what about submitting it without the official MCAT scores there. I took them last August, so I don't know why they're not received by the application. How do I make them appear on my application ? 🙂

Log on. Click SEND ALL OF MY SCORES. Click AACOM, the first option in the first box. Click ADD. Click I AGREE. Click SUBMIT.

I went to see a career counselor today about applying to DO schools. He told me that i should wait until next year to apply because aacomas already began accepting applications and that i would be a month behind everyone else. I just graduated this month from Berkeley and was planning to start my application now. Is it too late? I thought aacomas didn't accept submissions until june 4th or so, is that right?
 
Ahh advisors... gotta love them. If you're talking about applying this cycle for entry into the c/o 2013, and you feel good about your app (completed MCAT, good GPA, bla bla bla), why would you wait?

You have nothing to lose if you apply, and possiby a year to gain if you apply and get accepted. Just because you didn't submit to AACOM on May 1st, doesn't mean you don't have a shot. I think most schools would still consider you early if you get your app completed within the next month or so. Just go with your gut and go for it, man. :luck:
 
I don't suggest you procrastinate like I did, but I wasn't "completed" with AACOMAS until August. As Fab said, if you have a solid MCAT, GPA, LoRs, ECs, etc, why wait? It definitely is NOT too late to apply.

Sidenote: I hate advisers. Mine told me I'd never get in anywhere. She can suc..

Said counselor could have just robbed you of a year of your life! You could have submitted the first week of May, but you are still quite early. If your app looks good, fill it out ASAP. Also, toss the deuce to your "counselor" and find someone else to give you timeline advice for your apps! 😎
 
for semester hours? if you went to a purely semester based school, just 4 credits a semester for 8 semester = 32 credits to graduate what do you enter in AACOMAS for semester hours? On my official school transcript it just says "CREDIT HOURS: 1.000"

Application instinct tells me to put down exactly what it says on the transcript. In the same vein as AACOMAS' instructions to explain, in your PS, that an English requirement was fulfilled by another in-major course, I'd also write a sentence explaining your institution's weird credit hour designation. This way the schools will understand that you have, in fact, met their pre-reqs. This is just an assumption, though, as I've never dealt with this problem. You can always call or email AACOMAS.
 
2 q's

1. If I took an intro to Bio class in undergrad and failed it, then took an intro to bio class in a post-bac 5 years later with a different course name (still intro to bio though) could that count as a retake of the first one?

2. Can I submit AACOMAS before they actually receive my official transcripts or MCAT scores, and have them verify that stuff as it comes in?

Its not to late at all...Get started. The sooner you start the sooner you finish. Plus, you will find nothing but helpful people here.

I'm in need of another pre-med's advice. I recently got back my MCAT score 1st time 27M ( VR 11, B 8, PS 8). The writing score felt like a drop kick in the face. Just wondering if anyone here retook the exam and whether you think it's a good idea to schedule a retake for August.😎

Some of that depends on your GPA. Truthfully if you're applying this early with a halfway decent GPA a 27M should be adequate. You should rest easy on the writing portion, unless you're not meeting a school you are DYING to go to's minimum on writing (few have these) a low writing score is never worth an MCAT retake.
I would just press on with the app process if I were you.

I think I did Work in chrono just i had it in a resume type thing.

I did not list my EC's chrono -- when I click VIEW APPLICATION SUMMARY (top right - orange lettering) the first 7 are listed chrono and the final 10 are shuffled

Not sure what's up with this
 
i have a serious question for the sdn community.
during my sophmore year I was given a citation for underage possesion of alcohol.
The question listed in the DO app asks if I have ever been CONVICTED of a misdemeanor or a felony.
I paid the citation at the local courthouse and heard nothing else about the incident
Does this need to be listed. My attourney said the word convicted in the question gives me a way out because conviction many times includes sentencing and I was never sentenced.
Has anyone else had any experiance with this type of issue and how was it handled. did you or did you not list it? what were the consequences of either action (listed and not accpeted bc of it OR not listed and found out and not accepted bc of it)
 
also sorry but what did people do about research, if you did at your school for credit (also 1 summer worked + paid, so that obviously went under work) but did you list research under your E.C's and such?

It will be on a background check, if under age possesion is considered a misdemeanor or a felony in your state it needs to be listed. Your attorney is playing too much into the way the question is worded, this isn't a lawsuit you're trying to pursue it is a Med School Admission.
 
I am wondering if you can release your primary AACOMAS application before you take the MCAT(signed up for August 5th). I know for pharmacy school this is an option, as long as the PCAT scores are available at the time of the secondary applications, around the same time as the academic update. I have my whole application complete except for the MCAT. Is a late August/Sept release a little late for a primary app in the AACOMAS system? Any info and advice would be much appreciated!!

I am in the same boat and have asked the same question. The responses I have received are along the lines of...GO JUMP IN THE RIVER...Just kidding, I was told to send my app as soon as possible. That way once the MCAT scores come back, it will be complete. From what I was told some school will send you a second app while you are waiting on your scores. While others will hold your app till the scores come in before they send you out a second.

wait did someone post before saying that the schools don't even look/consider LOR's until secondaries? as in they don't even have access to them? or they just don't even regard them.

They won't ask for them until secondaries. You shouldn't send them until asked, unless stated otherwise on their website (not likely).
 
I'm submitting AACOMAS next week and am retaking the MCAT because I will also be applying to allo schools. I have a decent MCAT score (26R) and was wondering if the places I apply to will put me on hold. My advisor said I must report that I am retaking to AACOMAS.

Thoughts/comments?
 
I dunno. I'm not on an adcom. If I had to guess, I would think it probably depends on the individual school. Some may and some may not.

Your current score isn't too bad. Schools may be interested enough, depending on your other qualifications, to grant you an interview, despite that you are retaking. Probably best to contact the admissions staff at the individual schools for a more definitive answer, though.
 
I'm not telling them I'm retaking (27R) and my advisor said thats fine. Obviously you'll need to update them when you do retake, but I think you can submit without indicating you're going to...just think of it as if you hadn't decided whether or not you would retake. I know I'm competitive at DO schools and don't want to risk being put on hold.

You do not have to report that you are retaking unless you want them to hold off on a decision until they get your new score. BTW, I got in with a 26O, nobody even asked me about it.
 
I have read many of the threads about DO schools. But I am not sure where I need to start? When and how does the application cycle begin? Are prerequisites similar to allopathic schools? If someone knowledgeable can give me a quick overview of what I need to do in order to apply and all, that would be great.

Also, I was planning to apply to the Carribean schools, and I am not going to ask whether they are better than DO programs, but I wanted to know specifically what set your minds on DO. I read the other thread about this, but I wanted to learn more than, "I met two great DO's".

I guess I am still in the stage of gauging if DO is right for me and if so, how I would go about conducting my application and all.

Also, just so that you guys can better advise me, I am a student with roughly a 3.5-3.4 overall GPA majoring in nonscience, but I will actually finish out my degree this year in chemistry. (I ditched Economics)😀

I had to repeat some prerequisite science classes (C's to B+'s) (allopathic requirements) and overall I have B+'s and A's. Am I a legit candidate for DO schools? I hate the cold so I would want to go to schools in warm states. Which would you recommend? I read about TUCOM and AZCOM, but are there any in FL or CA (except TUCOM)? I also have interests in surgery, pediatrics or emergency medicine. I know that "DO's specialize in virtually all fields of medicine", but is there more that needs to be considered? For instance, "ROSS/SGU preach the same thing, but we all know its not as easy as they may represent". Thanks in advance!

application cycle has already begun and it is possible to already have submitted the primary app. Instead of going through AMCAS you go through AACOMAS. http://www.aacom.org/Pages/default.aspx AMCAS or AACOMAS are very similar and ask the same questions in slightly different formats.

Pre-requisites are identical. Eveyr school requires the usual year of gen chem, ochem, physics, bio and others require additional courses like genetics, biochemistry, and english.

some schools require a letter from a DO but most just recommend. plenty of peole have been accepted w/o so it won't be that big of a deal if the rest of your app is strong.

Western U is in Pomona, CA and LECOM-B is in Bradenton, Florida and NSU-COM is in ft. lauderdale, Florida. There is also another school in arizona...ATSU-SOMA.

you will not see the same troubles you would from a caribbean as far as getting into residencies. not only do DOs have residencies specifically for them where only they can apply/attend, DOs are well received in the MD community. the only place you will see some negative bias is if applying to very competetive residencies like ortho, neurosurg, opth, derm, etc.

check out the AOA website www.osteopathic.org and/or start looking at websites for individual schools. if you type in "list of medical schools in the US" you will see every medical school available, DO and MD

in work experiences?
extracurriculars?

what about attending a leadership conference.. would that be under awards, or extracurriculars?

My concern is not reporting and getting a lower score than my original and thene have to report it. Seems a bit scary, doesn't it?
 
The reason why my advisor said I should is because if I get my application tossed and then show up with a new MCAT score without them knowing its coming, they're not gonna pick through the trash.

What was your breakdown? I can't imagine getting "tossed" for a 26 unless one section was way low.
 
whats the consensus on adding "dean's list" to the awards/honors section? is it kind of self-evident by looking at GPA if you were on the deans list or is it worth to plug in each separate time you made it?

Sounds like if you made it multiple times, only list it once, if at all. Some think it's useless to even mention it, since it may be considered a given, based on GPA.

I was advised by an admissions counselor to place hospital volunteer and shawdowing in extracurriculars (it shows you did it for experience rather than money) Paid experiences go under the work experience heading. A conference would be under extracurriculars as well. Hope this helps 🙂

An admissions counselor told me to put it in under "Awards". However, I was on it every semester while in school, and since you can only put in one year for an award, it was listed multiple times and overshadowed some of my other awards, so I skipped it. Also, your transcripts may indicate which semesters you were on the list. Hope this helps!!
 
OK, I can't figure this one out: where in AACOMAS do I put certifications and licensure? I'm certified (and recertified a few times) ACLS and PALS, NCCPA, and licensed as a PA in Oregon and SC. There's no obvious place to put any of these things but they're important. My ECs are getting rather crowded.
AAMC gives you a place to list certification and licensure, but not AACOMAS.
Also, I put my one publication in Awards but that seemed stupid and there was not enough room to list the whole citation.
Help!
