I am looking at the OHSU curriculum, and have a question:

What the difference between the clerkships Medicine, Family Medicine, and Primary Care? They sound similar to me....

Good question:

Clerkship = Third year rotations

Medicine = Internal Medicine (wards, inpatient, consult, and internal med specialties such as cardiology, gastroenterology, and endocrinology)

Family Medicine = Family Medicine (mostly outpatient (in clinic), some ob/gyn, some procedures)

Primary Care = Not exactly sure (anyone with any idea?). For next year anyway, there is no 'Primary Care' clerkship. There is, however, a rural clerkship.

Preceptorship = First and Second year clinical opportunities within the curriculum: one half-day a week on average. During your 'Primary Care' year, you either spend a year with a Family Medicine doc or an Internal Medicine doc. The other year you spend with three different specialists: a different one each term.

Let me know if I can explain it any better, or if you have any more questions!

I think it's cause you came out of nowhere - suddenly there's this big freaky owl face on the thread...haha, still laughing.

Haha as far as the avatar goes, b33sharp was correct in identifying it as the "O rly owl". If you do a google search on it, you'll see it's quite popular. As for the username, it comes from an old-ish videogame. I wish there was a more interesting backstory to it besides that, but oh well.

Still no news on the OHSU interview front. The fact that an invite could be delayed due to being in-state is reassuring though. Going to OHSU would be so convienent, since I live only about 20 minutes away from the school. I've heard so many nice things about the school as well. I guess we'll see what the future holds!

Thanks so much!

For the medicine clerkship, can you choose which internal med subspecialty to participate in? e.g. i am interested in oncology and would like to do that over some other subspecialty.

Is Preceptorship basically "shadowing" the doctor--following them wherever they go and observing their workday? Also, can you also comment on the Principles of Clinical Med (PCM) course (like what kind of stuff you learn...)? Thanks. 🙂 The more I research OHSU the more I like it.

Has anyone heard from the MD/MPH program yet?

Does anyone know when matriculating students have to take the drug test?

it's right around when you matriculate. so i would start studying about a month prior to that. say, early july?

does anyone know when OHSU stops interviewing?

I think interviews go into late March or early April.

Preceptorship varies depending on whom you are assigned to - both my my preceptors have allowed me to see patients independently, take histories, perform physical exams, scrub in on surgeries and occasionally retract/suture, and do simple procedures like tube and cath removals independently. Other people have had much more hands-off experiences. Either way, it is generally one afternoon per week, although some preceptors are willing to spend extra time with their students.

PCM is split into 2 parts. The first part is for non-clinical skills, and covers everything from sensitive patient issues (domestic violance, substance abuse, etc) to public health and epidemiology. The other part focuses on teaching clinical exam skills. PCM lasts from 1-5pm on Wednesdays for MS1s and 1-5 on Tuesdays for MSIIs.

Does anyone know when matriculating students have to take the drug test?

You have a month or so after the start of orientation. The deans will give you a time frame and warn you well in advance. They like to think of the drug test as an intelligence test...😉

Is it too late to receive a notice to interview? I hope not!!
I was complete on Oct 29th, got the completion email Dec 9th, and haven't yet heard about an interview....I'm feeling the fear of rejection....is there anyone in the same boat?

reezer,
I sent my app in very early November, and just received my completion on friday. i wouldn't stress. they had a very busy december because of all the unexpected snow/ice, and i'm sure this is the busiest time for them. we should be hearing soon, and they interview through the end of march.

Thanks radxbandit, I was in need of some reassurance... it's weird how everyone's dates are so mixed around in terms of application submission and completion emails...such is OHSU I guess. I have all my fingers crossed ;o) Good luck to you!

medicine = internal medicine (inpatient)

family= exactly what it says (this is primarily an outpatient rotation- you can do it at an OHSU or a community clinic)

primary care= rural family medicine/internal medicine/peds (outpatient, always outside of OHSU- you can put in a request for which specialty and location you would like to do the rotation in, and there are a few "underserved" sites in and around portland for those with families and unable to travel)

Hope that clears it up!

Anybody else going insane from waiting?
I turned in the secondary in early October, got an interview invite in late November, interviewed the first available day (the first week of December). On interview day, they told us 4-5 weeks wait time until we know our status (accept, reject or hold pool). It has been 7+ weeks now.

I understand that the winter storm is probably the cause for the delay, but at the same time it seems the people who interviewed the week before (the week of November 18) already heard back about a week and a half ago. I am assuming that they didn't do any interviews the week of November 25th (Thanksgiving week), I might be wrong on that.

Sorry for expressing a hint of frustration, I just wish they would be more transparent about their post-interview timeline.

7 weeks. Dang. I'm at a little over 3 weeks right now. My advisor contacted OHSU this week and they said they had only offered 35 acceptances so far which is "typical" at this point in the season 😱

Needless to say, they weren't joking around during the interview when they told us they do things a little differently admissions-wise. Congrats to everyone with an OHSU acceptance already, you guys rock 🙂

Have you interviewed yet? My application was complete 10/26 and I'm still waiting to hear back...

hola! i was complete 9/24 for the MD/MPH program and still haven't heard, and yes I'm going insane. When I called to ask about my status they said I was in the MPH screening and would hear "soon". I was wondering what constitutes "soon", a month or so? Also, I was wondering if I'm in the MPH screening, does that mean I passed the MD, or does it mean nothing at all??

Thanks!

Has anyone recieved an MD interview invite in the last two weeks? I'm trying to hold out hope...

During my interview, the MPH director explained it like this:

There are 3 ways you can get into OHSU:
1. be an Oregon resident
2. be an OOS resident but have great numbers
3. Combined Degree (residency doesn't matter)

So, if you don't make it into a combined degree program, and you don't have the numbers then you won't be considered for their MD only program. If you do have great stats, then you would be considered for both.

Hi - some hope for everyone. I am not sure what you consider high numbers but I got into the MD program at OHSU two weeks ago with a 31 O, 9V 10P 11B and I am out of state (CA). So don't give up, there are exceptions.

When I spoke with them in May, asking about how the combined degree admissions ran, I was told that if you did not get into the combined degree program that you were still in the running for the MD program. As far as "soon" is concerned, I received an e-mail two weeks ago (when I was at 15 weeks waiting) that said that it would be a "few weeks" until I heard anything...awesome!

I don't know how things work for the MD/MPH program, but for the MD/PhD program, each applicant is reviewed separately by the MD committee and the MD/PhD committee. If you aren't approved by the MD committee, the combined degree program can't accept you and you have no spot at all (although I do believe that combined degree applicants get a little boost to make up for the OR residency "points" they may be missing). On the other hand, if the combined degree program doesn't accept you, and the MD committee does, you have a spot as an MD-only. You need to be approved by both committees in order to get into the dual degree program.

thanks guys! gah this is an annoying process. its nice to have some feedback.

Hello everyone, I am new here, obviously a bit slow. I submitted 11/25 and received the complete notice 1/22, nice little wait. Was going to call Lori but thought I would give her til the 8 week mark and was rewarded! Like everyone else, praying for interviews.

Starface: There are three ways to gain experience in oncology: 1) request a preceptorship in oncology, 2) do an elective rotation third year and at least one sub-internship fourth year, 3) or just ask an oncologist if he/she would mind if you followed them around some. The descriptions already posted in response to your question regarding PCM are exactly how I would describe them too.

Medipost: I am really sorry you haven't heard back yet. I agree that the weather has definitely been a hindrance. But at the same time, OHSU is over two weeks late. I should think you'll be hearing within the next week. However, I should also think it's appropriate to call and ask. Either one sounds appropriate to me. I hope you hear soon, and I hope it's good news!

ballerina86: Regarding the MD/MPH Program, the way I understood that it worked last year is slightly different from what's been posted. First, you apply for the combined degree. Then 'they' decide whether or not they want to interview you. (I'm not sure who 'they' is exactly.) On interview day, you have your normal two interviews, and an interview with the MD/MPH director, and you meet with some of the MD/MPH students. The MD committee decides if they like you. If they do, awesome. You're in at the MD level. Then you go to the MPH Committee. If they like you too, you get accepted to the combined degree program. If not, you just get accepted to the MD program. If you don't get into the MD program, then you still go to the MPH committee. And they can fill six spots a year with MD/MPHers. If they decide to put you in one of those spots, then you get automatically accepted on the MD side anyway.

Interview invite!!! Wow, out of the blue! Soooo excited! Thats going to be a long flight from Florida! Does anyone who has interviewed previously have any advice on hotels, transport, and the interview day in general? 😀

If you get accepted by the MD side before the MPH side, will they let you know earlier? As in will they send you an acceptance for an MD and let you know that you're still being considered by the MPH people?

I don't think this is usually how it works. As you've probably noticed, OHSU's MD committee takes awhile to make decisions. As a general rule, the combined degree programs have fewer applicants and generally know who they want much earlier. This means that by the time the MD committee passes judgment, the combined degree program has already made up its mind on you and can jump in and send out their decision.

It is much more likely that the combined degree program will call you to "keep you informed". This is basically their way of telling you that they are interested in you, but that you haven't cleared the MD committee yet.

Thanks for the clarification urhere.

The buses are relatively easy to get around on. And the drivers are much nicer than the bus drivers in other cities. From PDX take the supermax into the city and bus line 8 goes up the hill to OHSU. To get to the admissions building you can get off the 8 at Plaid Pantry (it's a convienant store) and walk. Also for buses, it's easiest to get an all day pass if you're going to take more than 2 rides outside of fareless square (free fare zone downtown). I think they have student hosts you can stay with too.

boboca,

Thanks for all the Info! 🙂

Irish37,

I believe I was complete around 11/6, though I sent in the secondary around the end of Sept. Hope this helps! Thanks for the kind words, and good luck! 😀

ok...i interviewed before thanksgiving and still have not heard back yet.... i'm getting so frustrated with this school!

I think you could call and check if it's been that long.
Good luck!

Hi all,

I bet they are grouping decisions on the people who interviewed on the days right before Thanksgiving (Tuesday Nov. 25th & Wednesday 26th) with the people who interviewed during the week after like me (Tuesday December 2nd-Thursday December 4th).

Hopefully OHSU will release their decisions this week, as it has been about 2 weeks since the people who interviewed on Nov. 18 reported getting their responses on this thread.

Hang it there! I wish it didn't have to take this long.

I got a little impatient and started a c/o 2013 thread in allo! I know OHSU is a bit slow filling the class, but I want to meet my classmates NOW!! Best wishes and hope to see many of you in the fall! Now, go write on that thread so we can compete with these other schools that already have like 100 members!! 🙄

I'm not really sure how they group decisions, but I interviewed in the beginning of December and got an acceptance email 😀 a few days ago. Good luck to everyone who is waiting!

FYI for MD/MPH-ers vying for those 6 spaces...

I interviewed Dec 1 and just got an email that I'm on a post-interview hold. So, at least something is happening!

Best of luck to the rest of you :luck:

Hey, congratulations! How exciting! Hope to see you in August 🙂

so you guys said there are six spots...do you know how many applicants there are or how competitive it is?

During my interview they told me they'll interview 40 people for 6 spots in the program. I know there were at least 3 MPH-ers interviewing on my day in early Dec. But I don't know how far along they are in the 40

Emailed Lori Toner and stated how awesome OHSU was and that my year of volunteering there made me appreciate it, so if can you please interview me now?

She said i'll hear from them in a few weeks and the letter will be added to my file *sigh*

I interviewed at the end of December and I wish I'd just find out now! Getting impatient... 🙄
