## 2008-2009 Application Season ## Post AACOMAS questions HERE!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It took my transcripts about 24 days to show up and I requested them the day AACOMAS opened. I don't know if it was the school or AACOMAS that took so long. Just relax, it is all you can do afterall!

Good Job Ryserr21!!
I was wondering if you took kaplan for MCAT and if it was helpful??? Did u significantly improved you score from practise exams or kinda around close to it???
Also any sugesstion for how to study for people who still have to take MCAT???
Thanks
Good Luck

so i just got my MCAT scores back today.....28R!! whoop whoop.

so here is my question. i have already submitted AACOMAS. do i send my MCAT to AACOMAS or do i send it to the schools I applied to since i already submitted for verification? either this is done through the THx system thing right?

What happened to the days when you could submit in early june and be verified like 5 days later. I remember seeing a lot of that like two years ago when I look up the verified thread. meh

I swear, I think its like just one guy who runs the whole shebang, and his wife does the recorded phone message. Whenever I called, (and the phone was actually answered) I always just got this one guy. Every time. Always sounded bored too.

I bet they will tell you that they are overwhelmed with "unusual" number of applications this year! They need to come out with a better line because AMCAS also receives an increase in application each year yet you still get verified in days. The price for primary applications are similar between both institutions so I don't know why AACOMAS can't hire more hands to speed up the process. AACOMAS represents what's wrong with AOA:slow. AOA will drag their feet to respond to students needs. Be it rising tuition costs, better rotation sites, stemming down for-profit schools etc. However, they sure respond with lightning speed when the media mixes MD with D.O.

I took my re-took my mcat june 13..should I wait till I get my scores which will be july 15..or submit my application. my accom is all filled out i am just sitting and waiting for my mcat scores to come in. what do u guys think?

So I have a few questions, my application is pretty much done except for the coursework, few EC stuff, and which final list of schools:

1) Right now I'm currently taking Microbiology over again but the class doesnt' finish until July 9th. Is it ok to list the original as repeat03 and list the In Progress semester as Repeat/To Be Completed?

2) Can I go back to edit my coursework once I've submitted, such as upon completion or when I enroll in more repeat classes?

3) If my original course is a 4 credit class, can a 3 credit class qualify as a repeat?

4) I'm definitely retaking Molecular Genetics, and Mechanisms of Evolution but I haven't signed up for classes yet since I've been having trouble finding 4 credit Evolution courses.

Can I list the original Molecular Genetics and Evolution as repeat 04 and repeat 05? This is VERY important for me since without doing this I will be automatically screened out of secondaries at many many schools severely limiting my list of schools!

5) What do you guys consider too many EC's? For example I have many separate events that I participated in. Some are walk-a-thons for charity events I participated once in recently, High school walk-a-thons, donations I made for shelters, many many separate cultural fairs/events I've been involved in. What about my hobbies like Bowling league, guitar lessons, etc.

Strange AMCAS has received all my transcripts already (3 of them) and AACOMAS only received one; they were submitted almost 3 weeks ago. Meanwhile i haven't even submitted my AMCAS application yet and i submitted AACOMAS a week ago. What's going on; this is crazy!😱

lmao--hilarious image! A.T. Still's great-great-grandson and his wife, bitterly reminiscing about the days when nobody went to D.O. school!

Yeah they are really slow, just make sure you keep an eye on your transcripts, they lost mine and I had to have them re-sent

1. I have been heavily involved in one organization for all of college, and I've had different positions each year (freshman year just a member, sophomore and junior years different leadership positions, and I have been elected to another leadership position for senior year but I haven't really started it yet). Since this has been my main activity, I want to include multiple entries for it, but is 3 or 4 too many (1 for each position)? Should I include a separate entry for the position I haven't even started yet? I'm not worried about running out of space since I don't do tons of different things, but is 4 entries for the same organization overkill??

2. I worked 2 entry-level jobs the summer after high school (waitress and HR clerk in hotel). Would you recommend including these (as 2 separate entries?) ?

3. I had an essay published in an undergraduate Classics journal freshman year. Too small/random to include?

Thanks!!!

1. i dont see the harm in listing them all separately. there is no limit to what how many you can have so if you have something unique to say about each position (for the description) then by all means separate them. you can even list your future position and describe what you will be doing in the fall.

2. as far as waitress and HR clerk, you can definitely separate the two since they are unrelated.

3. IMO you should let the adcoms decide if its too random or small... are you proud of your publication? was it a significant accopmlishment to you? not everything has to be about medicine. i'm not even sure what a Classics journal consists of, but is was your essay for a class? or is that like a hobby or something? either way, if you have an interest in it and you are good at it (which you are if you have been published) then i wouldnt hesitate to include it in your app

Sorry if this has already been posted.

Will AACOMAS hold my transcripts if they are sent/received before my application is finished? I am finishing up the last touches on my app but I have not submitted it yet. I was going to go ahead and send my transcript requests to my schools to get that started. Thanks for info

Yes! Send your transcripts ASAP!

Should I include work activities from high school in my application?

Almost done. But have a few questions. If anyone could help me out, that would be great.

1. I'm doing a PB. I have listed by future coursework on AACOMAS, but I do not have a transcript. I can't send them one, because I won't have one until I get there. Can I still submit? Do I have to wait for a transcript or will it just go through without one?

2. For scholarships that were received multiple times, do I list each one? That seems excessive. On AMCAS, there is a box to describe them, and I listed the additional years there. There is no box on AACOMAS. What's everyone else doing?

3. Will AACOMAS automatically list my ECs chronologically or do I have to do it myself?

4. Do things like Poster Presentations and conferences attended go under "extracurricular, volunteer, community service"? What if I was awarded a scholarship to attend a conference?

5. I've done several one time volunteer projects, and was planning on grouping them. These are things like helping out in soup kitchens, women's shelters, and packing surplus medical supplies overseas. I was planning on grouping them all together. Should I include or just scrap it since they did not require any long term commitment?

Thanks!!

Needed an attention grabber. Sorry for the mislead :hardy:

But I do have a few questions if anyone can answer them:

1.) How do you find out the AACOMAS calculated science/nonscience/overall GPA? I've looked on my application and do not see that 411 anywhere on my application. Does this mean it has not been verified yet?

2.) Speaking of verification, does the AACOMAS application explicitly say "verified" anywhere? All I see under my list of schools is a "submitted to AACOMAS" date and that was on May 5 2008. My transcripts were received on 5/12 but still the application says "Submitted to AACOMAS"

Just wondering if any one has any words of wisdom. I feel as though I have called the guy at AACOMAS way too many times and it takes a while for their response so I figured I'd ask you guys. Any info would help. Thanks a bunch!! 😀

1) You don't. This is available before submission, but goes away afterwards. It has nothing to do with verification.

2)NO!

You can email to see if your app has been sent to schools. Did you apply to LECOM/B? Did you get an email from them? This may be the only way to know without asking AACOMAS.

Also, you're probably verified, based on the fact that AACOMinfo says they're meeting their 3-6 wk mark for completion to verification.

Quick question.

When I was 18 I took a EMT course at the local comm. college. It was a community service class...and not really a college level course...accordingly, the course was numbered below 100 level (EMT 054).

Ok...as it was offered by the college...the course is numbered and it does appear on my transcripts. I hate to leave it off my aacomas app. as I don't want them to think I'm trying to hide anything...BUT...I got a C in the class...and I'm afraid that aacomas will figure it into my GPA (even though it is numbered below 100).

Do I need to include this course on my aacomas app...and if so, is there a way I can enter it without having it affect my overall gpa?

Any ideas?

I'm fine with the waiting game, I just want to know that they GOT there. To get an e-mail 3-5 days after the school sends them that says "hey, we have the transcript in our hands, now wait 2-4 weeks until you see it posted" -- that's cool with me.

They tell you to wait 2-4 weeks....what if they get lost in the mail....then you have to send them AGAIN and wait another 2-4 weeks to see if those ones arrive. You could be 8 weeks behind!

Also...listing repeated classes.

I find the classification to list a class as a repeat...BUT...I cant seem to figure out how to mark a class as 'LAST REPEAT' as there doesn't seem to be a choice and it seems that general repeat is the only option

any ideas?

1. You don't need a transcript for future work--it's physically impossible.

2. I just put the first time it was awarded.

3. I ordered them myself. I'm not sure what happens if you don't.

4. I put all presentations/publications under Awards, Honors, Scholarships. Do whatever looks cleaner. If you have no preference, then spread the love throughout the app.

5. I would list them, grouped together. Don't scrap em. You could give them a generic title under EC's and list the specific occurrences in the description.

Here is my situation and question for anyone that can help:

I am taking a couple classes from a local university this fall that one of my interviewing schools suggested. So of course, the classes won't be finished until December. My question is how does AACOMAS handle the transcript and application? Do they wait until December to get the transcript, so my app does not get verified or sent until then? Do I take that school off my app until later after it has been verified and do an update of my schools? I want my app to be verified and sent to all my schools as early as possible. I just don't want to wait around until after I finish this class and be behind in the game. I hope this makes sense what I am asking. Thanks for any information.

Has any ones primary application been processed yet? I submitted mine on 6/10/08 with both transcripts and MCATs received and It still hasn't been processed. I submitted my AMCAS primary on 6/14/08 and have already received 7 secondaries. I know that they say it can take up to 6 weeks but I feel that is more like the maximum amount of time. I just figured it would be by now since I sent it fairly early.

If anyone has links or copies of secondaries would they mind posting them? I will be on vacation from mid june-mid july and would love to get an early start before I leave.

Ditto.

First, send everything in now! Your application will be verified and go out to the schools with Fall classes listed as "in progress". AACOMAS will update the schools with your Fall grades when they receive your Fall transcripts (send them to AACOMAS ASAP when you get your final grades).

Good Luck! :luck:

Thanks prionsRbad. I will send them out ASAP!

Also good luck to you this coming fall.

Does a social gerontology class count as a behavioral science course?

Sounds like you may be talking about LECOM. Because of them I reworked my upcoming schedule 😉 Give them an email if that's who you're talking about and they'll let you know.

They are included but other DO schools want 6 hours too. That would be a major pain to have to take another class since I already graduated.

Would AACOMAS know the answer or should I call the schools directly?

ahhh they finally got mine and now i'm just waiting.......

good luck guys!

Oh I'm glad that I'm not in this alone! I've been freaking out about one last transcript getting to AACOMAS...AMCAS posted the same one about 2 weeks ago!! I was getting ready to go down to the school because I thought they messed up...apparently it's just AACOMAS being slow🙁

Geeze, I am still waiting on one transcript to "make it there" too, even though it was sent out from the school on May 19th! I called the school yesterday to verify the date it actually left their office. What a pain. I submitted my primary on May 16th. Still missing one transcript, which puts my app on hold to be verified, even though they probably have the transcript in hand (or lost on someone's desk).

My advice to you is to call them and see whats up. I called them this morning and they updated my transcript record which they received last week. So I'm complete now. From my phone conversation, i have a feeling it's a very small group of people running the show. The guy on the phone with me had to scold some girl to search for my transcript which apparently was buried in some pile.
