you have to post AP credit even though you did not use it? I got credit for AP Bio but took both semesters anyway. Thanks!

Why wait to submit if you can have it done now? Earlier = better (unless that means you rush it and make mistakes or will have something significant happen/change in the next 2 weeks)

They match your MCAT scores you released to AACOMAS via your SSN, not AAMC ID.

You should post whatever is displayed on your transcripts. That's how they will be checking. If you got a W, list it. If you DID NOT receive AP credit on your transcript, I don't see why it should be listed. Anyone else?

Like Chocolate Bear said, you MUST put down exactly what is on your transcript. If you have W's on there, you better list them. If you have AP credit on your transcript, you better list that too. AACOMAS is going to see it anyway once your transcripts come in.

Hello everyone I just have a quick question. I am just about ready to submit my app, but I realized that I sent in my transcript and it has been received by AACOMAS and it has a pending grade for one of my classes from last semester. There was a problem with my grade, but it is sorted out now, and I am waiting for it to change on my official transcript. I was wondering if I should submit my application, or if I should wait for my grade to be updated, and then send in the new transcript. What do you guys think?

If it was me, I'd call them in the morning and see what would be best to minimize confusion/maximize likelihood of the schools getting the correct grade the first time.

How long do you have to wait for them to fix it? If we're talking a matter of days or a week, I would wait. They might not be able to verify your application anyway without the corrected grade.

Thought we could start a thread about problems entering in grades to AACOMAS.

Anyways, things were going good initially. BUT, I noticed that my community college science classes don't list the lab portion. For example, Organic Chemistry 1 is listed as:

Chem 222......Organic Chemistry I........ A........ 4 credit hours

This also occurs on the trancript with Intro to Biology, General Physics II, and Orgo II. Should I enter the classes as they appear on the transcript and assume schools can tell I took the lab since they are 4-credit classes? Or should I add Lecture/Lab in the course name? 😕

Since it's not addressed in the guidelines and they don't have a lecture+lab designation (unlike AMCAS), I'd call or email them. They'll be closing up shop in a little while, so I'd call ASAP.

Last year I just added "with lab" into the course title and everything turned out fine. They verfied my application without making any corrections. 👍

Ditto! I had tons of labs in my Geology/Meteorology/Natural Resources courses (I had a Geology degree) and assumed adcoms wouldn't realize these courses had labs with them so I marked (with lab) on everything with a lab. It worked out fine.
 
hate to sound like a noob here but can I submit my AACOMAS before they have my undergrad transcripts? I only requested the registrar send them to AACOMAS on May 13th, but if i'm ready now I'd hate to have to wait the weeks it will take for AACOMAS to recieve/process my transcripts.

also, i know this has been addressed but i'd like to ask again. I took the MCATs April 2005(outdated but listed on my AACCOMAS this year) and I'm taking the MCATs on June 13th. Should i wait to send secondaries until July when my scores come in, or submit secondaries immediately as I get them, which will hopefully be in June as I'm submitting the primary ASAP.

thanks choco and best of luck in this cycle...this will be my third time as well and am determined that this is the year. class of 2013!!! last times i put all my eggs in one basket and got burned, gonna apply to 10+ DO schools this year...also for the big 3 in the carribean, do you apply directly thru them or do you need to go thru amcs?

Yeah I made some previous application mistakes, too, but this year it's all business!

You apply directly to the Caribe schools. The applications are fairly innocuous.

I personally would wait until you get the new MCAT score because what happens if you bomb the MCAT (I'm talking like a 17) and have already paid the fee? You can't get your money back. If, however, you are confident that you will nail the MCAT then go ahead and submit.

Do you know if they have last years personal statement on file? so will they compare last years personal statement to this years?

Not sure if they actually have a copy, but I wouldn't advise using last year's. If they do have a copy, it would probably seem lazy. Also it didn't "work" last year (although perhaps that was the fault of other aspects of your app), so why not at least try to improve it?

You can submit before you transcripts are in, but AACOMAS will not begin verifying your application until after they receive your transcripts. Essentially, it will take the same amount of time either way, see what I mean?

Some schools will put your application on hold until they receive your updated MCAT score, so they will not send you a secondary until your score comes out. If you do receive some secondaries before your score comes out, you can either fill them out if you feel like the test went well or wait until you get your score back and decide then if it's worth the secondary fee. Either way, you will not be late. If your score comes out in mid July, you can have everything ready to go and be complete at your schools by August 1st, which is pretty darn early.

I took one CC course and the school does not have an * next to its name. It reads 0.00 for the GPA. Once they get my transcript will the 3 credit hrs out "A" be factored in?? Thanks.
 
i didnt look through the thread to see if this question was posted...

where on the aacomas application does "honors college" go? its not necessarily an "award" per say but it is a merit based "status". awards/honors/scholarships? ec/volunteering? let me know what you all did for this..thanks so much
