hmm so 2 hrs after i left thte message, i got the secondary in my email box. I dont know if that was coincidence, or if they sent it after they got my message. Oh well, I have it now! 😀

Anyone else finding the prompt somewhat difficult to respond to? I'm just not really understanding what kind of insight they are trying to gain by asking you how you'd evaluate your own success as a student.

Me.
Probably gonna write something along the lines of what I expect of myself by the end of my time in med school.
Are you doing all "optional" essays?

Yeah, I'm probably going to fill out the optionals (might as well, right?). I do have stuff to write for the adversity and diversity prompts, as I have written similar responses to other schools.

It's pretty much that main prompt that has me boggled. I mean, what are they seriously looking for? My "success" as a medical student will be measured by how well-rounded and capable I am as a physician, no? I thought it was essentially a given, so I'm kind of wary of the prompt. Maybe I'm just overthinking it.

What are the optional essays?

Anyone hear anything recently? USPS notified me that my application was delivered three weeks ago, but I still have not recieved an email from OHSU. 🙁

same here. Not sure what's up, and they seem to want us not to call at all (based on the admissions pre-recorded voice message). when was your due date?

I submitted 8/18 and my deadline was 9/1...still no word, complete or otherwise.

I am still in automatic secondary essay hell with 10 schools to go and needed a little pick-me-up, and I woke up this morning to find OHSU secondary invite in my email inbox!

Super-happy!:soexcited:Portland is so groovy, OHSU campus is amazing, close to family etc.

Back to reality... another essay to write. And this one is certainly different.

AMCAS submitted: 7/30
AMCAS verified: 8/22
Secondary received: 9/24

Mine was due on the 10th or sometime around there. I got it in a week before that though. I tried calling them too, but that message made it clear that they don't want anyone asking about their application status.

They are super slow! Don't worry.

No worries yet...I wish I could tell them that I gaze out my window at OHSU every morning and dream of one day attending, but that might sound creepy?!

Hey I had a question for you guys...how long did your essay turn out to be? I've got about 3/4 of a page single spaced so far, but I feel like it should be at least a page...

... particularly creepy if you live nowhere near the campus 😛

Okay, I may be over-analyzing this essay prompt but its driving me crazy! I am beginning to think that its poorly worded on purpose.

I wrote a nice long essay about the skills I believe I should acquire that will determine my success as a medical student but now I feel that I've gone off-topic.

If you plug in the dictionary definitions of "evaluate" and "success" the prompt reads :

How will you determine the value of (a) favorable outcome(s) as a medical student?

Ack! Its not asking what you think determines whether you are successful as a medical student but rather what is your idea of success?

Clearly, it is not as simple as it looks. What do you guys think?

Now I am experiencing deja vu...:scared: maybe I should sit on this one a couple of days.

it's a "personal" question, so answer however you want.

i would say write about what you anticipate happening to be sucessful. ie if you plan to learn russian, and you learn russian, you're sucessful

complete today.

I was complete Sept 4...and have only heard the crickets chirping over in Oregon. Send me an email already!!!

My file was complete on the 22nd. I'm an out of state applicant from Arizona though so I don't have much hope. It is a dream school for me, I'm just not sure what they want from an out of state applicant.

finally complete, i submitted 8/23 and over a month- soooo slow, everyone keep waiting the completion email is coming

Have there been any interview invites (or rejections) since Berken?? Wasn't that a few weeks ago? So sad for the rest of us.

i had an invite about a week ago, and i was complete at the end of august.

I received an interview invite from OHSU today, and they hadn't even sent me a complete e-mail! It was totally unexpected. I'm stoked! So, I guess they don't always follow the complete e-mail and invite timeline? I'm not assuming mine was the only one, so hopefully some of you guys will also get surprises in your inbox! 😀

Oh, and if anyone is wondering, USPS said OHSU received my app on Aug 26th!

Looks like the next wave of interviews isn't for another 3 weeks

Ok I haven't figured out their system yet.

They send out invites every 3 weeks? or only for OOS? In-state had a wave yesterday, so 3 weeks for them...when was the last wave for OOS?

Just because invites often go out in waves does not mean they will only go out in waves. I'm sure they send them out as the committee chooses, which is probably not only once every three weeks.

i'm OOS and got invited today... but i live in west virginia and lived in ohio for a few years so i guess i have a bit of an advantage?

Did you live in Oregon as well? I'm a native Oregonian but a CA resident now, so applying as an OOSer.

...because you lived in Ohio?

You may want to double-check your invite before you book a plane ticket.

sorry, what? i definitely got an invite...

I think people are confused because we're not sure why being from Ohio or West Virginia helps you with a school in Oregon...

ahh ok sorry. i meant it was strange i got one since i am out of state.

I was trying to make a joke that you confused Ohio with Oregon. Hence you should double-check your invite to make sure that you're going to the correct state for an interview ...

Congrats on your invitation though :luck:

I haven't seen the specific wording for the optional essays on OHSU's secondary. could someone post those, please? Also, not sure if it's possible, but is there a way to attach a copy of the secondary pdf to the thread so we can download it?

I'm getting the impression that OHSU is interested in nontrads. I find it funny that I would most likely have been passed over had I applied 10 years ago instead of going to PA school but now that I'm 3000 miles away I get a secondary...huh.
My baby sis works up at OHSU as a researcher with a spine program and said she was talking with one of the med students and I should play up the whole "return to Oregon"/"worked in underserved/rural area" thing. I had already addressed both of these issues in my essays. I still have to write something for the "how will I measure success as a med student" essay...better get crackin'.
There's no place like home........
